Oh my gosh! My puppy could be Keilani's twin - including the energetic, playful bouncing and pulling!!! She has pulled me off my feet several times - and yes, she is in her teenage phase and very strong. We've been practicing walking in the back yard but she still gets so excited suddenly by anything - a squirrel, the sound of a motorcycle, kids in the next yard, you name it! I bought one of the gentle leaders and a leash from you and I really appreciate the training tips! I used a halti with my previous lab but didn't like it because it seemed to hurt his nose - it pinched when he pulled. I've been nervous to try the gentle leader for that reason. I think we'll start with it today, hopefully we can use it in the back yard and progress slowly towards the wider world.

These gentle leaders look great. Thanks for another helpful clip. Eps has heaps of energy after working with me all day. Her playtime, sniffaris and exciting places walks are times when she can struggle with leaning heavily into the lead. We keep working on learning more gentle handler cueing skills. This could be a useful addition for helping handler reduce unwanted heavy handedness (I feel I often hold lead too tight, contributing to the problem). Thank you. 😎🐾

Prong collars, choke chains, martingales and other collars that tighten around the neck are dangerous, even for puppies. Using those won't help your dog learn how to walk properly, they will just pull and get hurt from the collar, it isn't fixing anything. Make sure you train your dog to heel off leash inside of your house before you try to teach them to heel on a leash. Training an off leash heel indoors and in your back yard is VERY easy. You also have to train the heeling position too. Stand by a wall or fence with just enough room for your dog between you and the wall. Start with your dog in front of you, facing you, then lure them into the space, then make them to a tight circle by luring. When they get into the position, give them a lot of treats and praise for staying in the position. You can't expect a dog to heel on a leash, outside, in an unfamiliar area if they don't even know what heel is. Make sure you always take small steps to work your way up to the behavior you want. Remember, dogs are only as smart as toddlers.

A few observations from someone who has shot video for a number of dog trainers. The single most effective training tool for dogs is food. Dogs, with few exceptions, are food motivated. Carry treats in your pocket and they'll do anything you want them to. They know you have what they like, and they want it. This isn't to say this type of leash can't be effective, but it has to be in the right hands. Most people, even though they may have good intentions, will have a heavier hand in terms of applying pressure and one little that is a bit too hard... well, that's a tough lesson to learn. I would suggest a much safer route would be a harness (Buddy Belts come to mind) rather than anything around a neck, combined with treats, and you'll have a well behaved dog. My two cents.

Good info. I think one important thing you didn't mention is that the gentle leader isn't designed to be yanked on or popped like a regular collar or other tools. Joel Beckman demonstrates and uses this tool incorrectly on almost every one of his videos.

prong user balanced trainers also love to trash the gentle leader because apparently it's terrible for the neck when it's yanked, and yet they are completely OK yanking poor dogs with prong collars on... why is it so hard to let this whole popping and yanking business go?

YESSSS! The Halti (basically a gentle leader) SAVED MY SANITY lol I still use it when we need a “tune up” or my puppy needs more control in the house when someone is coming over. It’s simply magical.

Eps really doesn't enjoy the halti though it does reduce forward momentum and can help head direction. Her tiny head means this brand of leader restricts her mouth opening fully (always set loose enough to pant and drink but any looser and she is quick and smart at taking it off). I wonder if she would just take the gentle leader off too.

My dog is absolutely bonkers. I can teach her anything indoors, but I've never been able to get her to not lock onto distractions like a heat seeking missile, not even with ham. This looks very interesting, but the video doesn't give me much confidence. Either this dog was already really good at it or you are an amazeballs trainer (probably the latter). I'm not an amazeballs trainer, so what I'd like to see is the Gentle Leader in action on a dog that isn't getting it and what to do when that happens.

Yea it can but it depends on how much pressure you put when she is pulling. But in my experience if the leader is well tight than it won’t move too much around

@eddiesaviarycom-fu9me if it wasn't in the right place to begin with, I'd have tried to figure it out and do adjustments. And i did! Made no difference. Kept slipping. In hindsight, a harness would have been better. Doesn't matter know. .that beautiful girl has since passed. RIP Steffi. No she wasn't short nose. Collie/Terrier cross according to the spca.

What age is acceptable to start using the gentle leader? I have a 4 month old mcnab/border collie who thinks it’s his job to take us for walks. I’ve tried diverting his attention away from the leash but every single walk we go on he grabs the leash and starts walking with it or he wants to play tug of war the whole time. I’m thinking this would be the solution for training him on a leash.

Tried one with a Chow mix. Tore his face up trying to get it off. Prong collar works best in my experience and based on my trainers advice. Got a 125lbs Female Cane Corso that was an adult when I got her and didn't have a collar. A month later she walks great and is being trained as a service dog.
