It took me until this video and rewatching to process the fact that Sakurai had acknowledged Hax - and by extension, the Melee scene's existence. It feels so obvious to me now like... Of course Sakurai would know Smash's competitive scene. But Nintendo would never want it formally acknowledged in their marketing and that's the only place we really saw him before his own channel.

@@turokokokoko9714 I mean, sure, leffen sucks, but have you *seen* how toxic folks can get? He's far from some kind of anomaly and his presence is not enough to alienate companies like Nintendo. You know what is, though? The faces of an entire era of Smash players sexting with a child (ZeRo) and getting a blowjob from a child (Nairo) and having a romantic relationship with children (Ally.) And then the rest of the community dismissing the child in the latter two cases for his conduct in the relationships where he was being *raped,* all whilst harboring Nairo and supporting him, not only rhetorically but materially, in his efforts to bully his victim into submission. The situation with Leffen is typical drama. You can find guys like him all over the place. What I'm more concerned about is people who still support Nairo and ZeRo in particular and the sheer amount of predators that we have to ban every month.

Hax isn't even the only player with reported hand injuries from playing Melee, though I think his were worse than most others (if not the outright worst). Competitive Melee has grown to incredible levels and created some amazing moments in gaming history, but I'd definitely understand not wanting to design a game in such a way that players injure themselves in the never-ending quest to perfect it. Also if this is the first time any of y'all have seen Sakurai's videos I highly recommend his channel, lots of interesting stuff on there.

Clicked on this video because I relate to it so much. I’ve been playing Super Smash Bros Series ever since I was 4 years old. Smash 64 all the way until ultimate. I’ve developed a condition known as Bilateral De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis, which can be either called Gamer’s Thumb, Texting Thumb, Mommy’s Thumb, or a sister form of tendinitis. Extreme pain while over extending the thumb which is caused by overuse/strain of using the thumb too much. I found this condition to especially hurt using the GameCube controller, which is still being used by many Smash players since it’s debut for the GameCube and Smash Melee. The GameCube controller and many other controllers that Nintendo manufactures are not ergonomic at all, and can be a death knell for your wrists! Which is why it’s important to always stretch before/after gameplay and to ice it to prevent long-term injuries. I still have this condition and have had to spend a lot of money to finally see a positive form of recovery. I’ve now transitioned away from using the GameCube Controller and now use the Pro Controller for the Switch, as it feels better in the palm of my hands and a bit more ergonomic. Please gamers, remember to take care of your health. I know many of us game as an escape or relief of stress, and losing the ability to game from physical pain can also take a toll on your mental health. Remember to stretch and ice after long hours of gameplay!

The thing about Melee's fast pace is that it was made before video games had a standard buffer window. The only buffer system that exists in Melee to my knowledge is holding down on the c-stick during a grab or pummel to initiate a frame perfect d-throw without the opponent escaping. Nothing else in the game has buffer, so you need to be exactly frame perfect every input in order to play at the top level. Project M players didn't have this problem because a 3-frame buffer window was included in the game. Players wouldn't have any issue if there was some buffer for inputs, and it would lower the skill ceiling enough to keep this kind of injury from happening.

My right hand/arm has some sort of RSI from going hard on competitive Melee for only like 6 months back in 2017, primarily from wavedashing and jump-cancel grabs, quickly ending my Melee "career". Coming from other competitive controller games with low APM, I didn't even know that was a thing. I still commonly have little flare-ups when using a computer mouse, sometimes from a controller, almost constant minor discomfort when using either, but 'not bad enough to warrant surgery'. It's important to have awareness out there for players of all levels to prevent these injuries.
@chronology556
@chronology556 11 ай бұрын
RSI can go away. Stop playing for a while, like weeks or months and use more ergonomic controllers. The GCC isn’t terribly ergonomic, but it’s not atrocious, it’s the sheer amount of inputs that cause RSI. If you’re on the older side of things like 25+, expect to need to micromanage your hand pain with melee, but traditional fighting games like Street Fighter 6, have less inputs overall, so you can try that.

@@AvengingEnder I also play KOF and SF,and traditional fighting games in general using Arcade Sticks and keyboards and pads, but I’ve mostly stopped playing Melee. I lost interest. So I guess that has helped my hand pain, also don’t downplay massages and ice water treatment, it worked for my tendinitis. I’ve also developed minor symptoms of carpal tunnel, so I stopped aggravating my hands when I notice those symptoms, I also have utilized hand stretches and hand strengthening techniques, although the latter, I’ve barely scratched the surface. Still the key is rest and stop playing for a LONG time, then if you still want to play video games, you must ease yourself into it. Melee probably not a good idea, but Smash 64 is a decent alternative.

people sometimes wonder why sakurai doesn't just make the next smash game more technically demanding like melee, but you gotta put yourself in his place. imagine if your creation allowed people to hurt themselves on their way to get good. you'd probably want to stray away from that direction, too.
@GustoFormula
@GustoFormula Жыл бұрын
That's fair, but really the controller is mostly the problem and not the game itself and I hope Sakurai knows that. The distance from B to Y/X and how fast and often you need to close that distance as fox (and falco to a lesser degree) is the main problem as I understand it. But even then there's a ton of players who have played an insane amount without any hand issues. Design a more ergonomic controller and take away L-canceling for good measure and it's fine if the game is technical.

It's understandable why he designed Brawl and 4 to be the way they are. Melee is simply too fast, and the fact that players have confirmed to be suffering extreme levels of pain in their hands because of the game's pace and the fact that the GC controller has flat grips justifies why Brawl and 4 were made to be slower and casual friendly. I do think he finally hit that sweet spot of pace with Ultimate. It can play fast and slow, and that fluctuation of pace is easier on the hands than Melee which is 200 MPH at all times.

In a way yes, but at the same time Melee was designed to be more casual in mind, there were just tons of interesting stuff because the dev left some bugs in and if I remember they rushed Melee. But the Wii also sold significantly more console compared to the gamecube (like 5x more).

I think part of this is also a technique and self regulation issue though. Otherwise, you'd be seeing this with more players. If you're in pain, you should look at the way you're inputting stuff and also take a break. Otherwise, you end up with chronic problems like this.
