Unfortunately, if that irca has been raised in captivity, he or she would die in the wild, not thrive. It is important to know the whole story. We dont know if the irca was maybe rescued as a baby or has a deformity that would affect its life in the wild. Let hope that was the case and it was stolen from its pod because that would be awful. That is what seaworld was doing back in the day, apparently, which is so wrong. But I think we can all agree that the owner was a very poor choice of words. Nobody should own any living being.
@alshee3567 ай бұрын
@savvylinn I wouldn't doubt that many years ago they may had been captured. But now days all captive animals are either rescues or offspring from other captives. You could argue against captive breeding of non endangered species.but there are many many things to consider when looking into the ethics of it. America is also a little behind other western countries in animal welfare legislations but most captive facilities still do great work.

@dandyvods7 ай бұрын
@@alshee356 This is not true. While wild captures may have died down in the US/western countries, out in ASIA and russia they still occur. China has been having a boom in construction of sea parks much like Seaworld, and they have been purchasing Orcas from Russia's recent wild captures. The capturing of orcas and cetaceans was halted in 2019 after 97 Belugas and orca whales were found in holding tanks. Those animals were then traded to china. There are about 15 captive orcas across China right now and despite protests, the government continues to open parks like this. I'm assuming the orca in this video is from one of those chinese parks. Also @savvylinn - very rarely have orcas that were rescued been caught and kept in captivity. If I remember correctly the only known instance of this was Morgan because she was found to be (partially?) deaf. Otherwise, all orcas are typically either wild caught or captive bred. Most if not all in asian countries as of right now are wild caught.

It was heartbreaking, I'd swear you could see the heartbreak in the mothers eyes and hear the emotionally distressed crys in her calling. It's truly sad and ignorant what humans will do just to earn a buck. 😪
@RedVultureMedia5 ай бұрын
Reminder: Some animals are in captivity because they can't or won't survive in the wild. Also zoos and sanctuaries exist to help spread awareness about how we as humans can help save species from extinction. Breeding programs at zoos help to increase the population of critically endangered species. Take the ABQ Biopark for example, we have a breeding pair in a conservation program for Mexican Grey Wolves and have contributed over 30 wild individuals that have increased the population by 13.2%. That may not seem significant but it is very significant. So before you activists go saying that zoos are evil, think about the conservation efforts they strive for.

This beautiful, intelligent creature should be released back to the wild or sent to an open water sanctuary. Start from ourselves Stop going to aquariums to stop the captivity ❤
@Aperture__Laboratories7 ай бұрын
alright so based on your logic, we should stop giving money for the zoo and let the animals die from starvation? i dont see your point here, do you think they will let the animals go at some point? the aquariums would rather send their animals into a rescue shelter, because these type of animals was raised in captivity and will die instantly if you let them out, so, what do you choose? let them die in the wild after giving it freedom? or let them live longer and then them dying due to old age?

knowing why this orca is eating ice cubes in the first place makes the whole situation so much sadder. It should be a crime to not only hold an intelligent being captive but also just having them so far from their natural habitat that they have to eat ice for temperature regulation.

I think that it’s wonderful for people to be able to see wild animals at zoos or aquariums because most people would never see them otherwise. BUT the environment has to match the animal. For example the orca. People need to find a way that the orcas can be free in the wild, but can get close enough to humans to see them sometimes. Like making the area of the park that’s for the orcas be open to the ocean instead of them being stuck in a pool for their whole lives. Trainers can teach the orcas to swim from the ocean into the water park area to get snacks and play. Then whenever the orcas are done they can just swim back into the ocean. Animals should not be separated from family. If the animal shows any kind of distress or anxiety or shows a decline in health, they need to be taken back to the wild.

Or people can just pay to see them in the wild like safaris. Get on a boat and go watch them that way. But I like your idea too

There is a Dolphin & porpoise sanctuary in Palau (Micronesia) that fits your description. All of the animals are rescued from fishing nets, injury or retired from marine parks. There are about 6 "pools" in the Lagoon. They built docks & walkways for the humans, but they float. So the animals can swim under and even go out to the open sea. They tend to stay in the Lagoon. They have been trained to clean leaves out of the water (so they don't accidentally eat them which can be deadly). They respond to a few hand signals & will choose to interact with humans. I got to swim with them. The owner built the sanctuary after reading how human/dolphin interactions could be healing for people with a wide range of health issues. That's why my SO took me there. I loved the fact that the animals could leave any time they wanted to. The only time the large lagoon is ever closed off is during a typhoon or tropical cyclone. Most of the animals have small geo-tag implants so they can make sure they are accounted for and safe. The Lagoon that is home to Dolphins Pacific is huge. There should be something similar for Orcas. Release them all from captivity (including Shamu!) and let them live out the rest of their days in a large lagoon off the coast of British Columbia or Iceland or Norway. Someplace where they can be protected & kept safe from harm but let them live where they belong... in the ocean. 💙

Occasionally an animal might not be able to be released into the wild if they are injured or can't fend for themselves. I have never seen that with an Orca. But if that was the case, they should at least be kept in a natural environment like a large ocean pen. This concrete cage is so sad!

I don’t think anyone here understands that by owner he probably means caretaker at a rehabilitation center or something like that. Most animals at zoos/rehabilitation centers are there because they couldn’t survive in the wild, such as this Orca or the Bald Eagle. And If I’m correct most sea lions (at least in the good zoos that actually care for the animals) are there because of a heath condition. And back to the good zoos part, there is more to what you see. They have play times with the caretakers and enrichment activities, most of the time the daily shows they put on try their best to imitate what they do in the wild. Don’t get me wrong there are bad zoos and stuff like that out there but there are some really good ones out there that have the animals heath in mind. And looking at this center here it appears to be located by the ocean so the orca likely has more space then what is seen
