Sega's Dreamcast was a short lived explosion of greatness. What it lacked in long term support, it made up for with a game library that went 0-60 basically from the moment it hit the market. It was difficult choosing, but here are my Top 10 Sega Dreamcast games.

Episode Notes:
1. All games on real hardware via RGB except Skies of Arcadia. I had to capture it via S-Video.
2. I almost made this a top 25 because there are so many other games I wanted to include. But it was already nearly 20 mins long.
3. Multiplayer played a major role in my DC picks because my best friend and I lived together during this time. We played the hell out of stuff like Confidential Mission and House of the Dead 2.
4. Other honorable mentions include: Virtual On OT, Street Fighter 3, Marvel vs Capcom, Vampire Chronicles, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Phantasy Star Online, Rez, Dead or Alive 2, and Powerstone 2.
5. Marvel vs Capcom 2 just edged out the first Marvel vs Capcom. I feel the 2 vs 2 formula is better, but appreciated other aspects of part 2 like the huge and varied character list.
6. Many of these games play MUCH better with a Total Control 3 Saturn to Dreamcast adapter. This thing is worth its weight in gold.
7. The ending to Soul Reaver was infuriating. It was even worse when the DC version of part 2 was cancelled.
8. The last few months of 2000 was truly a roller coaster ride as a DC fan. We got stuff like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II and Shenmue. It was the highest of highs. Then, only a short few months later, Sega pulled the plug on DC, bringing you to the lowest of lows.

Hey could do a video on Dreamcast games that haven't been ported or been remastered on other platforms? I'm thinking about getting a Dreamcast in future but I'd like to know what games are still exclusive to the platform as those are what I seek first if I'm buying a retro console I've never owned before.

Sega Lord X, I agree with you 100% when you stated that the "fighting genre" (my favorite genre btw) could easily dominate an entire top 10 list of DC games. With that said, do you think you can do a top 10 favorite DC FIGHTING games?? That would be so awesome.

Don't know if this is considered underrated anymore but the first Virtua Tennis is still to this day one of the best tennis games for gameplay. The graphics were amazing for '99 too! Perfect blend of arcade easiness and semi real physics.

Naclyn Erick II I don’t live in a mud hut so something being slightly bigger or smaller makes no difference - and I love the Dreamcast, I have four of them. But the reason I have four of them is because 3 of them broke. They’re not durable systems in the least - at least not the GD-Rom. The PS1 broke a lot, the original fat PS2 also broke a lot, the PS2 slim was durable and the XBOX and GameCube have been by far the most durable of the bunch.

It’s so good. I’m sad though... as much as I cherish it, I started a fresh playthrough with my wife so that she could experience it, she could not handle the grind and got too bored of the turn-based battles. We did our best, doing our own (sometimes silly) takes on the voice acting, taking turns playing, and I even would grind and level up after she went to bed so that when we played together we could breeze through fights... but sadly she never got invested in the characters or had the sense of wonder for the imaginative locations and scale of conflict. I’ve saved my childhood consoles with the hopes to share them with the next generation, but I fear the gameplay won’t hold up, especially RPGs seem to be fading because they’re too long form.

I quite liked the Anime cutscenes, and I was amazed at how much voice acting there was! I wondered during my playthrough if Ryudo would prefer the priestess or the demon, which would “actually” end up being the evil or heroic one, and if we would have to choose which to save. Awesome video! Skies of Arcadia is one of my two favorite RPG's ever (the other being Chrono Trigger). Every two years or so i play this game from start to finish, indeed because of the amazing story and very good written characters. Even graphically it still is amazing! Sega should really bring this to modern consoles, maybe only changing the random encounters with invisible enemies (make them visible or something like that). The only game i missed in this top ten is Crazy Taxi, i still consider this game as a contender for BEST-GAME-EVER ! And on my list i would've listed Rez, simply because that game rocked! The Dreamcast is, just like all Sega's consoles, absolutely fantastic! Some people have one console as their favorite, but i could never choose between the holy trinity from Sega. So i have the Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast on my number one spot in my console top 10!
@evshrug
@evshrug 3 жыл бұрын
LOVED Skies, only just now getting a chance to play Chrono Trigger for the first time (amazing music score, I’ve already listened through the soundtrack on a road trip). Crazy Taxi is a game I forgot I actually owned until I looked at my shelf just now. A very faithful arcade game with super smooth framerate, but for me the fun ran out after “a few quarters worth” of playtime. You can say I have bad taste, but I had more fun with couch multiplayer games like Rippin Riders, ReVolt, and San Francisco Rush 2047 - the latter of which had great arcade racing but also awesome stunt modes and battle modes! Some of my friends had Mario Kart, Golden Eye, and Super Smash Bros, but at my house we’d gang up and witness CRAAAAZY stunts with absurd high scores in Rush, Virtua Tennis Feuds, and played the crap out of my demo disc with PowerStone (because I wasn’t allowed to BUY fighting games, lol!). Championship Surfer was just a bad game, lol.

Sega Lord X • I wonder what could have saved them? As quirky as some of the games were, many were just solid quality instant classics. I’ve heard some say the DC and Sega failed because it was possible to download games and burn discs, but I don’t think that was the broader issue. There was that one creep in my school who bragged about “uncapping” his internet speeds and pirating movies; he probably knew how to pirate games too (aaand he had no friends). However, most everyone else didn’t have broadband or even CD burners yet. I think there was just too much emotion about the 32-Bit generation that already had Sega set up for failure. I liked my Genesis and the Sega arcade games were among other great ones, but only one kid at my school got a Saturn (different kid, rich, though he was also kind of a superiority jerk in his own way) and plenty of people never even knew Sega made a 32-bit system, while Nintendo and Sony built up massively loyal fan bases with lots of hope for the future. The first two years of PS2 might’ve been abysmal, but people were always thinking the next Final Fantasy VII was right around the corner (plus, for parents, the PS2 made a great DVD player).

The Dreamcast is possibly the hardest system for me to put together a top 10 for, mostly because moreso than any other console, my mood affects my choices, making it more fluid, as it has such distinct games. I don't know about order, but on average it probably contains: Blue Stinger Giga Wing Langrisser Millennium Capcom vs SNK Power Stone Guilty Gear X Border Down Bangai-O Crazy Taxi Tokyo Extreme Racer On another day, NFL 2K, Mars Matrix, Cosmic Smash, or Trigger Heart Excelica (or even something else) might jump in. It's just such a fun, memorable system to play. Even the "B-sides" like Armada, Industrial Spy, or Treasure Strike offer up a great time. I mean, I spent many a night with friends playing Fur Fighters, Toy Commander, and Chef's Luv Shack. Just too much awesome.

It even came out on Dreamcast's launch day (9.9.99) so how it never got any recognition is beyond me.

@@SegaLordX It was only recently that we reached the point where Sega has officially been out of the hardware business longer than it was in it. I remember seeing that depressing milestone in a Sega bits news post.

First off, I really like your videos. The info and the games you select to showcase are usually top notch. This video is no different. My Dreamcast experience was less than stellar. I bought one not too long after launch and really had nothing but trouble from it. The memory card died on me within the first week, not the battery (guy at store made me buy their replacement cells) and still lost hours of progress several times. A new card was the same for me. I ended up returning it within 3 weeks and stuck to the Playstation line. I was sorely disappointed with the system as a whole. Years later, I found a NIB system for stupid cheap and bought it. Strangely enough, the memory card still had data on it. What's really weird is that a few months ago, I pulled it out of the closet and the system still functions (CD drive appeared to work as well), then checked the memory card after a couple of years of being in a box with the rest of the system and the data is still there. I just wish the first one I bought had that kind of reliability.

I don't know why, but your summary of Shenmue's plot really got a good laugh out of me xD I absolutely love the Dreamcast, even though my collection for the system still has some growing to do. Due to my limited time spent with the console, I don't have enough to fill out a list, but currently Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Shenmue are definitely favorites, and I have my eyes on adding Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia to my collection

Good callout on Garou. I love that game Also Power Stone 2 is hands down the most fun party game I have ever played. It's like Mario Party with all the item and stage randomness but then with the added skill of actually fighting. Also the smaller bonus stages always brought insane chaos. 1 was like a tiny waiting room and the other was simply 3 steel beams that you balance on while you fought. Fun times

The Dreamcast must be my favorite console from Sega; I own two white and a black Sports edition, all boxed. Power Stone 1 and 2, Skies of Acadia, and Sonic 1 and 2 are my top games. The first time I hooked up the Nomi VGA box my retinas were fried upon exposure to Soul Calibur’s visuals. I’d love to a see a Dreamcast-mini, maybe? Awesome video, Lord Sega.

Good list. Skies of Arcadia is also my favorite Dreamcast game, although I prefer to play the Gamecube version, as the battles are much quicker and has some extra content as well. I am torn whether this or Final Fantasy 3 (6) is my favorite RPG of all time. On a side note, the Dreamcast is the only Sega console I ever owned, and I do not regret my day 1 purchase of the system. Not a big Sega fan, but I really enjoy your channel.
