What Difference Does It Make?" was released in 1984. The single version is taken from band's self-titled debut album The Smiths. A different version recorded for the John Peel Show on BBC Radio One is featured on the compilation album Hatful of Hollow.
Lyrics
All men have secrets and here is mine
So let it be known
For we have been through hell and high tide
I think I can rely on you...
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you
So, what difference does it make?
So, what difference does it make?
It makes none
But now you have gone
And you must be looking very old tonight
The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why?
Because you asked me to!
But now you make me feel so ashamed
Because I've only got two hands
Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
So, what difference does it make?
Oh, what difference does it make?
Oh, it makes none
But now you have gone
And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight
Oh, the devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole, and then I lied
Just because you asked me to
But now you know the truth about me
You won't see me anymore
Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
But no more apologies
No more, no more apologies
Oh, I'm too tired
I'm so sick and tired
And I'm feeling very sick and ill today
But I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
Oh, my sacred one...
Oh...

I can honestly say this song was a defining point in my childhood. It was ‘84 and I was 12. I was at my best friend Sandy’s house when all of a sudden I hear this guitar riff and Morrissey’s distinct voice coming out of her older sister Marie’s room. I immediately ask Sandy what Marie was playing and she shrugged so I went to Marie’s room and stood by her door as she was applying her eyeliner in the mirror and singing along. I saw the Hatful of Hollow album cover on her bed and asked her what she was listening to. She casually replied “The Smiths” and I made a mental note. That moment in Marie’s room changed me. The sound was unlike anything I had ever heard before. l literally felt hypnotized and I had a weird sense that I would never be the same again. Like all of a sudden I felt older and wiser. I eventually got the record a few weeks later and have been listening to it ever since. I’m 50 now and I’ll never forget the feeling of hearing The Smiths for the first time.

The Smiths in the 80s were what the Beatles were to the 60s. A fantastic group of lyricists and musicians that rose to fame quick and imploded just as quick. Update- jeez most of you people are so good at missing the point. I never said anything about comparisons or one band being better than the other or talent I simply said the smiths were basically the Beatles of the 80s because of cultural significance, their short time together and the infamous fighting that led to their breakup Good lord put your hero worship aside for a second.

So, what difference does it make? It makes none But now you have gone And you must be looking very old tonight The devil will find work for idle hands to do I stole and I lied, and why? Because you asked me to! But now you make me feel so ashamed Because I've only got two hands Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh So, what difference does it make? Oh, what difference does it make? Oh, it makes none But now you have gone And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight Oh, the devil will find work for idle hands to do I stole, and then I lied Just because you asked me to But now you know the truth about me You won't see me anymore Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh But no more apologies No more, no more apologies Oh, I'm too tired I'm so sick and tired And I'm feeling very sick and ill today But I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh Oh, my sacred one Oh

Too many more too name. But Marr did that amazing one of a kind sound on How Soon is Now. That alone trumps almost anything I have ever heard. And hell, there's probably ten songs by the Smiths I give 10 out of 10 and sound like nothing else except other Smiths songs. I think about Marr a lot actually, because I love that sound so much

I can't believe Morrissey and Marr don't like this song. I've always loved it, especially the falsetto at the end, the lyrics, and how hard hitting it is. This version is already great, but then the Peel/Hatful of Hollow version blows it away (in my opinion) and that was a live performance!
@panterxbeats
@panterxbeats 9 жыл бұрын
"Morrissey has stated on more than one occasion that "What Difference Does It Make?" is among his least favourite Smiths songs. He picked on the "rockist" influences and the "cliche" lyrics in particular, saying he "regretted the track the day after the record was pressed". Marr has similarly voiced his cynicism, stating "I didn't think it was a particularly strong one....There was one stage where I was playing [What Difference Does It Make?] seven or eight gigs on the trot and I didn't like the feeling. I knew that this was not why I had got involved in a band in the first place." I don't see it at all

Looking back, I remember how the Smiths sound, look, and sensibility stood out from the rest of the popular music of the early 80s, even by Brit Pop/Rock standards they were just more unique in their own way. What a marriage of sound and lyric that could only have been realized by Marr, Morrissey, Rourke, and Joyce.
