Wicked little brew kit for day hikes, no use to me in the slightest but now i want one 😂
@Funkteon3 ай бұрын
These refillable canisters from 'CampingMoon' and 'Mountainhiker' and other Chinese sellers are pretty useless by virtue of the fact you will never be able to fill them to the same pressure levels as a commercially available canister. The best I've seen with one is someone used a brand new (and large-ish, therefore higher pressure for longer) isobutane canister to fill it using the correct adaptor, and all they could push into it was 30 grams of gas, which is barely enough for 2 quick boil-ups given the fact that once it gets down to 10 grams of gas, it barely has enough pressure to be usable in any place other than a completely windless indoor environment. These things are actually better suited for use with those mini gas lamps from Naturehike and Fire Maple, as you can get quite a few hours of use from them if you turn the flame down super low...
@AceadamUK3 ай бұрын
A top tip is too place the canister in the freezer (one you want to fill ) let it get cold for 15-20 mins and then fill it up. You will get more in. :)
@GarryCollins-ec8yo3 ай бұрын
My thought also.
@AndyWardpara3 ай бұрын
I wonder if since it was used and it ran out of gas, the canister was then cold enough to get a better fill 🤔 if you try it again Paul that's got to be worth a test?

You can warm up the donor can of butane a little too. it gets you a few more grams.

Freezer not a good idea, I left mine too long and some froze, and when I tried refilling it, it deformed the can, u know how it's concave on the bottom? Half isn't concave anymore 😮

i have the kraku, brilliant little stove. i used it for a 5 day bikepacking trip, zero issues! with these mini stoves you NEED a windshield to surround the stove flame, it will give pretty much 50% more efficiency! I use the lightweight one from Alpkit Also i bought a device called FlipFulel that allows you to transfer gas from 1 canister to the other with ease so no more half empty cannisters when out on trips! :) to refill the cannister correctly, you need to place the Receiving canister in freezer for 5 min, place sending cannister in the sun for 5min, difficult in UK but i found room temp is fine. now place the Receiving cannister on the BOTTOM and the sending cannister on the top, this will allow you to completely fill up the cannister, and as you shown, keep weighing the cannister until it is at full capacity, don't overfill for safety reasons! I also recommend not refilling the same cannister too many times as these were designed for single use, but ive used mine 3-4 times with no issues.
@GeekfromYorkshire3 ай бұрын
Ditto the 450g isobutane is 1.5x the cost of 100g so your fuel costs are 1/3rd and always start with a full canister for 5 day. However I ended going remote stove as by the time I factored the canister-top needing a canister stand it was barely more weight to go with a remote then I could use a windshield with less risk to the stove.
@richardsierakowski16233 ай бұрын
Great review of a tiny gas can. I have a Camping Moon TC-15 which may be even smaller at 15gms but it does need chilling in a freezer to max fill it. Ideal for a quick cup of coffee if you ever get stuck anywhere.
@Funkteon3 ай бұрын
Even the one in this video can only take 25-30 grams of gas if you're lucky. Once it gets down to 10 grams, it doesn't have the pressure to boil anything... You'll get two boils out of it at best...

I got the 35g one. I got 24 mins out of it on a jetboil stove with jet boil fuel indoors. Stuck canister in freezer overnight. This now means I can stick the jet boil pot stand and ithe lid closes properly which it never did with the standard 100g canister. I also got enough room for coffee sugar in the jet boil too. I also have the jet boil coffee filter. Did I mention the lid closes now. That was always my so annoying the lid not closing. Now it does. Happy days. Thanks for this little discovery

I have one because every can I have says do not refill. Also Butane is super cheap at $6 for 4 compared to $15 for 100g of JetBoil. As for dunking, Nice biscuits dunked twice with the Regimental timing of Dunk, 2,3 dunk. I like the screw on tripod. and put the can in the freezer for 15 minutes and you'll get more in.
@alexpervanoglu74203 ай бұрын
$15 for 100g. I live in Spain and buy 230g for 5€.
@browsman23283 ай бұрын
American Amazon sells this canister under the Camping Moon brand along with several other versions. Straight butane doesn’t work as well as isobutane in colder weather so keep that in mind.
@GeekfromYorkshire3 ай бұрын
Amazing fun to experiment! Kent Survival reviewed it recently so I checked it's specs, it's empty weight is 100g which (as you said) is roughly the same weight as an empty gas canister, it could take up 19g of Butane when weighed, BUT if you're doing this in anger you'd chuck the mini canister in the freezer before refilling it to get more gas in, and then obviously refilling it immediately as you did would probably get more in the 2nd time as it's been chilled from the emptying. For these small-fuel-volume contexts, alcohol seems the obvious choices as your fuel is less dense but your container is lighter, can be lower down for stability, can encase the flame with a windshield with less risk of danger to the fuel+burner....

I have the older version of the BRS stove and it is more wind resistant than the new one, the burner is very different on it, I use the BRS with a kettle that has a flux ring and it is a lot better than a normal pot, faster and more efficient. I just bought a Chinese version of the Jetboil and like it so much I use it in my flat because the pot is lighter than an empty electric kettle even when full, having arthritis in my hands makes these little adaptations from camping to home life such a big improvement in everyday life.

Great little novelty item Paul, many thanks for sharing. Could be good just to have in the car for an emergency cuppa if you get stuck anywhere. One bit of advice. Those tall gas canisters you are using to refill, are available from Decathlon in a Butane/Propane mix. £7.99 for 4 cans (It's what we use to fill our 230G canisters)

dunno about novelty, bring a small metal cup, small metal espresso maker and a guy can have a nice latte at 12,500 ft atop the world .. these are basically for heating 1 cup of water at a time for dehydrated meals, say you are hanging off the face of a mountain, white gas stoves that weigh nothing and are easy to set up can be the difference between a cold meal and a hot meal, and if its winter time its a big difference.. these aren't novelty by a stretch, for quick meals its a life saver, I bet you can get 3 meals a day for a week out of a full tank .. well maybe 4 or 5... lol

Clever. I watched yo,ur video about Hilleberg Unna and in general I agree with you. But it depends on how its used just like you say. I use it only on short trips but sometimes I go to northern lapland in sweden and those times I am mosty out for 2-3 weeks, then I need something much more sturdy. I migt have a Hilleberg black label and also a bigger tent, its just imposssible to trust weather for a longer time and you also need more gear in general for extended trips. I have a Hilleberg Saitaris, very heavy but also very reliable. My backpack have been over 35 kg but I make short daily walk, only 5-7 km then I make a basecamp when I find a nice spot.

All good. Good to have back up stove, a lantern and little stove to just heat up a brew. A cold wet walking day and a hot cup of coffee under a shelter is just the thing, maybe a soup packet. Nothing serious but very good. You still have options of gas to test out.

Did you remember to chill the receiving canister when filling it? That makes a big difference. I agree about the BRS stoves and wind but carry a 5 sheet windshield which almost surrounds it. Also using the FireMaple pan with built-in heat exchanger adds wind protection too. But the alpkit looks like an interesting alternative.

I use one of the ubiquitous grey pot and lid sets, with a silicone collapsible travel coffee mug, eBay stove in its box plus s2s plastic cutlery set. All packed in a homemade pouch. it weighs in roughly the same as my jetboil knockoff with cannister, steel mug and folding knife fork and spoon (like yours), but takes up less space. if I backpack I'll substitute a jetboil cannister, cheers Peter
