man.... its so crazy how ON FORM their live performances were, despite marr not being able to duplicate his guitar lines to oblivion like he does on record. them being stripped down and raw live is my favourite thing in the world, really lends the tracks a post-punky edge

The first few rows are so mesmerized they can't move. A guy I worked with at a stereo store in Charlotte turned me on to them, and I was totally blown away. Unlike anything I'd ever heard. And the albums were so perfectly sequenced.

@@ScottishTeeVee It's been so long I just remembered - I had tickets to see them in Atlanta, and then Lou Reed the following night. Drove down to Atlanta from Charlotte, 200 miles or so, and the Smiths cancelled their show. Fortunately I got to see Lou Reed the following night, which really helped allay the disappointment. I think this was 1986.

I didn't 'get' The Smiths until Strangeways.. I was always a metal/prog head (still am) in the 80's, but a friend persisted until I understood! I still regard them as one of the greatest and most original British bands of all time.

Maybe not the "best" singing voice. I'm quite happy with Johnny's voice singing the same songs - while still playing those excellent quitar lines! - on his recent live appearances. But Morrissey was a completely unique stage presence at the time. Not androgynous, the way Bowie or Prince were.

This is spectacularly singular among all live Smiths clips that I've seen. Guitar and bass tone was spectacular. An incredible document of the Smiths at the top of their game. That bit at the end of Barbarism was the icing - not only for the long instrumental section, but to see BOTH Morrisey and Marr dancing. Incredible!

If you think this is good you have to listen to the live bootlegs, there are some really good recordings and they play twice as fast and loud as this, look up “I stole and I lied” and “thank your lucky stars”

Never ever gets old....These songs have a freshness and a sparkling drive and Morrissey's lyrics will still be relevant to each generation that comes along. Glad I was in my early 20's when they came along. I remember phoning my brother when I'd bought their first album to tell him just how good they were. Just brilliant live too as this TV appearance clearly shows. Although the Geordies look as though they must have been drinking embalming fluid before the gig. Probably all Duran Duran fans !

The Smiths were one of those bands where every instrument and vocal all stood out, the talent was of a very high standard and gelled well for a unique sound and time. To have been 15 when I found them in 1986 late in their career, well, the pleasure and the privilege was mine and will be untill I die.

A friend had a spare ticket to see The Smiths in 84 and as a hardcore punk I turned it down, one of my biggest regrets , as they became one of my favourite bands in later life.

For me barbarism begins at home is one of the songs for why i enjoy listening to The Smiths so much...the band sounds awesome not only for Morrissey's lyrics and voice or Marr's great riffs but because the whole band as a unit complement perfectly with each other, andy rourke's bass lines and the drum from Joyce makes this song one of the best in my opinion
