this is my favorite song on the album. i actually think this might be the best bridge i've ever listened to in a piece of music: "i talk to the face in the mirror, but he can't get through." thom yorke i'm eternally thankful for your existence.

It’s the most beautiful part of the song in my opinion but it’s also nearly identical to Michael Jackson’s man in the mirror which is hard for me to ignore. Radiohead diehard since forever but lately I don’t really get as moved as everyone still does. Pray for me.

Imagine you're Thom Yorke, and the guy you started playing in a band with in college decides to literally become one of the world's best composers, and then when you're older and write this song, he's there to put that kind of orchestration on it. Beautiful. I can't wait to have this record in my hands.

@@sodoffbaldrick No he's composed tons of chamber and orchestral pieces, also all of the strings you hear in Radiohead. Thom's a great musician but Jonny is a great composer. Thom doesn't even know theory so he doesn't have that ability. And Jonny's written like 8 orchestral film scores. Suspiria was electronic. There's a distinction between musician/songwriter and composer

JESUS KNOCKS ON YOUR HEART AND LONGS FOR YOU TO ANSWER! HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE ANYONE PERISH INTO HELL. GOD LOVES YOU SO HE GIVES YOU FREE WILL AND A CHOICE TO ACCEPT HIM OR REJECT HIM. TO LOVE HIM OR TO LOVE SIN/THIS WORLD. CALL UPON JESUS & ASK HIM TO FORGIVE YOUR SINS! SURRENDER YOUR WILL & YOUR LIFE TO HIM & HE WILL GIVE YOU ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN! PICTURE YOUR BEST DAY ON EARTH TIMES A BILLION FOR ETERNITY, THAT'S HEAVEN! NOW PICTURE YOUR WORST DAY ON EARTH TIMES A BILLION FOR ETERNITY, THAT'S HELL! HE WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT SO IF YOU REJECT HIM YOU WILL BE SEPARATED FROM HIM & HIS BLESSINGS (LOVE, PEACE, JOY, HOPE, REST, ETC). IN HELL YOU WILL BE ALONE WITHOUT GOD OR PEOPLE... YOU WILL BE HOPELESS, IN DESPAIR & AGONY FOREVER! GOD'S STANDARD FOR HEAVEN IS PERFECTION AND ONLY JESUS (THE SON OF GOD/GOD IN THE FLESH) LIVED THAT PERFECT LIFE! HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE & TOOK THE WRATH OF THE FATHER ON THE CROSS FOR YOUR SINS! GOD IS JUST SO HE MUST PUNISH SIN & HE IS HOLY SO NO SIN CAN ENTER HIS KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. IF YOU ARE IN CHRIST ON JUDGEMENT DAY GOD WILL SEE YOU AS HIS PERFECT SON (SINLESS SINCE YOUR SINS ARE COVERED BY JESUS' OFFERING). YOU CAN ALSO CHOOSE TO REJECT JESUS' GIFT/SACRIFICE & PAY FOR YOUR OWN SIN WITH DEATH (HELL) BUT THAT SEEMS PRETTY FOOLISH! GOD SEES & HEARS EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID & DONE. YOU WONT WIN AN ARGUMENT WITH HIM & YOU CANT DEFEND ANY OF YOUR SINS TO HIM. YOU'RE NOT A GOOD PERSON, I'M NOT A GOOD PERSON... ONLY GOD IS GOOD! WE'RE ALL GUILTY WITHOUT ACCEPTING JESUS' SACRIFICE FOR OUR SINS! MUHAMMAD DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, BUDDHA DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, NO PASTOR/NO PRIEST/NO SAINT/NO ANCESTOR DIED FOR YOUR SINS, MARY DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, NO IDOLS OR FALSE gods DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO MUSICIAN OR CELEBRITY DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO INFLUENCER OR KZbin STAR DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO SCIENTIST OR POLITICIAN DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO ATHLETE OR ACTOR DIED FOR YOUR SINS! STOP WORSHIPING THESE PEOPLE! JESUS CHRIST ALONE DIED FOR YOUR SINS & WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE! HE IS ALIVE & COMING BACK VERY SOON WITH JUDGEMENT (THESE ARE END TIMES)! PREPARE YOURSELVES, TURN FROM SIN & RUN TO JESUS! HE KNOWS YOUR PAIN & TROUBLES, HE WANTS TO HEAL & RESTORE YOU! TALK TO HIM LIKE A BEST FRIEND! ASK HIM TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU & HELP YOU TO BELIEVE IF YOU DOUBT! DON'T WAIT TO CRY OUT! NO ONE IS PROMISED TOMORROW! HE LONGS FOR YOU TO INVITE HIM IN, HE LOVES YOU MORE THAN ANY PERSON EVER COULD, HE CREATED YOU! Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6 "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 10:33 “For the wages of sin is death (hell), but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”-Romans 6:23

The strings are really everything here. The first and last minute are the best parts for me. First part is absolutely ethereal, and the ending is so special, especially combined with the ecstasy of the ritual in the music video. Despite adding drums and bass, the instrumental climax itself actually remains rather reserved which makes for a great contrast to the dramatic video. It's still a climax mind you, but it's not overdone, which makes it really, really special to me.

Hey Thom and Johnny, I don’t know if you’ll ever see this because it’s just another stupid KZbin comment but I’m an eighteen year old going to college this fall for animation. I found Radiohead around age fourteen and have used your music in all of my animations ever since. I am a complete amateur, but your music is like a creativity plug for my brain and fits perfectly with the stories in my head. When I’m having an art block or just feel uninspired, a single listen to your music immediately puts me back in a flow. It’s like magic. I want to thank you guys personally for this. This song is immediately making me think of a new animation concept, possibly with a robot child and moss-covered landscapes. Time to get drawing :))

They are really druids is my first question. (?) Over a decade ago the druidic index was hovering in Europa as in about 100,000. What is that number now? Rome wasn't burned in a day. Boudicca isn't here to lead us. Hadrian is gone. Sometimes I feel like the machines have won, that is to say the very machines that are so odious that we must throw ourselves upon their gears & apparatus in order to prevent them from functioning at all. {Paraphrasing Mario Savio.} You bring Glory to the revolution...

I feel similarly-this The Smile song was the first I heard two weeks after it was put on KZbin in anticipation of ALFAA. I instantly loved it and felt it deeply as tears streamed down my world weary face. At the time I was in active, multiple times daily heroin addiction. A call to consciousness for these troubled times. And as incredible of a work of musical art as it is, I purposefully skip listening to it a lot of days because now I can say I'm a recovering heroin addict and while I skipped this song a lot of days then, I skip more so now as feelings are so difficult and to a degree, foreign to me, as I eviscerated any trace of feeling bad for the first half of my addiction, as often as possible every day. The second half of my 7 year addiction was just literal hell on earth. I doubt if anyone knows more thoroughly the feeling of abhorrence, hatred and shame of oneself than that of an active heroin addict. And wanting to die, truly wanting that and sometimes trying to make it happen, because all light is gone, all hope extinguished and sometimes it felt like hell would be a reprieve....

This is a quick first impression/analysis of the video, I hope many more will be added to this thread. So, we have this guy, having what seems like a seizure. Around him, known people, maybe they're some sort of mystic/religious brotherhood; the older one is having a similar reaction, it seems like some sort of PTSD, where he recalls the ritual. At the end, the young seizure-hit guy seems to lie down, maybe he's dead. So this is my theory; the young guy and the old guy are in reality the same person, like a representation of different stages of life. The ritual is the traumatic event, or a metaphor for it. The old PTSD guy is reliving both his trauma and his reaction to the trauma. In a way, his young self has died after the ritual, and this rugged, bitter version of him is what remains, the path people often go through in life. I think it ties well to the song, which is about going through a bad time, with the hope of coming out alive to the other side; the hope itself is functional to reaching the light at the end of the tunnel. So, in some way, the song both talks about the present and the future, and so does the video. The protagonist, by dying, has been freed of his past condition, even if the scar remains, even if the trauma is hard to digest. Maybe reliving and acknowledging the trauma are the first steps to go towards the exit, and be, in the end, free in the knowledge.

The ritual is definitely some type of psychedelic shamanistic guided experience In which you’re confronted with some of your deepest lingering suppressed emotions, thoughts, doubts, fears, horrors but ultimately leads to ego death. From there true growth and understanding is possible. I feel like the fire represents a darker controlling entity that seeks to take advantage of this process and is fueled by anger and driven mad by the thought of Oblivion, and the fact that mortals will gain what they have lost. The world is more magical than you could ever imagine. Shamanism provides a guide to that hidden world. I feel like they’re two different individuals since they’re both pictured in the beginning and in the end by the fire but they’re different in the way that they’re experiencing these realities And it shows later when they are at the fire after the experience is letting loose its grip how they are digesting the experience. But that’s just from my take.
