This was a free concert supported by the Madrid Townhall on the occasion of (the patron saint of Madrid) Saint Isidro's bank holiday. The socialist party was very interested in pop music and wanted to give a boost to a city that was culturally dead after 40 years of dictatorship. The Spanish were very welcoming and the concert was a success. Morrissey was also very energetic, he danced wildly but wasn't very talkative.
As in Barcelona two days earlier the Smiths played a 18 track setlist including the almost forgotten "This Charming Man" and the occasionally skipped "Barbarism Begins At Home", but not the lesser known "Stretch Out And Wait".
Morrissey introduced the current single "Shakespeare's Sister" as such: "This is our new single, it's called 'Shakespeare's Sister'." Similarly, "Hand In Glove" was introduced with the simple "This song is called 'Hand In Glove'." During "Still Ill" Morrissey fell to the floor and writhed like a dying animal. The most memorable quote of the evening was the introduction of "Meat Is Murder": "We have seen your national sport... and it's not very kind..." Besides that, Morrissey's banter consisted mostly of hello's and thank you's, as in "Thank you, you're very kind... thank you" after "Handsome Devil" and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now".
When the Smiths returned to the stage for the third encore Morrissey told the audience "Thank you, we're very happy, thank you." During the ending of "Barbarism Begins At Home" Morrissey slowly removed his shirt while dancing, swung it around, and threw it into the audience. After "You've Got Everything Now" he simply said "Goodbye! We love you... thank you... goodbye... thank you..." and the band left stage a final time.
The complete concert was recorded and broadcast on Spanish television programme Edad De Oro. This was repeated in digital in 2006.
