I'm sure you are thinking who is this madman giving me this book, but this is a complicated issue that doesn't fit neatly into a tweet so I hope you'll indulge me. If not no hard feelings. At this point along with Safrin they are the studio heads. Unless there are some complicated contracts with other people. Given that it was spread across two networks and so on. In the sort of way Kevin Smith was not able to make Dogma 2 for decades because Weinstein owned the movie. If they have all the rights and don't have to share anyone. The only one who could stop Gunn from giving it the greenlight. Would be Zaslav the CEO. I don't know what Gunns position on doing this animated show is. But if I had to guess, if you see his most recent interviews. The guy has been absolutely swamped having to write and direct a superman movie, write peacemaker season 2 and direct some episodes. Write creature commandos, and give notes on the animatics. Not to mention he has to oversee all the other projects that they wanted to get going first. In which he's been firm that he won't greenlight an idea just because it might sound cool. He has to hear a pitch, if he likes the pitch then have them go off and write scripts. Show him the overarching story or the show bible if the plan on doing multiple seasons. Where he will then will go back and forth until he feels like they got something that is worth making. At this moment I think his focus is 100% on getting the DCU first up and running, and at the same time making sure Reeves has the support he needs for his Batman universe. Knowing that the first DCU movies are probably not going to be automatically 1 billion dollar movies. Its why he's going for the 150 million dollar budget as opposed to the 250 million. He has to prove over time that they can deliver on a consistent basis so that when a new DCU project comes out. People will flock to it the same way Iron Man was a strong start, yet the true momentum started to really build among mainstream audiences after Avengers. I think a Smallville animated show does have a chance of becoming a reality as long as it makes economic sense. If they could find a way to have an artstyle that looks good but doesn't cost more than 1 million dollars for each episode. Giving them a 13-16 episode first season to see if there is a real interest in the show. But I don't think it will happen until Gunn feels more secure in his position and he's not spinning as many plates as he is currently spinning. Personally if I got to run DC for a day from a pure selfish position that might be a bad business idea but I want to see it as a fan. Instead of making it for HBO Max. I would try to shop it around and see if Amazon might be interested seeing as they have Batman Caped Crusader. And then since Young Justice has done so well on Netflix I would ask them if they would want to continue making the show since they are all in on animated content and need more in the pipeline.

Because his adventures took place in a more grounded and relatable World, it made his portrayal feel more 3 dimensional than the others. The writing was so good, that they made a Superman show work for 10 years without using his signature power of flight or his costume (one or 2 exceptions). I loved Smallville back in the day. I rewatched it recently. From seasons 1-5 it's a truly great show. The drop off during seasons 6-10 is massive. The last couple of seasons would be totally unwatchable if it wasn't for Welling and Durance's chemistry.

What they should have done is ended Smallville in 2005/2006, transitioned him into Superman and moved all the actors across to the film series instead of making Superman Returns.

Smallville was the OG live-action superhero show in my opinion, and technically the reason i really got into any other supes past Spiderman and the X-Men. I loved the Tom Welling cameo in the Crisis event in the Arrowverse, but am I the only one who kind of wanted Luthor to see THAT version of himself there, too?

And as for the question, my favorite live-action was Legends. I mean, I know it was campy for a lot of the run but you don't dance fight to the Thong Song and not be considered at the least a great moment.

Smallville was the series that introduced myself at the time I had just turned 8 to the character of Superman, his lore and the whole of DC lore. As well as for many others my age including adults. It was actually the show my dad and I would watch together. Smallville paid homage to many other Superman iterations such as the Reeve films/Lois and Clark by having the likes as you stated Chris Reeve guest star as Dr. Virgil Swann, but also Annette O'Tuule, Terence Stamp, Margot Kidder, Marc McClure, Helen Slater, and Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher. Smallville certainly brought foth the Arrowverse by having some of it's core heroes from it as characters in the show already such as Green Arrow, Supergirl, the Flash although they called him Impulse, as well as Martian Manhunter, The Legion of Superheroes and Justice Society of America. Arrowverse even homaged Smallville in certain crossovers such as Elseworlds, by using the Smallville Kent Farm set and playing the theme song "Save Me" by Remy Zero. Also that several actors from Smallville guest starred throughout those shows. Zack Snyder praised Smallville right around the time of starting Man of Steel for being the series to keep Superman alive and that if it wasn't for the show, his kids would have no idea who Superman is. He even used a few actors who had guest starred in Smallville such as Amy Adams, Allessandro Julliani and Mackenzie Gray. Which was also great way of homaging Smallville. Even Cameron Cuffe star of Sci-Fi's Krypton was a big fan of Smallville, said that the whole modern DC media owes something to Smallville. Superman and Lois has payed tribute multiple times through the use of plot, characters and story elements inspired directly from it. So many more people, both young and older are still discovering the series and becoming fans of it. As many have said via the Talkville podcast with Michael and Tom. The series I'd certainly say still has so much love and respect.

Christopher Reeves, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling were my favorite live action portrayals of Superman. I want to spotlight here Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Loved that show. That's the one that doesn't get as much attention or forgotten about. Along with Smallville, my two favorite Superman live action tv shows.

I watched "Smallville" back when it originally aired. I was eleven years old when it prepared. I think by season six, I started to feel that it should end soon, but I kept watching it since I already invested so much time into it. When I had Hulu a few years ago, and I was getting tired of the Arrowverse, I went back and watched some season six episodes, mainly because that's when the show's version of Green Arrow premiered. It was so refreshing to see. I ended up buying the bluray set last month, and even though I have only watched two episodes from season nine, I want to hold on to it. It goes well with my "Gotham" bluray set, and I'd rather have them than every season of every Arrowverse show. I may buy "Superman and Lois" in the future. I cried so many times to some of those episodes.

Gotham goes to my favorite Live Action DC adaptation, hands down. That continuity has my favorite live action iterations of Riddler and Penguin outside of the Jim Carry's Riddler in Batman Forever. I SO wanted an actual Batman show set in the Gotham continuity. I heavily suggested recasting adult Bruce and Selina (The only two acting choices I didn't really like for Gotham) but everything else was pretty great. I don't understand WB's hesitation for more exposure for Batman and Superman in giving them their own live action TV shows. You'd think that'd encourage fans to go see their respective movies MORE, not less. Despite what they might think, not all DC comics fans are 5 years old. Most of us are educated enough to distinguish between varying continuities.

Many fans believed that Smallville “jumped the shark” at some point in Season 7, if not earlier. Worse yet, the Season 7 Finale would be Michael Rosenbaum’s final appearance until the Series Finale in Season 10. Lex Luthor was a pillar of the series, and he was gone, with the character Tess Mercer filling in for him, which changed the feel of the rest of the series. Like many fans, I believed that it took a ridiculous amount of time for Clark to fully become Superman.

Generation change happens in corporations too. The new people desperately want to prove that they are better than the old people, especially when it is crystal clear to everyone that they're not even close. The worse the new people are, the more they want to prove how much better they are than the actually talented old people. In corporations, shit floats to the top, sadly, which is why time rots them all out.

It is a shame when Superman gets brought up irl with my friends I always have to glaze him cause they like to compete fodder like homelander or omniman. They compare people to Superman based on super strength, flying and definitely if u ad in laser eyes. But it’s crazy to me when they compare these characters to Superman it always seems to me they think it’s Superman with actual character. And that’s where I’m just like I gotta blame dc for not portraying him correctly on screen really. I havnt seen smallville but I liked Henry cavil but they wanted to do a super Jesus Superman and it’s just not it. What is wrong with society when the main Superman we get is a evil one

I assume the noticeable downgrade in budget and marketing for Smallville after season 7 is because the show creators/showrunners Al Gough Miles Millar left the show. Doesn’t help that Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk also left and they were the main characters right after Tom Welling as the star. Though Kristin leaving was probably for the best storywise since it allowed Erica Durance as Lois to be built up as the love interest.

Michael Rosenbaum is actually longtime friends with James Gunn so the Smallville animated project can happen but I assume right now higher ups at WBD like Zaslav wants Gunn to focus on the DCU first and actually get a good reputation for DC before green lighting any Elseworlds projects. Matt Reeves’ The Batman continues because it came before the DCU and proved to be a success along with Penguin so there’s faith in that brand. As for Superman & Lois, the show is too expensive for Nexstar’s liking so that’s the main reason it got canned along with the rest of the CW catalog since Nexstar wants cheaper programming. S&L could continue elsewhere we also don’t the legalities since it’s originally a CW show so Nexstar and Paramount may have some rights to it so they’d have to be paid if WB decides to continue it on their own.

The misconception I always here from people is that smallville was a Superman series when in reality it wasn’t it was a superboy series cause the creators stated in the Superman documentary Look, up in the sky! The amazing story of Superman from 2006 that was basically promotion for Superman returns that’s why it ends with Superman return the current Superman project at the time that they based the series off of the 1949 run of superboy comics which was before dc spun superboy off into his own character and the whole calling him the blur instead of superboy was probably a decision made due to the fact dc/Warner was already in the process of suing someone over the usage of the Superboy name when the show premiered so they probably didn’t want that to happen to them so superboy became the blur and I’m a Superman fan from childhood pre smallville the prospect of a new show was something but seeing basically be a typical wb/cw teen soap opera type show it turned me off and had me running back to the last actual Superman series Lois and Clark the new adventures of Superman that i actually site as to how u do a modern superhero show on television cause it balanced the more serious moments with the action moments so well it just to bad it only got 4 seasons on abc and was my Sunday night show and I have te physical releases of all 4 seasons

I love Smallville. Are there some things wrong with the series? Yes! no show or movie is perfect. For the most part I enjoy Smallville. Wb has a habit, since Arrow not letting shows, use certain characters bc they were supposed to be in an upcoming movie. Wb was being petty and childish, bc they didn't want ppl to love the version, from the series more than the movie version. Sonny has done the same thing with Cobra Kai. Sony want another karate kid movie, but don't want to compete with Netflix's Cobra Kai.

For years people looked down on Smallville and just saw it as the precursor to the Arrowverse. But now that Berlanti’s DC shows are over, Smallville was clearly better than all of those. It gave us the ultimate superhero origin story over 10 years. Other shows lost their stream and ran out of ideas after a couple seasons, but Smallville always had a clear endgame that allowed it to stay on track and develop the characters into their prime versions. Smallville was even more popular than the high budget theatrical film Superman Returns which angered fans for not using Smallville’s actors

I think you are forgetting the context with which people saw Smallville back in that time you're speaking of. Smallville ended in 2011, Arrow started the next year in 2012 and blew away everything that Smallville was doing in terms of both production quality and storytelling. Arrow S2 was even better than the first one in every regard. Then the year after that, The Flash S1 came out and it was widely considered to be the best piece of superhero media at the time, it also worked as a proof of concept that VFX heavy superhero media can work now, even on a CW TV budget. I think you're forgetting that 3 years of that high made people forget about Smallville but what people really shouldn't forget is that Smallville managed to keep its production quality and storytelling quality relatively consistent throughout its entire run, while the Arrowverse fell off really hard after the first 5-6 years. But it's also not really fair to compare these two because you also have to remember Smallville was only competing with itself, and the Arrowverse had to contend with a changing TV landscape as Network TV itself was becoming more and more obsolete competing with streaming services, and that also caused a consistent loss of viewership even in the good seasons, which resulted in budget cuts and so on. And I also feel like it's also disingenuous to say that Smallville gave us the ultimate superhero origin story, as I feel the show clearly peaked at S5 and was just tumbling around after that, and there were also a couple of dud seasons in between (personally I felt that S4 was also a dud but that's just me I guess), It became much more of an alternate Superman story than a Superman origin story, and it had the benefit of not being in the time where comic book fans on social media are rampant, and would've disowned this show if it came out today and because of that the ratings would have plummeted.

The way I look at Smallville is this, when it's great, it's awesome. But when it sucks, it's so bottom of the barrel, I wonder why I'm watching it *cough Season 4 cough*. Know what I mean? The show straight up doesn't get enough credit. Because when you sit back and think about it, Smallville essentially created the ArrowVerse which carried DC when their films was just, lacking is the best way to put it lol. I wanna read the Smallville Season 11 comics they got out there. Problem is finding them out there, and I'm honestly in the minority when I say Season 7 is my favorite season. I loved seeing Lex finally become a villain, seeing who he's gonna be in the future. I'd love to see the animated revival if it ever gets going lol. Like, idk what it is with WB and how they treat the character of Superman in general. So, it's like, with Smallville, idk. And what sucks as a sidenote, what bums me out with Superman and Lois, even James Gunn said he expected it to go for a few more seasons. So, that show getting cancelled, I don't think he had anything to do with it contrary to what a very certain fandom would love to believe. But I do agree with you, he said he thought it'd go on for a few more seasons, and he says he's committed to telling Elseworld's stories, but then he doesn't really try to help the show. So, that's weird. But I do find it weird how after he said he thinks it'd go on for a few more seasons, like, a couple weeks later it's revealed it was cancelled. That's why I don't think he had anything to do with the show ending. So, like, idk. My thinking is that with show not really being under DC but the WB and CW umbrella basically, Gunn had no say in what happened with it. I think of it like or similar to Joker 2. Gunn gave some notes, but otherwise, he had no say and that wasn't developed by DC Studios. I think there may have been a similar situation with Superman and Lois. Idk. That's just me speculating lol.

They've probably lost some along the way of who WB used to be. Like another film company that has decided to alter a well-known hero into a brand for them and take away that heroes origins and effectively rewrite a universe history of Spiderman. Similarly, the same has in WB with Superman and Lois. Smallville to series was great and set like good backstories to Clark Kent as a teenager and his development in both character and his heroic rise and alongside other leading characters in Clark Kent stories that gives us him to become Superman eventually. I was just wondering what about the two men behind the Superman stories and Stan Lee. I wonder what their views would be to how a corporation's of film and TV have tried to alter their characters out of all recognition. What would they say to them now? Smallville has the potential to work again in animation, and this could lead to further Superman animated series, and yes, there is one all ready but a new series based around Smallville and The Kents' origins set in the old west the origins of the first Kent to settle in Smallville and possibly Luthor family to. I have seen several things on the development of a story about the Kents involving time travel from Superman and an Elseworld sort of stories in animation. Arrowverse WB Smallville and Robot Chicken crossover.

I LOVE Superman, but Smallville has a couple red flags for me. Growing up, I read a few comics, watched about every superhero animated show there was, but I never watched Smallville. You know who did? My younger sister! Never read a comic book in her life, but she liked Smallville so much that she got about four or five seasons of it on the box set DVD. So, that's red flag number 1. That automatically tells me it's more after school teen drama than superhero show like Superman and Lois. It's a show that took WAY too long to end. You know what was one of the best things to happen to Gotham? Ending at season 5. And not because it sucked. I rather liked most of it. Smallville is the poster child for business ruining art. A show about the "hero before the hero" is honestly a 3 season show, 4 if you stretch some things out MAX! There is a problem with a show that introduces the hero's entire rogues gallery, and in Smallville's case assembles the JL all before the main character ever really becomes the hero. Red flag 2. I mean, once it's all over and we're watching the finale, only THEN does the hero suit up for the first time?! But, you've fought your entire rogues gallery and already formed the super team! Why bother?! A show of this theme can only go so long before you're forced to start introducing too many characters. And if I'm being honest, it's hard to watch a show with the same level of horrendous special effects and CGI that Power Rangers had at the time. Sorry to disrespect. Not saying there aren't redeemable qualities about it, but business (like the no tights, no flights rule) ruined art.

Yeah, I don't understand the execs at WB. But then, all of Hollywood right now has a proven track record of not having the first clue about aspirational heroes. I remember a few years ago, in an interview about Star Wars, Kathleen Kennedy made a comment that the original trilogy of films came out during a time of innoence that just doesn't exist today, and once I heard that, it became super clear why not just Star Wars, but the DCEU, went the way it did. Snyder didn't get aspirational heroes, either. Say what you want about Bryan Singer, but even he had a better grasp on what Superman could be than anyone at WB/DC over the past twenty years, and even his take was tinged with cynicsm and downers. They just. don't. get it and have concluded that everything characters like Superman stands for is passé. Briefly in their defense, though, you have to ask whether or not these things make money for WB or not. When the Arrowverse imploded, there was a lot of sudden talk about how the endeavor had actually never been profitable for them (and yet...they continued in spite of that??...for a LONG time!). At the end of the day, it's almost certainly about money, and they don't know if the audience is actually there for something like an animated Smallville reunion. They may just be waiting to see how Gunn's movie goes and if the appetite for Superman as a character is still there.
