The basic premise of this story is crazy. As if a comfortable upper middle class couple would let a criminal live in their house as a " guest " - disturbing their staff and behaving with overbearing rudeness to the wife ! It's just not credible...

...and the bored wife falls for the 'viĺlain'.
@justint86354 күн бұрын
It's not that far fetched. A gullible workaholic wanting to make a name for himself and make his mark in his field of psychotherapy. Both husband and wife are terribly bored in their own ways.

@@None-zc5vgof course she falls for the villain. She ends up being neglected by her husband constantly and he basically pushes her into his arms. The villain shows her more charm and more attention. Did you not watch this movie? It ain't rocket science.
@MirkaZemanova4 күн бұрын
@justint8635 And of course the film ends with HER death. The psychotherapist has solved his case, the criminal had free lodging and board for months AND a mistress. And now, redeemed by his psychotherapist friend, he has such a bond with him that he needs to go back to help him, hence he abandons the mistress - all the while neglected by her husband - the second time. How typical for the times! Very good acting, though. I enjoyed Bogarde's performance, against my expectations. And I loved Hugh Griffith's police inspector, inspecting the Miró print in the house suspiciously. :-)

Actually, fake plot! The sleeping Tiger was the Psych, knowing how to ditch his pretentious, greedy, boring wife without being obvious. Just ignore her and concentrate on work, and then invite a very handsome crook to live in a great house with her! So, he killed his wife and he gets all the sympathy. Dude should have been awarded the bachelor of the year award! No cop investigation, where usually the husband is suspect #1!! No alimony, no divorce settlement. Settle down with the maid. Thoroughly despicable characters in a ridiculous movie operating on an incredibly unbelievable premise. I'm about as liberal as it gets on many matters (and getting more so all the time) but the concept of the utterly deluded doctor taking in the criminal who holds him up, WITH COMPLETE FREEDOM TO DO WHATEVER HE LIKES and without thinking about or even consulting his wife (or, for that matter, considering the safety of his maid OR his dog) is so wrong-headed that I almost don't blame her for her loathsome, unfaithful actions. (Note I said ALMOST.) Then there's the ending, which is so shrill and melodramatic it makes silent movies look sophisticated and restrained. People inclined to be charitable may want to regard this as Dirk Bogarde's (who exudes utter creepiness more than almost any actor I know, even in Doctor in the House) and director Joseph Losey's (working here under a pseudonym, understandably) warmup for their dark 1963 collaboration with Harold Pinter, The Servant. I'd prefer to label it a predecessor to those "(Fill-in-the-blank) from Hell" movies (Fatal Attraction, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Pacific Heights, etc.) that were all the rage in the 1980s and 90s... except that, for all their flaws, ANY of them is vastly preferable to this thing! 1/10.

I wonder if this film was Joe Orton's inspiration for the later, much naughtier " Entertaining Mr. Sloane " ? Maybe, pre swinging 60s, the idea of a menage trois or voyeurisim could only be hinted at. The premise that the husband is as sexually interested in the young man as the wife makes the film believable. Anyway the husband comes across as creepy and manipulative. A typical shrink.
