Hey legends - I've been mixing calisthenics and weights for a few years now, moving well and looking good. It's been a fun way to get the best of both worlds 😊 Timestamps: 00:00 - Worst Fitness Mistakes 13:35 - The Negativity Advantage 26:04 - Optimal Workout Myth 44:56 - Getting Bigger AND Stronger 57:44 - Low Reps Vs. My main takeaways: 1) Be process-oriented rather than result-oriented (better results, more sustainable). 2) Lower weight / higher reps are kinder to the body and can achieve very similar results for most goals. 3) Build a comprehensive system that is adaptive, rather than focusing on a binary right/wrong approach.

I am a huge fan of Dr. Helms, he brings immense contributions the the natty world (with Omar Isuf and Dr. Trexler on Iron Culture, in 3DMJ, his research, etc.). He is an outstanding communicator and bring tons to the table, and so do you. And this collaboration was one that I wasn't expecting and didn't know that I needed. Great interview and discussions. I am more from a weight training background and am just now dipping my toes into calisthenics (so the opposite path from you) and your content has been great. You did an amazing job with the interview and I hope to see you and Helms exchange more often

To Dr. Helms' point on not even having to walk for work, I would contend that as smartphones take the place of PCs and laptops, it's never become easier to remain productive while on the go thanks to much greater portability.

On the topic of motivation, for me it started as a negative, I was so disgusted with both my performance and physique, now I've gotten from 85kg down to 67.5kg and gained some muscle. Now my motivation is "What is my limit?" and "I feel so much better now and I wonder how much better it can still get" kinda

This is the best podcast so far imo. It has most deep dive advice for people who actually know a bit about training already. Alot of the others, no offense, you talk about the same things which is understandable. I wish you would do one with Tom Merrick again, but where you truly discuss how to program for flexibility, how and when to add reps, time, sets etc. Cheers massive fan from Denmark

My motivation is my age unfortunately and I smoked ciggerettes for 30 yrs, then I felt I needed to stop immediately. It was so bad. I got over it and a yr and a half later Im commuting on my fitness bike 14 miles almost every single day. Lifting weights, using my rowing machine and treadmill in the winter.. Im 54.

Eric, I would like to get some coaching but I don’t want to spend the money for it. What do I have to do to get the most out of my training without having to spend big money on a coach? Do I just need to get a PhD? Invest hundreds or thousands of hours into personal development reading books and research articles? Get connected in the community and network with researchers? Save me money on a coach please! Much love ;)

Look up and take notes on content from guys like these. Between this channel, Mike Israetel’s podcast appearances and Renaissance Periodization, 3DMJ (Helms’s channel). They have plenty of info about how to exercise with good technique, how to structure training sessions, how to select the exercises you do, and everything else you could imagine. Ask yourself, “what do you want a coach to help you accomplish”, and then use the free resources above to make a plan. Monitor your progress: Keep a workout journal, track your weight and other measurements if you want to, see if you’re getting stronger. Enjoy the process.

He's said in other videos that except for advanced lifters with competition as their goal (so basically 99% of us), that you should just worry about the basics and do the work, and not worry about fine tuning your program trying to eek out marginal differences.

Bunch of jargon and abbreviations made it hard to understand for a novice or international audience, I hope next time we can get more explanations about the concepts. Also more energy in the voice wouldn't hurt, I almost fell asleep, and I was listening while jogging lol
