Different fuels create different types of fires, and each one needs to be extinguished using a specific strategy. Do you know which class of extinguisher is needed for different fires?

Greetings SciShow. For the past 50 years or so fire has been my business. I was in the fire extinguisher/fixed fire system field primarily as an instructor. Later I was employed as a full time firefighter and currently as a hazard tree faller for Cal Fire. This video is one of the best I have seen. It had a couple of minor mistakes but overall it was good for the average person. I do believe you should have said the ABC multi purpose dry chemical is the extinguisher everyone should have in the home. The other types are only for industrial/commercial use. Keep up the good work!

torrqueable for a start the chemistry is wrong. EG all you need is ANY reducing agent for a fire and oxygen is just one of them. Flourine would do in many cases and magnesium will even burn in carbon dioxide. For fat/oil fires you ALLWAYS smother them and in a kitchen that is best done with a fire blanket or a heavy damp towel and Red Adaire demonstrated how that can be done with water in the case of a very large fire - and you get trained how to do that if you ever work on an oil rig in the UK. There is no fire tetrahedron it's a fire triangle all you need is heat fuel and a reducing agent and you have fire. So you are an FFT are you? LMAO where did you get your certificate? A cornflakes packet?

I worked in warehouse for a few years and learned this as part of the safety courses issued by the company. It makers perfect sense in a warehouse environment as we may experience each one of these issues and because of the type of environment it is makes it extremely practical to keep and store an alphabetical arrangement of the different types of extinguishers. I ain't got time for that at my house.

In Scouts, a couple guys made a candle using a can and some wax. They couldn't put it out, so I suggested using some dishwater. They poured some water on it, and immediately a 15 foot high column of flame erupted from the candle. It singed the eyebrows of the guy holding the candle on the stick, reduced the stick several inches, and could be seen on the other side of a small hill. Burning wax and water don't mix.

If you have a kitchen (cooling oil or grease) fire and no extinguisher, any one of the following would also help: the matching lid of the pan (to choke off the oxygen supply of the fire) and wet leafy veggies (the water content reduces heat; while the plant material acts like a lid, trapping the burning oil droplets from flying out)
@ariccastro
@ariccastro 8 жыл бұрын
The dry powder coats everything when you use an extinguisher. Some of the extinguishers use a colorful powder that shows up on clothing. Shutting down the power is usually the best for class C fires, then you're left fighting the material that is burning from the electrical fire. That's why most departments try to shut off the utilities to a building before engaging in fire attacks

Could you guys do a SciShow on what fire actually is? I've never been able to get a description that makes sense to me from anyone. Specifically, is fire a form of matter? Is it a substance that exists as either a gas, solid, or liquid? I'm told no. However, at times it behaves like a gas. Large fires can even flow down staircases like liquid. What the hell?

For a grease fire in a pot or pan, if the cover is in reach, wouldn't it be best to shut off the stove and place the cover on the pot (with an oven mitt if necessary). If the cover is not close by, then a completely wet (but not dripping) towel can be used to cover the pot.

It should be noted that a Class B (U.S.) extinguisher may also be used for oil/grease fires. The Class K extinguishers were made for larger oil/grease fires such as in industrial kitchens. But for smaller kitchen fires, both Class B and Class K extinguishers will work. Just be careful to not "splash" the oil around with the usually higher pressure exhaust of the typical Class ABC extinguisher.

Apparently +SciShow hasn't seen many pan fires, because the best way to put them out is just to drop a lid on the top of the pan. You would only need a fire extinguisher if somehow the fire spread to areas outside of your worktop/cooking surface.

I had an AK fire in my oven once. I had forgotten that there was a plastic container in the oven and turned it on to preheat. A few minutes later I noticed smoke coming from the kitchen. I opened the oven and the added oxygen make the fire flash and almost took my facial hair off. I quickly closed the oven, turned it off, reopened it to splash in a pot of water and slammed the oven closed. It did put it out, and I spent the next week cleaning soot.

First choice when the bacon is on fire and like fires may be to put a lid over the frying pan or the pot. Always know where a lid of the proper size is. A fire blanket is also good if you know how to use it. In a few cases it may be possible to put out a fire in oil or gasoline with water, but it is more like a party trick than practical. The fire has to be in an open barrel or pot and then you cover the space above the burning fluid with water mist. A bucket pump can do the trick. Maybe.

The "dry powder" extinguishers can be used on kitchen fires however they should be sprayed upwards to let the powder settle on the burning oil. Another types of extinguisher that can be used on burning oil in a kitchen uses damp oatmeal. Even with these it's important to not spray them at the oil or it'll likely spread. A fire blanket is a good thing to have on hand in the kitchen but even that does need to be used with care. Everyone in a household should know what to do in a fire and how to use basic fire fighting gear. Alkali metal fires need an extinguisher that contains glass beads. The glass melts to exclude oxygen and water.

I Germany the classes are: A: Solid ordinary fuels B: Liquid fuels C: Gasses D: Metal E: electrical appliances (there is no specific E-Type fire extinguisher, the are usually labelled CO2-Extinguishers) F: fat/oil/grease Also the best way to put out a fire in a pot in your kitchen is by putting a lid on top, if you don't have anything fitting around you can also use a thick blanket if you use it quickly. Some extinguishers meant for burning oil are not really the best way to put out burning oil as they might still spray around the oil creating a huge fireball. At my local fire department we tested some cheap ones some time ago and I'd recommend none of them.

In the UK we now have water extinguishers for electrical fires. CO2 and Dust are being phased out. Water Mist Extinguisher (‘Dry’ Water Mist) Water Mist Extinguisher Signal Red on a White Background Best For The first broad spectrum extinguisher to tackle A, B, C rated risks as well as fats and deep fat fryers (Class F). Models with dielectric test to 35k Volt can be safely used on electrical fires (up to 1000 Volt) if a safety distance of 1m is adhered to, as their mist (de-ionised water) does not conduct electricity and the extinguisher does not normally form puddles, which could conduct electricity. The E-Series extinguishers also contain only de-ionised water which cannot carry any electric current. How to Use Point the jet at the base of the flames and keep it moving across the area of the fire. If your bacon, or anything in a skillet or pot on your stovetop for that matter, bursts into flame... don't grab a fire extinguisher at all. Grab a cooking mitt or wrap your hand in a kitchen towel or similar, grab the handle of the skillet or pot, and remove it from the heat (while turning the stove off). Either cover it with a cover made for the skillet/pot, or take it outside. You only really have a serious problem if the fire has spread to other flammable surfaces in your kitchen. Fires burn out when they run out of fuel. Just make sure it can't spread, and probably take it outside so the soot and smoke doesn't cause problems inside or, preferrably, just cover it and it will starve itself of oxygen nearly instantly.

Could you cover clean agents, such as what used to consist of Halon-type extinguishers? I'd like to hear a more detailed overview of these agents, such as Halotron, Inergen and Novec 1230.

I don't quite see the difference between B and K fires. Both are about flammable liquids or gases which either don't care about water or simply are spread around more by it, right? Or am I missing something?

Class K are liquids that resist water like oil. Class B are liquids that don't resist water like gasoline.

This was mentioned in the video. Water doesn't work on anything bar A, and K fires pretty much ignore dry chem's foam blanket. Firefighting is more science than manpower, that's why we spend so much time in a classroom compared to on the field.

the fuel in the kitchen fire is usually contained in heavily insulated containers and the containers are relatively deep so the fuel maintains the high heat and combustion level so that a regular ABC extinguisher isn't effective. the were Chem k extinguishers work with the hood systems to create a thick layer that separates the fuel from the oxygen.

Where does Halon gas exterminators fit into the scales of things?
@oogieboogie232
@oogieboogie232 8 жыл бұрын
Its different, though there are handeld extinguishers. In terms of the tetrahedron described, Halon and similar agents circumvent the chemical reaction (oxidation) with its own reaction, using up the hydrogen the oxygen would have bound with.

halon is used in data centres for electrical fires... trouble is it is very expensive. went through incuction for a 2 floor data centre and the cost of the gas was $80,000 AUD... then he goes on to say "dont worry about the cost, if there is a fire and you think you need to pull the gas ,just do it".. lol supposedly it takes away enough oxygen to put out the fire but enough so if you are caught in it you wont die... not going to try that one!!

Only really for large electronic and electrical systems for a few reasons. First they're good because they don't damage surrounding systems and disapate completely so repair and restart time is shortened. Second, they will put out basically anything and are inert. But they are the most damaging chemicals in the ozone layer and they are covered by the Montreal Protocol. So you need a good reason to use one.

From my current knowledge, early Halon extinguishers are completely banned from civilian use due to the Montreal protocol as they contain tetrachloromethane and methyl bromide which both deplete the ozone layer. Current usage in the UK is by the ministry of defence, police and I think the underground international rail systems. Current Halon extinguishers use bromotrifluoromethane. Problem is once in use against the fire, in this case, solids or liquids, hydrogen chloride gas is produced.

also if theres an electrical fire in an area with sensitive electronics, like a server room, they always use CO2 fire extinguishers because dry chemical can damage the electronics even more

I am really surprised how approach for extinguishing fires in USA differs from that in Poland where I live. For example for K fire type (marked as F in Poland) we use potassium acetate foam, and for A type fire we use NaHCO3 or KHCO3 powder.
@Fredengle
@Fredengle Жыл бұрын
that would be strange as what you mention are baking soda and purple k both agents are only rated for liquids and l electrical fires!! they are not rated for class a fires as they do not work well on paper fires! foam would be dangerous on a Class F fire because it has a high water content!

Just have a metal pan cover a bit larger than the pan lying near you, you could probably save the bacon a lot better by quickly covering the pan with it, and plus using an extingusher on a small fire might just kill the bacon.
