Only around 56 SNES games, a few Atari 2600 games, a bunch of PS1/PS2, games only one N64 game, and a Game Shark that I forgot that I actually had all along, a small collection if you compare it for most collectors, but I'm not really into game collecting, just wanting to play mine that I used to have during the 90s... Only, other games got added along the way, I didn't even know those did existed at the time and a bunch of there were great games in the end.... Goes without saying that I also got an SNES console and a PS2...

25 years. This year marks 25 years since I bought my SNES-- the first console that I ever bought with my own money. Despite the console's age, as this video shows, many of its games still hold up remarkably well to this day. I still remember the games I bought for it at the time: F-Zero, Final Fantasy II, and ActRaiser-- in addition to Super Mario World, which came with the console. It wasn't long before I bought John Madden Football (so, so bad), Pilotwings, and Final Fight... and that was just the start. I was very much a Nintendo fan back then, up until Sony stole me away with the PlayStation in 1995. I have tons of memories... from playing and beating a Final Fantasy game for the first time, to deciding to buy the last copy of Street Fighter II from Kay-Bee Toys (and snapping my SNES controller in half when I couldn't beat M. Bison... which was DUMB of me), to the amazement I felt when playing Donkey Kong Country for the first time. The SNES era was my early adult life, and it was a great time. Thanks so much for putting this episode together. I loved every minute... and you continue to make some of the best episodic content out there. It takes a lot of effort and coordination, and it always shows.

Christmas, 1991, I was a Genesis Fanboy. My younger brother got the SNES and Actraiser. The upon seeing the game in action, I literally wept. The graphics, the music, they just made my Genesis seem like a ColecoVision! I had gotten Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and my brother rented Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts; Game over Genesis! And then there was Castlevania IV.....never looked back after seeing that game! Sold my Genesis and 25 games to my older brother and bought a SNES and FFII!

When it comes to Mega Man, fans typically aren't big on 7 because the larger sprites meant for less maneuvering room, less reaction time to enemies and obstacles coming on screen, and Mega Man's movements feeling different to compensate for it. I like the game fine, it's not the best but I appreciate what it was going for and it's still fun to play. X on the other hand ranks in my favorite games on the SNES. I like the more mature art direction and story, I like the mix of classic gameplay with new abilities and collectibles, and I love that the boss weapons all feel useful. Plus the music is some of the best on the SNES, I would honestly put that soundtrack on par with even Squaresoft's 16-bit efforts.

I picked up all 5 SNES Megaman games from Japan recently, and Rockman and Forte is probably my favourite just to pick up and play: the music is amazing (like the soundtrack to a great summer vacation or something), the graphics blew me away when I first played the ROM, and it has battery backup and tight control. The game IS pretty hard but it has an upgrade system and rewards replay. I feel like a lot of modern gamers don't have the patience for it, because the platforming's tricky and those robot masters are absolute motherf****rs! Burner Man is still the coolest robot master design ever, and even their little intro animations are incredibly impressive for SNES! It's also cool how each character has their pros+cons: Rock has stronger shots, much better support items and better defense low to the ground, but lousy mobility (no Rush Coil/Jet); Forte can shoot in 7 directions and totally dominates aerial mobility, but has a weak buster and no recovery/shield options. This is a truly great game that gets unfairly s*** upon for changing the formula a bit, but I love the whole vibe of this game. I'd choose X second because I remember how to get all the items so it makes a good game to beat in one setting. The 3 X games are all pretty comparable and all very good if you don't mind picking up the reasonably-priced Japanese versions of the last 2. MM7 though...they tried some cool stuff to add replay and it keeps classic stuff like the Rush abilities, but it's like TJ said: the movement is horribly stiff, like you're always JUST BARELY able to make jumps. In general this feels like Megaman's "awkward teens" (I love MM8, BTW) because he's so damn awkward and VULNERABLE: you take elemental damage from fire and ice, there's s*** like Freeze Man and Slash Man's stuns, your invulnerability period is noticeably shorter, and worst of all: your charged shot does a measly 2 damage! This all makes it pretty hard for me to really enjoy this one like the rest of them...really, I don't know why people seem to give this game a pass on its handicap-based difficulty yet slag on R+F for having challenging platforming and boss fights that at least control well.

You right, man. People didnt realize that the "bigger" sprites in in fact showing these games are running in a low resolution mode of the console, like most SNES games to run smooth, cause it means less work for the processor. like I think 80% of SNES games. So most of the games are slow paced. Not means they're not enjoyying they are just not my type.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but the reason the cartridges were altered to defeat the whole cartridge lock was due to a mechanical failure that affected a decent number of SNESes. Early SNESes had a plastic piece that would move with the power switch, locking the game in place, and making it near impossible for the cartridge to pop out of the console. The intention was definitely a good one, but the plastic inside the console could sometimes break, leaving the switch in a "locked" state. While this seems minor, it was a huge problem due to how the lock worked. When you slide the switch forward, the mechanism actually slides to a somewhat offset angle, making it extremely difficult for the switch to just slide back into place unless you applied an even amount of pressure along the lock tab. Also, the space between the chassis and the cartridge was very narrow, and the lock was fairly deep, which just added to the problem. As mentioned before, the new SNESes had the lock tab removed completely, but Nintendo redesigned the carts so that anyone who had an older, working SNES with the lock tab could play games without worry that their carts would get stuck inside. Well, at least the newer ones.
@Atlink
@Atlink 8 жыл бұрын
Also, it took me many years to finally discover why the carts had been altered. It was probably published in some gaming magazine somewhere, but I rarely had those. Just wanted to clarify in case anyone was curious about the lock.
@GameSack
@GameSack 8 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the Super Famicom work the same way? I opened that up and to my recollection pretty much all of the internal parts were directly interchangeable with early SNES units. They never changed the design of the Super Famicom carts.
@Atlink
@Atlink 8 жыл бұрын
Quite possible, yes. It might have been that the failure rate was lower in Japan due to the children there probably not being as abusive as us silly Americans are to our consoles. I just remember reading that that was the reason why. Doing a bit more reading into it, it looks as though only the first year made US SNESes had the lock tab. Apparently this was in place due to a pico fuse that could be blown (rendering the system a brick) if the game pak was removed while the power was on. However, Nintendo was getting a bunch of customer support calls about stuck cartridges. In a move to not only remove the lock (and some other minor components), but save money as well, they made another revision to the system, added a sticker below the power switch, and began using the new style cartridges. That's what I'm gleaning from a number of blogs and other tech documents that I'm seeing. Again, I couldn't tell you why the PAL or NTSC-J versions didn't remove these features. I guess NOA was just picky like that.
@GameSack
@GameSack 8 жыл бұрын
Atlink I have one SNES that had that sticker. I removed it and washed away the residue. Those are the one-chip models and actually have crisper RGB output since they don't have a low-pass filter on the video like most early SNES units do, rendering them pretty blurry. Sadly these units can do odd things. I wasn't able to record Chrono Trigger with it because the sync would spazz out whenever a dialog box came on screen.
@Atlink
@Atlink 8 жыл бұрын
I too have one of those units, but the problem is a little deeper for me, as my image presents a faint yellow-brown column of pixels around halfway across the screen. But I believe it's a physical hardware issue. Possibly a cold solder joint or something. If there's an image on the screen, the line isn't noticeable at all. If there is blackness, however, it's very noticeable. I'm just happy my SNES isn't yellowed and works.

Joe! I agree 100%...SNES in my opinion Nintendo's best system. I grew up collecting Nintendo systems and felt like a traitor when I bought a Dreamcast (only because Castlevania was coming out at that time for the Dreamcast) but man...N64 was a huge disappointment for me and so was the Wii...Wii U is what the regular Wii should've been. I did enjoy the GameCube a lot though :)

Just started watching, but figured I'd butt in with an FYI: "If you want anything other than composite video with it, then you can go to hell." Officially, yes, but the successful Kickstarter for SNES and Genesis component cables literally just bore fruit like, two weeks ago, and I picked up some SNES component cables last week for $50 from them... and believe it or not, they work perfectly! Crystal clear 240p display. I highly recommend it -- it's literally just component-out cables that hook up to the SNES video-out like any other SNES cables. Don't know what sort of magic they used, but whatever it is, it looks beautiful!
@GameSack

It's possible your SNES Jr could have been modded for RGB. I've never heard of any coming stock with RGB though. The HD Retrovision guys have a chip in their cable which transcodes component from RGB.
