Winter came, and the snow is falling. I'm exploring the old water saw mill and the barn, and making coffee from snow on the Trangia Triangle.

Not many things in my life are "certain" - but I am always certain I am going to enjoy the next few minutes when I see a new Erik movie appear in my notifications. Quality, consistency, care - a very "old school" ethic to creating your stories. I appreciate it very much Erik.

@@MirandaBrumbaugh Not sure if you are trolling or genuinely curious. I'll assume genuine until you show otherwise. So I will answer your question. Never met Erik but sitting drinking a hot coffee next to a frozen bay with him would be high on my list of "happy moments". I really appreciate the quality of the content Erik creates. I have some understanding of HOW MUCH work goes into creating ten minutes of visual mastery. When I see 'world class' I like to tell the person creating that quality that I appreciate THAT quality. It is rare enough, those creating great stuff should be encouraged to keep creating at that level. Do I want to "be" Erik? No, but I would like to create with as much skill and discipline and consistency as Erik does.

6:20 barn situation: Erik brought food, coffee, metal fire box, fuel in the backpack. So let's imagine the barn disappears. He could be sitting on a small chair (barn door) and have a small tarp over his head, thats everything that barn was used for: some sort of chair and shelter from snow flakes.

Beautifully observed, filmed and recorded as ever Erik. I'm often struck by how many empty/abandoned properties you seem to have in the region.
@northernswedenstories1028
@northernswedenstories1028 3 жыл бұрын
That's only scratching the surface. The north is full of abandoned stuff like this. Sometimes you even wonder if someone still lives in it and then you go inside and realise it's not the case. Unfortunately the north has an ever decreasing population outside of the larger towns and cities. Rural life is hard and most young people will move south as soon as they get the chance. I think Erik lives in a slightly more populated area up near Luleå but if you explore some of the more inland regions of the north you can truly see much desolation.
@therealronswanson
@therealronswanson 3 жыл бұрын
if you combine two of the northernmost parts of Sweden, Jämtland and Lappland they are about as big as England in size. But in those 130.000 km2 theres only a little over 200.000 inhabitants.

@@northernswedenstories1028 this applies to more than just the Nordics, but I've always wondered how modern Europeans feel about those who left. We all joke the Americans who claim to be Irish first after 200 years are lame, while my grandparents kept in touch with Poland, but I've never heard much from the Nordic perspective. Found out while doing a bit of traveling that the prairies and PNW areas of America still have some strong Norwegian and Swedish communities, eating lutefisk and using the languages still. Declining with newer generations, but existing nonetheless.
@northernswedenstories1028
@northernswedenstories1028 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevend776 very true. I don't actually know. But now you have me wanting to research the topic! Like you said, very many Swedes migrated to America in the 1800s I believe. Sweden was a very poor country at the time and the land was hard to work. However times have changed of course. But now I wonder how the migrated Swedes offspring view Sweden, and how Swedes view those who left. I am not a homegrown swede so I don't really know. I migrated here from Scotland

Erik you show the old ways in a very positive light as they should be shown. They will be needed again one day. I wonder, are the sawmill and barn owned by someone or some family who you know? Or perhaps your family? Or, are they abandoned? You have an extensive knowledge of the regions around where you live, and many of the interesting places and structures. You have the artist's eye, capturing the details of the experience in a way that puts the viewer in the moment. I was especially struck by the red berries hanging on the tree branches with snow on them, framed by that old window, and the leafless bushes in front of one of the old buildings with the snow clinging to them. Well done sir. These are the kinds of memories I have of my youth growing up in a rural New England farming community. Thank you for another subtly powerful post. I recently supported you via paypal, and expect to do so again soon. Cheers.

@@bonpecheur4565 Whilst almost everywhere has a smaller land mass than Canada, I'm not really sure you can call Sweden "small". I travelled from Stockholm in the south, to Abisko in the very far north once and it took almost exactly 24 hours. Sweden isn't large in terms of area, but from south to north, it does cover roughly 15 degrees of latitude. It's southernmost point is on the same latitude as Prince Rupert, BC and it's northernmost point is on roughly the same latitude as Tuktoyaktuk, in the Northwest Territories.
