As an American, I feel an even greater shame at my country’s complicity in war crimes. I think, though, that Biden-and likely Starmer-are basing their decisions on domestic politics. If they cut off weapons to Israel (which both international and domestic law clearly demand), then they fear their opponents on the right will tar and feather them over it. What in reality are the differences between the way the IDF is behaving in Lebanon and the behaviour of the IJA,IJN and SS in WWII? In addition what are the differences between the way Hezbollah(part of the Lebanese government)or Hamas behave and the way that the French resistance or Yugoslav,Greek and Soviet partisans behaved. For that matter there is little difference between what these groups faced with a powerful invasive force are doing and the way that the Native Americans behaved when faced by European colonists or the way the Irish or the Scots behaved when faced with an overwhelmingly strong English invasion army. My partner is a British Palestinian and every day since the beginning of this it has broken my heart to watch how crushed he is inside. Seeing him so helpless with family over there and in the west bank as well and not knowing if they are safe and well. I mean most of the US electorate wants a ceasefire and that's a robust sign for change, I wonder if there's been any of case of a convenient, timely negligence towards that, certainly I don't even think the US ought to be the single word on what Israel does but since they insist on embarking on 'world police' aims then there's an obligation, the fact that near zero has happened this far along is deplorable. We are on the precipice of further escalation with Iran which I will hand it to Israel they are adequately antagonized by, but how do I know that will be to an extent exceeding reasonable even with the US petitioning for restraint, and economic reasons to again not go overboard. I mean when the bombs dropped from Iran that day I felt the whole world was barely surprised but what happens when innocent Israeli's are knocked off? Again all it will lead to is a plea for de-escalation, including perhaps most prominently in Gaza. I suppose I credit Iran for incurring penalties on Israel for their violence, that said they need to be negotiated with and potentially nuetered too, hezbollah will only lockstep threaten Israel if they continue on as they have, it's more complicated than this I'm sure but jesus christ have some semblant respect for your populace and focus instead on securing your border with Gaza, pull back from the area and issue them autonomy, then discontinue settlements in areas that inflame tension elsewhere. Nobody is saying this isn't a horrid situation that at this stage no one group is entirely responsible for but the extent of the incursions and bombing has never worked.

I will always support democratic nations over authoritarian Islamist regimes. Isreal didn't start this latest war, Hamas did on October the 7th. Did Hamas consult the Palestinian people before going over the border to massacre civilians and start a war that will cost tens thousands of Palestinian lives? This was agreed between the UN, Isreal and Lebanon. Instead they have allowed Hezbollah to build up armaments and infrastructure near the border. They are not peace keepers, they are war enablers.
