As a former commercial CNC machinist and CNC prop maker for signage and "Hollywood North", when I moved off-grid to Belize, I started into hand carving old world utensils, namely spoons. I have been asked over the past three years to do all sorts of unique carvings that I am really not aligned to do other than straight geometric designs, but with my experiences in doing almost everything with CNC machines, I thought the now-accessible personal CNC option a clear path... With so many moving here from the sates and Canada as well as Europe, there are many home building endeavours going on. I also know some luthiers and decor chain store managers that have asked if my "woodworking" will be available for them to decorate, tool up and beautify there space(s). I am up to this, and elated my past aligns so well for it. I think the discounts and friendliness of the farmers markets here have established me as a name for quality and astonishment, so this is the next phase to wow the real business and fulfill corporate and wholesale requests. I basically did your "long game" already! It was painstaking, but a great learning opportunity, and I have great folks to thank for the moral support through the pandemic that we weathered well through with unique wood creations.

It is rare to fine such qualities these day even with people in our age group. I am the same way, truly like to give extra value. Many don't bother with small jobs - they discount any importance of it. I once custom made some thresholds. Was a small job that I had no interest in but did it because I was asked. About a year latter they had me build them a $30,000 custom kitchen. They told me that the only reason why they considered me was because they saw the care and attention that I had put into the thresholds. Since then over the years I have done about $75,000 in other work. All because of a small uneventful job.
@IDCWoodcraft3 жыл бұрын
This is the best awareness you can have. It's the same with me. I can sell $300 of router bits in one order. That's a larger order. And I write a thank you card. When I get an order for a $7 collet, I do the same. It's not the dollar value that makes the return attention important. It's caring enough about the person on the otherside to realize the porder was a need they wanted fulfilled. $7 or $300...there is still a person on the other side.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m looking to get into cnc to add to what I’m already doing. It’s not full time just a side thing thing right now but would like to grow into something bigger. Give you a little background, me and my son make cutting boards. I know sounds simple but it’s a long process. I own a sawmill and we take it from log to wood to cutting boards. It’s a lengthy process. I want to be different I could just sell slabs of wood but I want to take my wood from tree to my own piece of art to offer to a customer. The cutting boards sell pretty good but now people want their boards personalized(example) things like, mom’s kitchen or their last name engraved and so on. That’s where I think the cnc would come in for me. So anyway sorry to be so lengthy on story just wanted to share so you have a understanding and you know I’m very interested in learning your craft. Looking at purchasing the long mill 30x30 to use for this. Be glad to share pictures to show some things and ideas I have thank you for you time!!!

You're right a cnc would absolutely change your game and a longmill would be a great choice! It's been a really great machine for me! If you do choose the longmill, I was wondering if you could do me a favor, if you can use my link when you buy yours. It gives me a little pocket change. Thanks! Hi Buffit. I teach people in the CNC industry about business. The most common reason struggles happen is because the strategy has not been put into place. Great video! Thinking about getting into the CNC game. Mostly because I think the stuff you can make is cool. I'm retired and always being asked by the wife and daughters, Dad can you make that, I say Probably. Anyhow. I have a grandson that is some what of a entrepreneur. I thought about getting a smaller CNC and seeing if he would like to learn with me and if I find I like it, then I would by a bigger one and give him the smaller. If I try it and don't like it, then I'd give him the smaller one. I guess he makes out either way. Anyhow, so far I'm liking your info and presentation. Thanks.

Hi Jeff. Sounds like you have a plan. CNc is a lot of fun. I rarely turn down the challenges when someone says "Can you make that for me?" I think he'll like the gift more than you know

Thank you sooo very much for all the great information. My only real question materials cost aside....how do you determine what to charge for projects?? I am just getting started and am not sure how to determine the value of the work? Do you have a suggested formula? Thanks in advance!

@@IDCWoodcraft I’m looking to get into the boating and marine products here in Jacksonville Florida. Had a plastics company in Las Vegas 17 years ago. I found a niche starting out in the beauty business making nail polish wall racks. Moved to Florida worked for several companies programming and running there CNC equipment. I’ve kept in close contact with distributors over the years and developed new relationships here . Purchased a small shapeoko xxl and found out quickly it was too small for the route I wanted to take. Placed an order with AVID two weeks ago for a 5X10 CNC, pretty excited about that right now. With retirement just months away, I will retire to my 1000sqft shop in my back yard and make things happen. Your videos on niches is so important and developing those relationships are key for any Business just starting out. Also the ramp up time you mentioned, whew. If somebody doesn’t know anything about CNC work is incredible. The first machine I had was a 5X12 and between the software to run it and learning to hack out some cad drawings, almost made me want to return the machine and just forget it. It took me almost 6 months to get comfortable using the CNC so yes your videos are spot on. The area I’m lacking in is this new marketing angle. Used to you’d buy a yellow page add, make up some fliers and business cards and start meeting people and doing some work. It don’t run like that these days. Aww, I’ve babbled on long enough, thanks for putting your videos out. Keep it up. Ever need something done here in Florida look me up. Jerry55fl@gmail.com
