The most addictive part of listening to The Smiths is the insane balance they have of making music that comes off as optimistic yet haunting at the same time. I agree re: Johnny's melodies are always so bright, but Morrissey's lyrics are usually depressing. Damn, I had LOVED this band when I had been a teenager! They were part of the group of bands I had been introduced to in high school that had changed my life. The kicker had been in 8th grade when I had seen the video for, Spellbound by Siouxsie and the Banshees. But, the first time I had heard the Cure's song Boys Don't Cry, while carpooling my freshman year, it had really grabbed me and wouldn't let me go! Then, How Soon is Now had happened. Then, Bela Legosi's Dead by Bauhaus. And, finally, the first Sister's of Mercy album. That was my band line-up in high school!

I bought The Queen is dead back in 94. I was preparing for applying the university and barely had the money, but bought it anyway. I had to walk 2 districts: almost 40 blocks, to reach a friend and borrow my ticket back home, cause i lived outside the city. the whole time i was listening (it was a cassette) in a cheap yellow walkman, i was 17. I was in my teens in 1986 and had a lot of problems in my school. Some larger guys were bullying me as I were often misgendered by adults, who thought I was a girl due to my blond hair, face and slim body. It was so humiliating and it has haunted me ever since. When I was about 10 or 11 my dad would play The Smiths, among other great artists, to my brother and I, and this song was the song we would hear the most, I knew every word I'd say.. As somebody wrote lines down "imagine the world without smiths" and other "i'm in the hospital and the only thing that gives me confort is the smiths"; i'm 52 and I still listen to them!!! by the way, i met morrissey and shaked hands with him at audley pub in mayfair, same pub michele obama ate when in London, i worked there and he came to drink a beer! what an emotion!!! i didn't know what to say!!! i'm a brazilian and at that time(15 years ago) i worked there! Guys I said "I love you to him" and I almost cried!!!
