Skids fan for over 30 years...and I think the U2/GD cover was an excellent effort, right down to the Edge replicating Stuart Adamsons solo, note for note. Just remember why they recorded the cover. Skids, still the greatest band in the world....IMO. Roll on March for the final gigs !! AHOY ! AHOY !

I remember seeing this in 1978 and it blew me away ! The greatest band EVER (IMO) and the greatest tribute that The Edge played to Stuart Adamson (SKIDS guitarist, for those that don't know) was playing the guitar solo note-for-note against the original. Stunning song, whoever plays it. But The Skids, at their prime (even now) would blow away U2. Funny how life turns out.

Never seen the film but I was a kid in Scotland when this came out, totally agree with benchism this version is unbeatable. Scottish pipe band drumming has a lot to answer for and the "blink and you've missed it" guitar solo is great. Nice to note that the stadium rockers can't beat four teenage laddies frae Fife! :)

I like GD and U2's version too, I just find it interesting how context can change the entire meaning, this version is clearly about a troubled relationship with his father (the part about weather IMO here is cause said father gave some lame excuse that he couldn't see the son because it was raining...) while the other does fit Katrina's disaster perfectly while mantaining most of the original lyrics... music is awsome!

I thought jobson said it was about a soldier friend killed in northern Ireland ?
@AoifenicLir3 жыл бұрын
@@duncanbirss8923 Yeah, I've always gotten the 'father was a soldier KIA" vibe from this song. Never once thought it was about a poor father-son relationship. Not that that interpretation is invalid any, just never crossed my mind. Might be because I have a solid relationship with my da and he served in the military, so my own experiences shaped the way I interpreted the song.

Yes he did; back in December of 2001. I don't think he really knew, or felt, how much he actually meant to people. I'll never forget it; it was just a tiny article in the entertainment section of the local paper here in Vancouver; I felt like I'd been shot. Still get teary when I really think/talk about him. *sniffle* I like to think he's in a better place, making gorgeous music, and feeling euphoric for no longer having to deal with the things that made him so unhappy here. :-) I hope...
