There is nothing wrong with reinterpreting fairy tales or other stories but it must be done with intelligence and taste. Disney studios have lost both these days.

People appreciated Snow White in 1937 the same way they appreciated Star Wars in 1977. Both were optimistic fantasy movies that helped people escape the realities of the hard times they came out.

Also... just one example... one could drawer parallels with HM the late Queen Elizabeth; she was 11 when Snow White came out, she was dreaming about true love AND dreamimg about the leader she could be. She went on to reign for over 70 years, with her Prince Consort by her side (when he wasn't several paces behind). But most importantly, they lived happily ever after. Who is anyone to criticise what makes another person happy. I'll stop now 😊

That's a lovely thought. Even though I am American I definitely appreciate and have respect for how hard working the Queen was, as well as the fact that she insisted on marrying someone she actually loved.

Corporate Disney thrives on drama, maltreatment, controversy, polarization, horrendous miscastings, greed, minimal effort, performative activism and insulting their audiences intelligence, judging the past through a self righteous modernist perspective is redundant, “Snow White and the seven dwarfs” 1937 is one of the very few animated classics Disney which didn’t produce a direct to DVD sequel.

The entire point of the original story seems to be lost on present day Disney. Apparently, there is no need to return to source material (classic literature) for these people, because there is a movie that they themselves have already made. These ill conceived, and inbred attempts at updating are part of the overall effects of illiteracy in the modern world; yes, they can probably read, but they choose not to, electing to replace books with TV and movies, which leads to brain rot, as the imagination shuts down over time due to a lack of use. Poor Rachel Zegler is a victim of this modern myopathy...nothing that happened in history before the year of her birth is of any relevance to her. Talk about weird.

Thanks very much! I mentioned in the video that I really liked Cinderella 2015, but I will say that Glenn Close absolutely threw herself into the role of Cruella DeVille and made that movie fun. Despite some flaws I really respect the creative ambition of Alice in Wonderland 2010. I haven't seen The Jungle Book 2016, but I will now give it a try because you said you liked it. I must admit, however, that I stopped watching Aladdin 2019 and Christopher Robin partway through. The Aladdin remake (for me, anyway) was hopelessly damaged by forcing Will Smith to imitate Robin Williams despite the fact that he is a superb comic actor in is own right. And I found Christopher Robin just kind of a downer. But I am always open to changing my mind so feel free to tell me why you liked these films.

I’m going to address the elephant in the room: skin colour. This is one of the few cases where race-swapping bothers me, because it’s so obvious that Disney hired a brown-skinned actress to play a character who, as her name suggests, is white as snow, only to create attention and publicity to the film. Snow White, or at least the version from the Brothers’ Grimm that Disney adapted the movie from, is rooted in German and northern European roots, and thus the audience knows that the characters would be white, just as folk tales from Nigeria would historically belong to black people. It’s not that race-swapping can’t be done tastefully, because it can and it has been done (even Disney has done it with films like “Princess and the frog”). But everything about this new Snow White reeks of corporatism, nothing is being done out of the need to tell a story or say something meaningful. It just comes across as if corporate Disney changed the skin colour to cater to the growing demand of audiences for more representation (which is good), but in the easiest, safest way possible. They only made skin-deep (literally) changes to an already established character with decidedly Caucasian roots, but without making any creative changes to the setting and the lore to justify it. It’s just so lazy. Diversity in the media is important, but the way this movie delivers it is cynically capitalist.

It's depressing that it's such a hot topic. If Disney doesn't want to tell the story of Snow White, tell a different one! There are so many wonderful stories from around the world. It's very telling that Disney and other studios don't believe in those stories enough to give them a chance.

I think all the Zegler defenders really need to understand the core of the criticism against her. Apart from criticizing casting someone with a darker skin tone for a character who was literally named for having "Skin white as snow", thus leading to huge glaring inconsistencies, there is more, but I will briefly address the "race" thing, even though it's more specifically a skin tone thing, not necessarily ethnicity, though they are often tied. In the original fairy tale, Snow White's mom looked at a black wooden window sill while knitting in the winter. After accidentally pricking her finger, a drop of blood fell on to the snow, and she liked the colour contrast so much, she wished for a daughter that had the black of the wood of the window frame, the redness of blood, and the white of Winter's snow. Her wish was granted, hense why Snow White must have white skin. It's the origin of her name, which is likely a nickname, as we do not get Snow White's actual name. Now for the main reason for criticism of Zegler that her defenders need to understand. She is being really smug and arrogant about things, especially when she bashes the 1937 movie in favour of her 2025 version. She fails to realize that that type of talk is bad marketing. Her defenders point to how young she is, but she has been an adult now for 5 years (2 at the time of her interview, 4 at the time of her Palestine comments). the "young and dumb" excuse only goes so far, and at some point she needs to realize that during the pre phase of a movie, you don't act like that. Mila Kunis might try to be funny before her movies, where she plays comedic or sarcastic characters, but she never goes after things the fans like, because she knows what will happen if she starts going after people like that. And I will bet you dollars to donuts that she would never attack a Russian actor or actress if she was costaring with one. I use Mila as an example, because like me, she is Ukrainian, which, as I think we all know, is in the middle of a war against the invading Russians. As far as we know, Mila Kunis does not have a Russian costar for her projects at the moment, but, I'll bet you if she did, she would tread with some decorum when discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's about knowing when to speak your mind vs. not, and the time between a movie's announcement and the film's release, as well as your casting announcement and the films release, is not the time to start tackling political issues. I'd say the same for a pro Trump individual as well, and I do feel the same way about Gal Gadot, while she is from Israel itself, she maybe needs to minimize the political stuff until after the film is already out. Make of that what you will, but what I layed out in this novel is the reason Rachel Zegler is getting the criticism, and deserves it, I don't care what her defenders say. Being young and dumb is not always an excuse, especially when you make the same mistake over and over and over again. Once is fine, but then apolojize right away, admit you messed up, and then learn from it. Rachel just needs to do that to address all the valid criticisms. That is all.

I agree with you. "Cinderella" (2015) was respectful of the original fairy-tale. All the other reboots have been $$$ grabs. Dinklage gets upset, Disney caves, RZ shows no understanding of the value of movies from the past, and the company is left with a reboot nobody asked for or wanted to begin with. The Dwarfs offer shelter and friendship to Snow White after a traumatizing experience. How is this offensive? Snow White herself is resilient and self-reliant. She knows how to cook and clean (Good life skills) and she is positive in the face of adversity, caring, compassionate, and kind. These are good character traits for every generation. How is it seen by anyone as offensive or out-dated? No, I will not see this reboot whenever it is released, but I will likely cuddle up with the original 1937 animated classic instead.

I actually do have two guilty pleasures which is the Aladdin and the beauty and the beast remakes, I can’t deny that I do like those remakes. But yea, why can’t parents just show the classics to their kids instead of the remakes?? Plus! If Disney really wants more money, they why can’t they just do those anniversary theater releases on the classic movies??? They did that with the lion king and the nightmare before Christmas before, so why can’t they just do that?? They could win extra money with that! 😲

And I hope Rachel Zegler see this podcast and understood what she said of her opinions about her feeling about the original Snow White, that make so many Disney fan hate her so much. But from my point of view, she got set-up by Disney and Bob Iger. They hire the woke writers from the 'Barbie' movie to change the original structure of the Snow White's story line. Basically, they want to make 'Barbie' out of their Snow White. But they do not realize that the different between Barbie and Snow White is like compared from Apple (No pun intended) to Orange. I am glad to hear from a women point of view, and it is really refreshing.

Thanks so much for these very kind thoughts. You are right that when actors speak publicly, it's often not their own opinions really. Zegler is so young and she will be surrounded by people who tell her to say this or do that because it will be a good career move. Of course, she's an adult so she is responsible for what she decides to say and do. But generally I think things go better for actors if they avoid controversial topics in public. I will try to keep making episodes that you find helpful!

I guess I don't really count those as part of the current batch of remakes. The 101 Dalmations remake wasn't a great work of art but it was fun, and Glenn Close absolutely threw herself into the role. At the very least it was a remake that was made by people who clearly loved and respected the original story. The 2016 Jungle Book remake had some lofty goals but I feel it just didn't quite execute them.

Yeah I saw that leaked footage showing Snow White bossing everyone around to do their chores while doing nothing herself. That was . . . a choice, I guess. A huge part of what made Snow White a likeable character was that she was a good friend and was willing to do her bit to be a member of the household she'd been welcomed into. I don't have a problem with that at all. I think that if you're going to adapt a story, you need to stick to the text. Not all stories are about all kinds of people, and that's FINE. Snow White has hair as black as ebony, lips as red as blood, and skin as white as snow. That means certain actors can't play the part. No problem. There's nothing stopping them having a fresh take. There are many parts of the world, including a lot of Asia, where this story could be set without breaking the lore. Sadly, obnoxious actors are a global phenomenon so those will turn up everywhere!!

I'm sorry but as someone who speaks more than 1 germanic language, your point about dwarves is off. It 100% meant both mythical creature and the humans. Them living in the woods, human or magical, is no coincidence. And since it is Germanic, not Norse, you can't use everything Norse to defend them. Showing Kabouters, gnomes instead of dwarves in some pictures does not help your point. I do agree with you largely, so it is a shame you include flawed arguments in defense of your opinion.

Also, dont know how they didn't take into consideration that the fact that the person who said this is discriminatory against people with dwarfism, is the most successful one. One who doesn't sn't have the burden of being financially unstable and has a successful acting career. On who became the most famous after playing a role that was a dwarf. You think they could have deduced that maybe he's, I don't know, trying to keep all those roles to himself?

I think it's possible he honestly was worried about stereotypical treatment. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and Dinklage made other comments about not wanting to hate on anyone else, and being fine with it if it was handled in a good way. Honestly, I think there are a million better ways Disney could have handled the casting of the dwarves. In the past it made sense to hire mainly little people because the technology just didn't exist to do face replacement, motion capture, or digital size alteration on a typically-sized actor. Today there are a lot more options. Filmmakers could stick with little people, which would certainly allow for more natural acting and less expensive effects. Or they could use digital resources to alter the appearance of an actor who wasn't a little person. Either way, these are prime roles that any actor would want, and given how few opportunities there are for little people in Hollywood, I could see why they'd be eager to grab these parts!

Good video. Since ya asked about thoughts, may I share my thoughts of what would have made this a great video? And, please, no hate, I mean this from a place of the heart. When people talk about money grabs, how bad quality is made simply for money, I want to stop watching. That is subjective. That is an opinion. Yes, it's your chanel and you're free to share your opinion, but by making a quality video, you're already telling your opinion. Honestly all movies are made as ways to make money. All actors pour their hearts into their projects, good intent is all over, but unfortunately not every movie, series, whatever, will gel with everybody. There are many reasons something can fail. Your analysis is awesome! I agree that, unfortunately, Ms. Zigler spoke out of turn. She doesn't understand. But also remember she's young. These kids do not know the history, they have learned a lot from memes and KZbin analysis videos where "experts" have been telling them for years Disney is big bad corporation disparaging women, antiquated views, etc. They are excited kids who don't learn until they've made stupid mistakes like that and learn. I wish Mr. Dinklage would have learned a little more about the history of Zwerge. I am from Germany and hate the way it's translated into Englishx because you are correct, they are totally different things. I hope they do cone around and hire little persons for the roles, I've seen many interviews of other actors saying they'd love the role. Anyway, I really enjoyed the last section, and glad I didn't stop. The world kinda sucks (subjective opinión lol) so don't add negativity, spread hope and the important lessons parts. I hope that makes sense. And again, I'm not saying anything bad, please don't hate on me fellow commentators. We should wish creators the best of success, and if I had videos with this much potential, I'd welcome opinions to reach a wider audience, and that's all I'm doing

I’m disappointed in yet another obvious cash grab. I’ll most likely see it just out of curiosity.

Hold on, I thought this movie came out on February 4, 1937, not in December, where are you getting your information from?

The film's official premiere was on December 21, 1937 at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. You are right that the general theatrical release was on the 4th of February but this was in 1938. You can find this info on a bunch of film history sources, including Time Magazine. The issue put on on December 27, 1937 verifies the release date.

Will you make more videos like these? I mean about movies and tv shows. I don’t see you have a lot of videos like this on your channel. 2:50 you don’t have to be that to give an opinion about that.

When there is an adaptation of children's stories, yes, I will talk about them. I don't want to stray too far from talking about the books themselves, though, so even when discussing adaptations I will always try to talk about the books as much as I can.
