I’m amazed at the lyrics on this song. For a song written in 1986 the words are just as relevant today ! Never mind the title of the song ! Lol. Probably the smiths finest work their Sgt pepper of the 1980’s. U2 got all the kudos with “the Joshua tree” but this record is far better in my opinion.

I waited a day out of respect to revisit this classic. And OP - A+ for the pic - F for “rusty spinner.” It’s spanner, mate. My God Save the Queen.
@SundarBJJ2 жыл бұрын
Yes! A vital correction, when he breaks into the palace he doesn’t bring a “rusty spinner“ with him. They got that wrong. He brings a “rusty spanner“, which has a double meaning. It’s British slang for a wrench, and it’s also the pole upon which a royal flag is carried. See how that brilliantly combines the proletariat and royal classes into one object? And, why is it rusty? Ask yourself that. Papers are due at noon.

I'll give it a try... Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes Hemmed in like a boar between arches Her very Lowness with a head in a sling I'm truly sorry, but it sounds like a wonderful thing - When she dies, she's leaving a dreary, depressing country. I said Charles, don't you ever crave To appear on the front of the Daily Mail Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil? - The whole monarchy is a joke. Maybe Charles can see it, maybe not. Oh And so, I checked all the registered historical facts And I was shocked into shame to discover How I'm the 18th pale descendant Of some old queen or other - The singer of the song is embarrassed to have a queen as an ancestor. Oh, has the world changed, or have I changed? Oh has the world changed, or have I changed? Some nine-year old tough who peddles drugs I swear to God I swear, I never even knew what drugs were - The singer thinks his thoughts about the monarchy are innocent, so he must be living in a world that isn't so innocent. Oh So, I broke into the palace With a sponge and a rusty spanner She said, "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing" I said, "That's nothing, you should hear me play piano" - Morrissey was (and still is?) known for his poor singing. A lot of people hated his voice. He's joking about easily breaking into Buckingham Palace, running into the queen, and she insults him, knowing who he is, yet he has a witty comeback. We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry And talk about precious things But when you're tied to your Mother's apron No-one talks about castration Oh - Perhaps Charles could be a regular person to actually have a meaningful conversation with, but he's just a Mama's boy with no balls. We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry And talk about precious things Like love and law and poverty Oh, these are the things that kill me - Repeating same sentiment. We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry And talk about precious things But the rain that flattens my hair Oh, these are the things that kill me - Repeating the same sentiment. All their lies about make-up and long hair, are still there - Maybe something about gender roles? Not sure. Past the pub who saps your body And the church who'll snatch your money The Queen is dead, boys And it's so lonely on a limb - Complaining about the type of society, particularly the UK's, that has a monarchy - pub culture where you sit around drinking, wasting your time, only to end up without energy, heading back to work for the week, just to repeat. Churches that are more concerned with employing priests/ministers and clergy than actually helping the common person. The Queen is now dead, and her life was lonely, despite appearances. She had a position that kept her above everyone else, so she couldn't really relate to anyone. Her own kids were screw-ups. Her family is full of incestuous murderers and warmongers. It's basically just her with no real connections to normal human beings. Past the pub that wrecks your body And the church, all they want is your money The Queen is dead, boys And it's so lonely on a limb Life is very long, when you're lonely Life is very long, when you're lonely Life is very long, when you're lonely Life is very long, when you're lonely - Repeating the same sentiment.

basically morrissey taking the piss out of the monarchy and how useless and irrelevant to today's world it is. he talks about the real world around him which is bleak and full of problems and contrasts it to the superficial royal family who skirt around these issues from the comfort of their quiet and dry lives, pretending to engage but really all they're concerned with is their appearance and that their hair doesn't get wet, because thats their only purpose, to keep up appearance, they have no power. i take the castration line to mean that despite the fact the british public should be talking about seperating themselves from the royal family, they have an attachment to the queen as a mother figure being 'tied to her apron' and so it's never discussed. the queen is dead is referring to the death of the monarchy, it no longer serves a purpose. and so modern british culture is lost without it's colonial identity. it hangs on a limb to its old identity with the persistence of the royal family. but it has an identity crisis and nothing to void that gap but distractors like pubs drugs and religion.
