Lyrics
Well I wonder
Do you hear me when you sleep ?
I hoarsely cry
Oh...
Well I wonder
Do you see me when we pass ?
I half die...
Oh...
Please keep me in mind
Please keep me in mind
Gasping - but somehow still alive
This is the fierce last stand of all I am
Gasping - dying - but somehow still alive
This is the final stand of all I am
Please keep me in mind
Well I wonder
Well I wonder
Please keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
Keep me in mind

the phrase "keep me in mind" is just so powerful. because no one ever asks, "remember me" or "think of me in the darkest hour of the night when you don't know who to go to". all everyone ever wants is to be "kept in mind", because to someone who's stopped expecting to be someone's first choice, just being kept at the back at someone's mind, that shows that you're not nothing, and can be lifesaving.

@Sasha - So true. Also that hope that she completely hasn’t forgotten ‘you’…. Although it’s been over six painful long years… that hope of “keep me in mind” and “gasping-dying”; breathing hurts ; sooo much when ‘you’ never had closure… it hurts so much….

My best friend was re-diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia last year, he battled valiantly for 7 months, on the last day he was alive, I found this song on a instagram video. The phrase “ this is my final stand of all I am” caught my attention as I knew my friend was on his final stand, only a miracle would be able to save him at that point. 40- 60 mins after finding the song we got the news he had passed away. I went back and listened closely to the song and it’s almost as if it was a message from him, I’ve never heard this song before that day….

This song, just shows how the smiths have mastered the emotion of desperation, in both sound and words. That “please keep me in mind” is just a request, it’s a plea. The speaker is begging to not only be seen, but to be spoken to, to simply be noticed during a dark lonely period in his life. Amazing.

WIW is an under-appreciated (and oft-overlooked) classic. In my humble opinion, this is without doubt one of the best songs in the entire Smiths catalogue. Morrissey's vocal and lyric is heart-wrenching, and delivered with both heavy emotion AND restraint- a very difficult thing to achieve. Andy Rourke's bass part is astonishing- I get the feeling that his main bass riff is central to the song's overall existence. Moerover, it's what Rourke DOESN'T play that makes his part so memorable.- the beginning of the first verse being a great example. The 'Meat Is Murder' LP was recorded in late 1984 (and released in Feb '85)- co-writer, guitarist and producer Johnny Marr was only 21 years old, and his production is nigh-on perfect. The mix is broad, crisp and immediate- hats off to both Marr and Stephen Street, who- as far as I can tell,- mixed the album together, with some input from the other band members. Everything sounds great, with the slight exception of the snare drum- to my ears, at least. Perhaps it could come down in level by 3 or 4 db, and perhaps tuned slightly higher for a more lively 'ring'. It might've added some brightness overall, but it's a minor complaint. The extensive use of acoustic guitars on this song really makes it stand out on 'Meat Is Murder'. The subtle use of volume swells on the electric guitar parts, deliberately back in the mix, underneath the acoustics- is a genius move. The ambience track, the rain... just brilliant. Regarding the ending, personally I could listen to that outro for another minute and a half or so, with a slow grand fade- in much the same vein as 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others'... yet I admit, I love it just as it is! They just don't make records like this anymore! DJH ; )

This always manages to remind me of a woman I had a massive crush on in my mid 20s who I went on a few dates with and whom I still keep in very superficial touch with, as we have lots of mutual friends. So much feeling wasted on someone who will never care about it.

I fist listened to this song when I was 21, now I'm on my early 30's. This takes me back with this girl, she was the girl, this was our song , we where so special to each other , I was still a teen and just fucked it up, stubborn and selfish, but now I think too much of her, she's still the girl in my dreams and memories , if you remember me Rini, forgive me, I still think of you whenever The Smiths comes out, I still keep you in mind .

I will never forget the first time I heard this song - it was 1985, I was at university and we were on a road trip cruising through into a beautiful part of NZ called Leigh as the shadows were starting to appear and getting longer, due to the sun was going down in the early evening. We were listening to the new Smiths, Meat is Murder album and this song was playing! Had to rewind it again on the car cassette deck! I was 20 yrs old and have never forgotten that moment!
