I remember in high school when this came out...there were people that were obsessed with Bon Jovi, people that were obsessed with Poison, and people who were obsessed with George Michael. Always been one of my favourite Smiths songs ever since I was 11yrs old and heard those infectious guitar riffs of this song bellowing from the vinyl record player coming from my older brothers bedroom in 1987. I loved it instantly, the very next day I went into primary school and asked if I could start guitar lessons. Had my first guitar lesson that day and there’s rarely been a day ever since that I’ve not picked up a guitar and played whether it be for 5mins or 5hours. I remember that day like it was last week and I’m so glad it happened as has given me the beauty and wonderful skills of being a musician/producer/engineer, playing guitar, keyboards, piano, vocals, drums, percussion, saxophone and others. It’s given me various jobs in the music industry over the last 30yrs, sound technician, road crew, guitar technician. And playing in my band for years, guitars, lead vocals and keys, songwriting and recording and producing all our own songs and the amazing feelings you get playing live playing our own songs in an immense feeling when on stage that you don’t really get from anything else in life. Basically it’s given me a huge variety of skills in music and many other areas in life. Plus a great knowledge and live of music. The musical influence from Johnny Marr’s beautiful individual melodic guitar playing unlike any other guitarist and the understanding and depths of writing meaningful lyrics from the amazing lyrics and vocals of Morrissey, it’s shaped my life into what it is today for that I am eternally grateful and so happy I fell in love with the songs of The Smiths at such a young age. And now my son is a young adult and also loves The Smiths and singing and playing guitar is a truly wonderful thing to be able to pass on. And living Manchester my son, myself, my mates from my band all try and go to The Smiths Disco every month at The Star and Garter in Manchester City centre for great nights out singing and dancing all night to The Smiths.
