If you loved Bigmouth Strikes Again, the instrumentation and showcasing of all the band members I think you'll love their "Meat is Murder" album which came out the year before. My favorite by them.

When you get more mature, you'll learn that songs are not just about instrumentation.... Lyrics and emotion are what you're not keying in on such a great track as I Know It's Over.

Never Had No One Ever started life as Marr's homage to I Need Somebody by The Stooges - Morrissey, getting the idea, busked the vocal into shape, hence the lack of lyrics...It was probably meant as primarily a live-performance vehicle, and it definitely sounds better either onstage with the Gannon/Marr guitar team, or in the famous outtake version with the trumpet. I Know It's Over - Dave was probably remembering one of those famous Jeff Buckley covers. (A couple of studio takes exist, but JB would sometimes quote it during a certain other song). Speaking of songs intended for live performance, Bigmouth is hard to disassociate from those late-1986 performances where it was the rabble-rousing, infinitely-extendable, final encore, with a couple of over-long performances suggesting it was turning into The Smiths' equivalent of What'd I Say, or Twist And Shout, or Turn On Your Lovelight. TIALTNGO - so much for teen angst, it's relevant to adults in their thirties and forties (i.e: having already exceeded their genetically-natural lifespan) who are still trapped in the oppressive/abusive/retarding environment that is the family unit - whether because of "caring responsibilities" which they should not be burdened with, or simply because of artificial ("state"/"business"-sustained) poverty. Prominent basslines - fitting that this should be brought up in the week Rourke left this vale of tears...the title track is always cited as one of the great Rourke moments (and if you wonder why, try the eight-minute mix-outtake version)

"This vale of tears..." Reminds me of Dr. Smith on "Lost In Space." Morrissey quotes the "Galactic Castaway" once or twice..."this unhappy planet..." (Ouija Board, Ouija Board) and even the seance from the episode "Ghost In Space." In Morrissey's "Autobiography" he recalls the programme and his admiration for Major Don West. Personally, I think the reluctant stowaway Dr. Smith was his role model! Apt to go off in a flap and wallow in his misery! Could also be one of the reasons he called his band "The Smiths."

In a way it's fun that you reacted to this album just as I did 38 years ago. I mean with the same likes and dislikes about the songs. I was personally lyrically oriented back the so I was more forgiving on "Cemetry gates" and "Vicar in a tutu". The musical press always hail this as their master piece, but I think you can find more core Smiths in "Hatful of Hollow". At first I was bewildered by your video 'cos I thought I saw Armand Duplantis reacting to The Smiths. He usually jumps to Avicii. Thanks a lot for your views and your effort, sir.

Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others - Welcome to the biggest and contested conversations in Smithsdom! There’s no hidden meaning. No deeper philosophy. So, why did such a genius lyricist destroy one of Marr’s most beautiful and melodic tracks with such meaningless and silly lyrics? Nobody knows. Personally, it’s one of my most favourite Smiths tracks, and I think it makes more sense if you think about Morrissey’s influences. He adores the British ‘Carry On…’ films, and the actors that were in them. If you don’t know what they are, they’re comedy films from the 60’s and 70’s that were camp, titillating, sexist, rude, silly and sometimes obnoxious with incredibly outdated jokes that would most definitely be cancelled in this day and age. There is one particular film, Carry On… Camping, where the campers are doing morning exercises in a field, and the very busty Barbara Windsor’s bra pops off, giving the rest of the campsite an eye-full. Personally, I think that’s the inspiration for the lyrics. Morrissey references another Carry On… film in the song, too: Carry On… Cleopatra, which is obviously set in ancient Egypt. One of the actors, Kenneth Williams (who requires a whole other conversation to explain, and to understand why Morrissey would reference him), plays a very camp Mark Anthony, and says “Oh, I say!” in a very classically famous way. I believe that the song is an homage to Carry On… and that quintessential Englishness that they represent, from a time that was incredibly influential to Morrissey, both in film and music. Remember, The Smiths aren’t just a band, they are an entire culture that, if you are just doing a passing glance you will miss some really important things that turn “just a band” into an entire lifestyle of devoted followers. Morrissey’s lyrics are so deeply personal, that to fully understand them you have to be an obsessive fan. Simply looking at Morrissey’s lyrics from a gay perspective is the first step.

I think Morrissey explicitly made silly lyrics to keep the focus on the genius instrumentation. Sure, it could be an instrumental, but if that was the case, it would've just been left as a B-side.

Half of the time, Smiths songs are about the fusion of the band's skills with Morrisey's vocal talent and wit. The other half of the time, Morrissey is just there to keep the spotlight distracted so the genius musicians behind him can get on with doing their thing. On those ones, just ignore him and listen to the guitar.

Maybe you need to be a Gen Xer to really appreciate I Know It's Over. We were suckers for the maudlin and morose back then, it just spoke to us. Teens these days don't like to be sad, back then we wore our darkness like proud battle scars.
