I love it, Drifter is my favorite from Skiff, only missing the internal milling imo. Great one!!
@Dmag13133 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not a knife without flaws. It lacks internal milling, uses an underwhelming steel choice, and uses free-spinning (although very high quality) hardware. There's something about it, though, that makes it one of my favorite knives. Maybe it's the finishing, the perfect detent, or just my interactions with the Skiffs themselves, but if I could for some reason only keep my Skiff or my Holt it'd be the Drifter every time.

This is a knife that cannot be fully appreciated until it's in hand. The details add up to a truly "luxurious" knife experience. And the Skiffs are wonderful communicators and makers. Not to mention they make some of the best bearings on the market! I agree with everything you said here.

I love my drifter but tend to not carry it much because it is so nice. Undoubtedly worth the cost when comparing in hand to other knives of a similar price tag. Outside of the steel I really wouldn't change anything else to upgrade it. The lack of internal milling doesn't feel "heavy" as much as "solid" and "quality"

@Dmag13133 жыл бұрын
My Oz is definitely the more practical edc knife. Lighter, slimmer, better slicer, and a steel I (very slightly) prefer. The hand work and attention to detail on my Drifter, however, is clearly a step above anything on my Roosevelt and the Skiff fits my large-ish hands a bit better, although both are very comfortable. I think the action on the Skiff is smoother as well, although both have outstanding action and it’ll really come down to whether you prefer a hole or flipper for deployment. In the end I suppose I enjoy them about equally. A Roosevelt at table is a better value, but I’d get the Drifter way before I’d pay secondary market prices on the Oz.
@LaddGardner43 жыл бұрын
Agree with every point. The Drifter should come with a picture hanger on the clip side: Wall art, but not a great carry knife. A steel that'd need regular touch-ups (and that blade edge's subtle belly wouldn't be easy to stone without becoming a flat wharncliffe, instantly), and a design that wouldn't be fun to cut with on a flat surface (cutting board?), owing to that ladder-length flipper tab. A knife like a "trophy wife." Spyderco Drunken for similar blade-shape, fancy milling, lighter weight, with better carry-ability (fix the clip), much better steel, and half the price. Bonus: You can actually own one.

What is your best knife for the price?
@danielgrant92132 жыл бұрын
While I can absolutely see that easily $800 worth of effort went into this knife, it's also just not for me. First, I'm just not sure if I'm ready for an $800 knife at all (or if I'll ever be). I've got a lot of other, less expensive knives on my shopping list. Plus, that's just too heavy for me, plus, like Nick I hate the size of that flipper tab. I don't have any issue with CPM-154 at this price point though. And you know what? Deep down inside I don't think Nick does either. I know, your own opinions can't be wrong, but I bet I can make you disagree with yourself on this particular point... Observe: Obviously one of the amazing things about this knife is the mirror finish on the blade. Basically, either CPM-154 or XHP (ok XHP or RWL-34 probably, but how easy would it be to tell the difference between RWL and CPM154 really?) are the fanciest steels that you can mirror polish (or at least the fanciest steels a small shop can mirror polish even for an $800 knife). A major part of this knife's purpose in life is to be pretty. It's pocket jewelry. Functional pocket jewelry yes, but still jewelry. It's $800 and even if that doesn't give you pause, the waiting list is also a year long. I posit, there's nothing anyone is going to do with an $800 pocket knife that pretty that you have to get on a year long waiting list for where CPM 154 won't hold an edge for an epically long time. Now back to Nick actually secretly agreeing with me... You know the Pro Tech "Ultimate Gem"? The hand engraved Sprint with the MOP inlays and the the Vegas Forge Damascus blade? Nick, if you could do that over again would you get that knife with a Vanax blade instead of the Vegas Forge Damascus? Vanax is the "better" steel right? At least as tough, way better edge retention, better corrosion resistance. Vegas Forge Damascus is (as per their FAQ) pattern welded 440C and CPM 154.... I mean you can tell me I got that wrong. I'm only taking an educated guess based on the videos of yours that I've seen. But I'm pretty confident you would not actually make that change because its not that kind of knife, and neither is the (admittedly somewhat less expensive) Drifter there. Though I guess its also possible for you personally a non-polished blade made out of M390 might still bring you more joy even if I don't think it would fit the knife as well.
@christopherm9032 жыл бұрын
I DISAGREE WITH YOU ON 2 POINTS. 1. I have mirror polished CPM20CV with an old bench strop and 1 micron spray. It’s beautiful. Also, some people, including myself, carry and use expensive knives regularly. While I am no one special, I carry my Holt Morpheus and use it on a daily basis and that was 1200. I also daily carry and use My Koenig Arius and you know hard those two are to get! Ive done it when a CRK was an expensive knife, to me, in my knife buying hobby, carrying may Sebenzas, Umnuumzaans, and Mnandi. So yes, for some it is pocket Jewelry, for others good looking daily carry. I can’t take it with me, so I enjoy it while i have it. It took me to age 30 to fiqure it out, now at 50, I wish I would have known that a lot earlier. The secret? Buy a knife that you love with a great spa service offered by the maker and you’ll never look back!
@danielgrant92132 жыл бұрын
Wow I post something with some sweeping and ambitious claims and get humbled. Who'd have thought right? 2 questions though: 1, To start with I notice even with a budget that allows you to purchase stuff from Holt and Koenig the reason why you own a mirror polished 20CV blade is because you did it yourself. How much time and effort did it take you to put a mirror polish on 20CV? Was this quick and easy? Or did it take hours? Because my contention is not necessarily that its utterly impossible to mirror polish a high vanadium carbide steel, but that its not economical to do so even in an $800 knife (IE I'd expect it'd take so much time and effort they'd be selling the thing at a loss). I'd love to be wrong about that assumption btw because I'd rather have a mirror polished 20CV knife than be right on some random post I made under a knife review video. 2, I didn't say no one would daily carry an expensive (and hard to get) piece of pocket jewelry. I said they're unlikely use such a knife so hard that CPM 154 would not "hold an edge for a very long time". Which I guess is kind of arbitrary and also my opinion. Some people are pickier about their edges than me for sure. And "very long time" is arbitrary, and I suppose, defined by me. But seriously, when was the last time you were actually frustrated because of how often you had to sharpen a CPM 154 knife, and needed to go to 20CV because you were just sick of sharpening?

@kevola57393 жыл бұрын
Free spinning hardware and drilled through stop pins covered by a decorative washer are smart cost cutting measures. $800 plus is not a cost cutting price. Factor in lack of internal milling, mid-range blade steel, and the pocket pecker protuberance factor and I find myself hugging my Rat 1. Pretty things cost money that you will always have to justify, and justify, and justify. When you want to sell and no one thinks the price is that pretty, you land up throwing it in the skiff. See what I did there? I am sure that you will find a buyer who can’t wait a year to part with his money but that is a whole other discussion.

Taking into account and agreeing with your views on money, quality, machining, details, I wouldn't get this knife for aesthetic reasons. I just don't fancy it.
