Werdly this episode got me all emotional - it reminded me of all the tear-downs and honings my Dad and I used to do on shitty old engines that had been sitting around forever when he was still around. These days with nobody to help me I'm more a chuck the engine and get another one, but I miss those days with my Dad.

Thanks for the kind words and up-votes everyone! Yeah I still have all Dad's old books about Fangio, Moss etc too, he was a petrol head through and through. He would have loved all the great content on KZbin now. I do get my boys to help out with simple stuff like servicing, but I think by the time they are old enough to be really getting into it the automotive world will be so different.

Al mate, a little tip or for anyone for that matter I think you'd like, grab a paint scraper and grind it down (a 20-50mm wide one) even just a few licks on a linishing belt)) turn that into your razor blade and you're going to find getting the gasket smutch off a damn sight more workable than pinching the little .55mm blade take you half the time too!

Just started binging this series, loving it so far. I had a feeling this engine was gonna be a sludge pit. Had a friend ask me to help him swap the engine / trans from a wrecked '98 Honda Civic into his 380k and some odd miles old '98 Civic. He got a wrecked car with 68k miles on it, and holy crap the sludge seemed like it was going to come to life and attack us. The low mileage engines oil had been changed at regular mileage intervals but the time between the change intervals was so long that it made the low mileage engine have more sludge than his nearly 400k mile engine. That turned into a bit of a mess, but at least the 5 speed from the '98 low mileage car wasn't as toasted as his 380k mile 5 speed on it's probably 3rd clutch. My '79 Oldsmobile Delta 88 was the same way, engine was rebuilt around 2001, I bought the car in 2015 with less than 10k miles on the rebuilt engine, got it on the road and damn almighty the sludge in that engine. Plus Oldsmobile V8's force all the oil up to the valve train then it draaaains back down, so the smallest valve cover leak turns into a flood.

Great video, and absolutely nothing wrong with throwing a bit of free promo out to the guys that help you along. What goes around comes around. I never new the old VLs were such a tough motor, had a few as company fleet cars that we used to fly backwards and forwards Melbourne to Adelaide for work. The first car that driven reasonably would just do the 730km trip on one filled to the neck tank of fuel.

I used to use a razor blade for cleaning gasket surfaces, but I found that a wood chisel works better, I like a 3/4". I grind it to a perfect edge, then use some fine emery on a flat surface to dull it slightly and remove any burrs. Basically the goal is to give the edge a very small radius. The dull edge doesn't catch like a razor, but it rips old gasket material off. I think it's safer too because it's easier to control and can't break.

What's really funny is that the wheels that are on that car were used on Oldsmobile Cutlasses here and when you were lifting it on the hoist with the engine in the foreground and the car cover on it, I kept thinking why is he working on a Cutlass? You have to Google them sometime Al...they were so fugly and usually never came with a decent engine. It was either a 3.3L Buick V6, a 3.1L GM V6, a 2.8L GM V6, a 2.2L 4 cylinder, a 2.5L Iron Duke 4 cylinder, or the ever popular GM 2.4L Quad Four depending on which year you bought. I have owned a GM product with almost every one of those engines. I even had a 1976 Buick Skylark sedan that was given to me with 32,000 original miles on it with a 4.3L 260 ci V8 that was an absolute turd, but was one of the most reliable vehicles I had ever owned and had HOT air and COLD AC. Damn was it ugly as all hell though...reminded me alot of a stretched Nova.

Hi Alan, really enjoy the videos, just a small idea for you that might make life a little easier, I bought a surface prep tool when I was still in the trade, it uses 3M Roloc nylon brush heads (think they actually use them for sanding filler in bodyshops) but does an excellent job on flanges for removing sealer, carbon and such like.
