I can honestly say this song was a defining point in my childhood. It was ‘84 and I was 12. I was at my best friend Sandy’s house when all of a sudden I hear this guitar riff and Morrissey’s distinct voice coming out of her older sister Marie’s room. I immediately ask Sandy what Marie was playing and she shrugged so I went to Marie’s room and stood by her door as she was applying her eyeliner in the mirror and singing along. I saw the Hatful of Hollow album cover on her bed and asked her what she was listening to. She casually replied “The Smiths” and I made a mental note. That moment in Marie’s room changed me. The sound was unlike anything I had ever heard before. l literally felt hypnotized and I had a weird sense that I would never be the same again. Like all of a sudden I felt older and wiser. I eventually got the record a few weeks later and have been listening to it ever since. I’m 50 now and I’ll never forget the feeling of hearing The Smiths for the first time.

I can't believe Morrissey and Marr don't like this song. I've always loved it, especially the falsetto at the end, the lyrics, and how hard hitting it is. This version is already great, but then the Peel/Hatful of Hollow version blows it away (in my opinion) and that was a live performance!
@panterxbeats10 жыл бұрын
"Morrissey has stated on more than one occasion that "What Difference Does It Make?" is among his least favourite Smiths songs. He picked on the "rockist" influences and the "cliche" lyrics in particular, saying he "regretted the track the day after the record was pressed". Marr has similarly voiced his cynicism, stating "I didn't think it was a particularly strong one....There was one stage where I was playing [What Difference Does It Make?] seven or eight gigs on the trot and I didn't like the feeling. I knew that this was not why I had got involved in a band in the first place." I don't see it at all

I think they didn't like the studio version ,the peel sessions version was better IMO.

This song makes everything seem so simple. As soon as I hear the “so what difference does it make” it feels like everything doesn’t matter, my problems, my ideas, my thoughts, and it’s weirdly calming that way. Helps me through tough times.

Every now and again, if I'm feeling a bit angsty (as happens to us all from time to time) I give this a blast. It disperses the pent up frustrations and sounds fantastic and makes feel 17 again all at once. An ear kissing, anger venting, nostalgia inducing tonic. Long live The Mozzer and Marr!

All men have secrets and here is mine So let it be known For we have been through hell and high tide I can surely rely on you And yet you start to recoil Heavy words are so lightly thrown But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you So, what difference does it make ? So, what difference does it make ? It makes none But now you have gone And you must be looking very old tonight The devil will find work for idle hands to do I stole and I lied, and why ? Because you asked me to ! But now you make me feel so ashamed Because I've only got two hands Well, I'm still fond of you So, what difference does it make ? Oh, what difference does it make ? It makes none But now you have gone And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight Oh, the devil will find work for idle hands to do I stole, and then I lied Just because you asked me to But now you know the truth about me You won't see me anymore Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh But no more apologies No more, no more apologies Oh, I'm too tired I'm so sick and tired And I'm feeling very sick and ill today But I'm still fond of you だけど、もう謝るのはやめてくれよ もうこれ以上、悪かっただなんて言わないでくれよ とにかく疲れたんだ、 疲れたし最悪の気分だ 本当に今日ばかりは最低最悪だよ でも君のことはまだ好きだよ Oh, my sacred one!

Looking back, I remember how the Smiths sound, look, and sensibility stood out from the rest of the popular music of the early 80s, even by Brit Pop/Rock standards they were just more unique in their own way. What a marriage of sound and lyric that could only have been realized by Marr, Morrissey, Rourke, and Joyce.
