My childhood friend has Alzheimer's and Dementia. Yesterday he was wearing a The Smiths T-shirt and trying to tune his guitar. I got it tuned up for him and started giving him the tune. 10 mins later he was playing and singing it like he was a professional. Music is your medicine.

I went to Fairmount today (April 8th 2024) and saw the TOTAL ECLIPSE. There was almost nobody else there ! Retraced Morrissey's steps, of course, including the town and James Dean's old house and barn. It was epic !!
@EduardCarnarvon6 ай бұрын
Strange question and hello. Let's say I'm flying to New York from Amsterdam and want to go to Fairmont, how do I get there by train and where exactly is Fairmont? Is James Dean also buried in Fairmont? Are any of Dean's relatives still alive? Kind regards, Eduard
@lkeeble6 ай бұрын
@@EduardCarnarvon Hi there ! I am not sure about getting there by train - do you have a way to rent a car? Consider flying to Chicago and then drive to Fairmount. Once you get past the suburbs there is a lot of open farmland that is nice to drive in (I like it anyway and it's the kind of scenery that Dean grew up around). Public transportation such as trains and buses is not good outside of major cities (planes have won). Yes James Dean is buried in Fairmount. You can find Fairmount on google maps. James Dean's little cousin (who you might have seen if you've seen the picture of James Dean pushing a little boy in a toy car outside his house) still lives in the house where James lived before moving to California. I'm not sure about other living relatives. There is a James Dean museum in Fairmount and also a James Dean Gallery. At the Gallery there are some friendly people who can tell you stories about Morrissey if you ask because one of them is a photographer who did a picture of Dean for one of Morrissey's album/record covers. Also if you do rent a car you can pull into the driveway of Dean's old house and have a quick look around and snap a couple of pictures (as I did). His cousin doesn't mind as long as you are discreet.
@brown22sugar256 ай бұрын
@@EduardCarnarvonI’ve been to Fairmount twice for the James Dean festival and your best bet would be to fly to Indianapolis, rent a car and drive (because our passenger rail is garbage) about an hour north to Fairmount. It’s about halfway in between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. James Dean is buried there and his younger cousin (now 80) Marcus Winslow is alive and still lives in Fairmount. He’s probably the only family member left that actually knew him well. Hope this helps.

@@brown22sugar25 Hello! Thank you very much. I was very pleased with your answer. Your information was very helpful. Is hitchhiking possible in the USA? I don't have a driver's license. @@EduardCarnarvon Hitchhiking hasn’t been popular since the 70’s so I wouldn’t recommend it but you could probably find a greyhound bus to take you. Stephen and I used to walk the endless meadow landscape of Moss Side in Manchester during school summer holidays. He was forever singing and I remember him vowing to be bigger than Benny from Abba at one point, or was it Benny from Crossroads? anyway to have been so close to what became such a massive iconic figure is a privilege of my mental illness. Stephen used to say things that at the time seemed so random and out of place but as history has shown were actually quite amazingly insightful. A couple of examples of what mean: One day on the Moss Side meadow as we coupled endless daisies together to make a daisy chain (that still holds the Claremont Road daisy chain record 252 daisies or 621 inches) Stephen. or as he liked to be called then Stephen turned to me and said 'Mike Joyce is a money grabbing talentless drum stick holder isn't he?' I replied 'I don't know who is he?'. Stephen said weirdly 'someone I have yet to meet but trust me and what I say'. I said 'ok'. Later that day when we had been crowned Claremont Road Daisy Chain Champions 1976 (2nd year running) Stephen turned to me and said ' I will admit that leaving the band at the height of their success left me feeling vulnerable and I will fear for my future but who could have guessed that as solo Morrissey I will sell out stadiums all over the world, particularly in Mexico and be bigger than the Smiths ever were'. I said 'what?' and Stephen said ' oh, ignore me it's the Perrier gone straight to my head.' I asked 'who are the Smiths and are they causing you trouble?'. Stephen said ' Who are the Smiths..exactly and no they can't bother me'. it was all very cryptic back then looking and listening to a 17 year old Morrissey Daisy Chain Champ (twice over) but as I said with what history has taught us it's as if he knew his destiny.

This is where James Dean grew up in a small town in Indiana. He was born on February 8th, 1931 (and died in 1955, the same year "Rebel Without a Cause" came out). I wouldn't be surprised if Morrissey filmed this video on his exact birthday since it's obviously winter in this clip. *Edit: LOL-- he actually wrote "Morrissey--Feb. 7th, 1988" on a wall. Man, I can't believe this song is that old. I thought it was from the '90s!

qlock 18 don't worry about the cynicism shown by people like Blankface; people who Morrissey would have dismissive disdain for. You keep educating your teenage mates - plenty more bands out there cut from similar cloth; Inspiral Carpets, James, The Cure, The Jam, The Undertones and a wealth of talent from across the Pond; The Pixies, R.E.M. , 10,000 Maniacs.....(P.S. don't bother with the Grateful Dead - they were sh!t)

I have a wonderful memory of being a teen, the car loaded with my friends, and this song blaring at full volume. We were headed to a house party in Hollywood, not a care in the world or a dollar in our pockets. Everything was a big deal, yet nothing else mattered; just being together. We would kill or die for each other without question. Twenty years later, three of those friends are no longer with us and this song reminds me of them. RIP guys, you're loved and missed greatly; thank you for being a vital part of my life and I look forward to seeing you again in the next world.

E segue a vida! Morrissey eternamente.

Thank you, Morrissey, for this stirring tribute to James Dean, who will always be one of the great Midwestern Icons and Midwestern Sons. He rose from the Indiana farm soil and left an indelible mark in his brief, fleeting time with us. And thank you for the tip of the hat to James Whitcomb Riley, a native Hoosier and The People's Poet.I can imagine a young Jim staring out at the midwestern horizon whilst reading his book of collected poems.

You shouldn’t wear the art you like as a kind of badge of honour. Morrissey is just a reactionary, quite a cognitively dissonant one at that. To his lyrics and musicianship, I say fair enough; but he seems quite a bitter, arrogant man these days, one who perhaps hasn’t been told to shut up enough by those around him.
