i think the problem with complaining about the coffee prices is that when we poor people talk about their financial struggles and how it affects our abilities to do something else than pay for rent and bills, we are instantly moralized for it. like "why are you going to a coffee shop to begin with if you're that poor", that kind of thing. so when rich people come online to complain about prices that have literally NO effect on their financial stability, it just pisses me off. if poor people can't complain about the price of coffee because of our finances, then rich people can't do that either, anything else is classism.

So. There’s a real problem with people in America living paycheck-to-paycheck while literally spending all their money on DoorDash, UberEats, Uber, purchasing cars they can’t afford (unfortunately, often due to scammy used car dealerships and not researching used car prices properly), buying a house without the money for a downpayment (like literally getting a personal loan for the downpayment and closing costs instead of saving up for them) or with mortgage payments above what they can afford, living in apartments too expensive for what they can afford, maxing out credit cards and owing thousands annually (and sometimes even monthly) just in minimal monthly payments on their debts, etc. But I believe the problem is a lack of education and poor role models. There are studies that point out that you’re at a higher risk of declaring personal bankruptcy if your parents had a bankruptcy when you were young… There is definitely a fallacy in claiming that you’re poor because of avocado toast and Starbucks, but at the same time, all those little things add up, even more if you put them on a credit card that’s accruing interest. An $8 Starbucks drink 5 times a week over the course of a month adds up to $130-150 a month… Going out to eat every other day adds at least $15 per person per day, that’s over $200 a month… You need to keep fun money in order not to go insane-that’s fair. But if you’re using the fun money literally every day, you’re just eating up all the fun you could have in the future by not keeping it in control today. Many Americans don’t even know how interest works or how interest free debts work, they’re buying on “interest free for 6 months” promises not realizing that if they haven’t paid in 6 months, they’ll owe back interest that’s accrued over that whole period. Some do debt consolidation only to max out the credit cards again… IMO the issue isn’t the individual, it’s definitely the system, but there are steps individuals can take to break out of it.

21:22 Hey, fun fact, when you’re an influencer you get to choose what event you attend or don’t attend. If you don’t like evening events, don’t do evening events. If doing 10 events a month is too exhausting, do less? If I don’t come in to work on Monday for no reason at all or I decide to leave work early and stand up a client, I’ll be fired.

So I started my career as a lawyer in 2011 and I only made 50k before taxes. At that time you could be a taco bell general manager and make 48k a year before taxes. I had 145k in law school debt. Now you can earn up to 107k a year as a Panada Express general manager. I had to get a second job to afford my student loans which were 12% interest ans more than my entire paycheck. I stopped being a lawyer in 2017 since I couldn't get any law firm to give me a raise no matter how hard I worked. It's insane. So I get so infuriated when influencer whine about money and how hard they work.

20yr veterinary medicine career down the drain for me. No matter how many hours I put in or worked so hard at my job I still struggled to pay off anything. It's sad that a "real" career doesn't pay the bills anymore. Now I see why young kids are wanting to be an influencer when they grow up and not a doctor, nurse or a lawyer.

Yes! It also infuriates me when these girls won't accept a man that earns less than 200k a month! Are you serious? What world do you live in? Me and my husband don't even get to 150K a year and we are not bad off compared to other people and that's considering I'm a professional and that allows me to make more, but not 200K a month.....I feel like these girls will be so disappointed by rejecting men that could be truly valuable human beings, just because of wanting to live a rich lifestyle, definitely tone deaf in my opinion that they think that's the reality of life.

I don't think a lot of these influencers realize how fleeting money or fame can be, especially if you make the wrong move or say the wrong things. Although I noticed a lot of these tone deaf influencers have younger audiences who can't critically think for themselves and will defend their favourites no matter what.

I work with special needs children. I don’t get paid $200k a year, but what I get in return for my hard work money can’t buy. Giving back to society in a real way is more valuable than a review of some gifted beauty product or showing off some new expensive designer good. Another reason I’m HAPPY to not be on TikTok.

Everyone complains about their jobs, but this is like listening to the bratty kids from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And dont get me wrong-people putting in time to make quality content is work and provides something to the audience. That’s why we’re here. And so many of the people I subscribe to on KZbin say how much they appreciate being able to do this instead of having a more difficult conventional job. But these TikTokers drive me crazy. Awww people didn’t watch your video? People bullied you online for things you yourself shared without anyone asking you to? Some scam health supplement didn’t offer you enough money to promote them? That’s soooo tragic, I’ll play my tiny violin if I have any time after dealing with a broken drill rig at my job in the real world.

The last GRWM vid you covered was a HUGE case covered by many people - horrifying case. I watched it the first tiime on a KZbin : Rotten Mango covered it. There is a huge movement for women's rights in India right now because women will even go for the right degree and be what is supposed to be a safe environment - yet still get attacked. They also think that she was set up because she was trying to speak up against the rules and for the rights of the doctors. There was a lot of corruption in that hospital. The president also left but got a job at another hospital. The hospital ended up being vandalized. It's one of those gut wrenching cases for women's rights. If you do not have a strong stomach do not research it.

Whenever influencers complain about their lives, it just further emphasizes the massive wealth inequality. The gap in wealth between the lower class and the rich is almost as bad as the Great Depression. So seeing people spend the equivalent a year’s worth of a salary on a handbag is gonna make you feel a type of way. Or seeing people who get to fly private jets and stay in 5-star hotels in exotic resorts for free while you can barely afford to keep your lights on. The other issue is these influencers forget that the folks who work the same long hours as them do literal mind numbing back breaking labor. Janitors, garbage collectors, construction workers, restaurant kitchen staff, landscapers, and warehouse factory workers also wake up at 6:00am every day and work 9-12 hours a day. They don’t get paid millions on dollars. They don’t get free stuff. Most of them don’t even get weekends off. Some of them can’t even afford basic groceries or health insurance. They also get regularly harassed by other people due to their job being seen as inferior and not worthy or respect. Those are the people who have the right to complain about $10 coffee. Those are the people who have the right to complain about having to do the same thing at their job every day. People who get paid to sit in their McMansions/upscale apartments filming themselves putting on makeup and trying on luxury clothes will never relate to the level of dread normal workers have. So yeah, all I can say to influencers who say “Stop saying my life is easy! I work hard and get sad too!” is boo-fuckity-hoo.

“It’s easy to make money now. Look how much money we have and what do we do?” Of course it’s easy to make money when popularity, whether positive or negative, attracts sponsors. It takes no discernible skills to be popular, and they both seem to be aware of that, but don’t seem to care. Similar to what I commented on a previous video, their shallowness doesn’t bother me as much as how fleeting what they’re doing is. They’re making a lot of money from work that’s forgettable.

And another thing is; influencing was seen as a get rich quick scheme. Be pretty, get free stuff and live the life. These people are in the influencing sphere because they did not want the traditional 9-5 and “hard work” now they realize how saturated the environment is and you actually DO have to work to keep your place in that world. It must be very humbling for them.

5:52 for the first video- what makes this offensive, imo, is that: not only is this a ridiculously rich influencer complaining about coffee prices, but a rich influencer on a trip to HAWAI’I- a place that has been and still is suffering the effects of colonization and exploitation in the name of tourism and online clout. Hawaiians have *repeatedly* asked that haole not visit their lands for vacations / for the photos etc as the continual tourist based exploitation drives the class divide and exploitation and gentrification of the land even further, keeping the actual Kānaka out of jobs, resources, sacred lands, etc. for a white influencer to fly to HAWAI’I of all places and complain about the price of *coffee*?!?! More than being tone deaf, with the broader cultural context I’d say it is absolutely offensive and another example of privilege and willful ignorance at play.

Agree with your views on this. While it’s possible to have frustrations with any job, or stressors at any income level, I think those complaints are best shared with a close confidant or therapist (especially since you can afford one!). To whine & moan about how tough you have it to the audience that pays your bills is unprofessional & out of touch. One example that really annoyed me on insta a few months ago was an influencer i followed whining about how annoying it was to have to fuel her vehicle (not my favorite task either but it doesn’t even take 5 minutes). Like maybe be grateful you have a giant new vehicle & can easily afford to fuel it & you live in sunny California. Meanwhile some of us are double checking our account balances before we stop at the gas station, & have to fuel our much older vehicles in freezing snowy weather. A lot of these influencers would be well-served by having to work a normal job & being paid an average salary for a few weeks

Please please please let's not ignore a huge fact that concerns all influencers (as well as OF creators): while they're still young they may be making good money, but once they approach let' s say, 35 years of age, their income will start to seriously decline as a new & fresher generation of creators will be replacing them. Thus, these ladies will notl only be left without any fans paying for their expensive lifestyles but also without any skills or knowledge enabling them to get started on a decent profession.... I' m afraid they will all end up as cleaning ladies, cleaning up other people's toilets!! 😂✌️❤️❤️

This is sooo fun. I don't think that it's tone deaf if you have money and complain about something like coffee being expensive. But if you get stuff for free (like the 2nd influencer) and take advantage of people being kind to you and THEN complain that you had to pay 10 dollars for coffee, THAT is tone deaf to me. Or being rich but asking for free stuff- I mean girl come ooooon.

AND another thing is these are the “boss babes” but they have NO work ethic. The OG KZbin beauty gurus, back then would never come on KZbin and complain to us, because they are exactly where they want and are working towards MORE! These new influencers want it to magically happen for them with no hard work and progress and that’s the way TikTok was originally set up.

The ones complaining about views and engagement just don't get it. Her followers don't 'owe her' views. If they don't find her new content interesting to them then of course they're not going to watch it. It's not a judgement against her personally but she seems to be taking it that way. The problem with influencers is that they're way too attached to the fruits of their labor/views. If they're doing something they love then views are just a bonus. If they're flip-flopping around with the content chasing trends then of course they're going to lose people. I think some of them become way too attached to the parasocial relationship and think that views/engagement = they like me personally/we're friends, so they'll love anything I put out there. That may be true for some viewers but how many? Influencers need to become a bit more detached from their 'product' and think of it like an artist, i.e. do good work, put it where people can see it, but most of all do/create good work. Also, become detached from feedback/comments. Feedback/comments is data. It's no different than a product review that provides an opportunity for change/improvement. I like your style as a youtuber, I like the content you're producing showing and commenting on this kind of stuff but if you were to go back to reviewing handbags fulltime then that's not my kind of content. It wouldn't mean I didn't like you anymore it would just mean I'd rather spend that time doing something more of interest to me. No doubt you understand that. A lot of these influencers clearly do not. It's not that I think of you or anybody else creating content as a 'consumable' at all it's just about what I would rather be spending my own time watching/doing. If an influencer wants to change their content that's great but trying to guilt their followers for not loving is out of touch.

Hiiii! I've been binge watching you for months but I don't comment a lot but now I have to. The first influencer complaining about 600 views boggles my mind. The answer to her frustration and complaints are right there in her response but she just doesn't see it. I'm about to be 56 and I see things so differently. It's so clear to me that as you said, it's the nature of social media. No one gets anywhere by complaining. The out of touch ones doing what I see as more "disposable" content, they're often just trying to sell things people probably don't even need. 🤦🏼‍♀️ There are a lot of subtleties, but the reality is that in being an "influencer", what they complain about- it comes with the job. It's literally what the one girl complained about: thinking of, creating, editing, posting content and trying to stay "relevant". That is the job 🤷🏼‍♀️ and they chose to pursue it. Maybe if they didn't constantly chance relevancy, they'd be more grateful. I create content simply because it makes me happy and I want to share my little side of the world and life with people so maybe they can just be distracted by something for a little while. It's can be a dark and scary world. Personally I try to make it a little better and if I can, as you say, bring value that way, it's good enough for me. I believe success is found in gratitude and finding joy in what we do if we can, finding a purpose. To put what I think of tone deaf influencers into one sentence, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I think the problem is that most of these influencers are really young and they've had some fame and now they feel really entitled to be gifted with lavish things and basically worshiped by millions of adoring fans. But they maybe have never worked a "real job." I don't mean they might not have picked up shifts at a grocery store or worked as a waitress, but honest to goodness had a different career before social media. In other careers it's not easy to make $200,000 a month oh my goodness that was crazy when they were talking like that. I can't stand it when influencers get on and complain in these snotty voices. They only influencers I follow are likeable people I'd actually want to be friends with in real life.

I agree with your last comment, I think social media does distort people's perception of what is acceptable and what is not based on the videos the consume, and for influencers in particular, it might be based on the views and likes they get, distorting the type of content they put out and how they view reality.

24:20 i think its less about being objectively “hard” and more about how much influencers get paid for the work. Like show me one other job where someone is paid 10k for a single project? Like filming and planning an add is obviously work. But you cant tell me you work harder than me in my 9-5 and i make CRUMBS

She's acting like it's her followers' faults that she can't produce videos that someone wants to watch. That's all you, sweetie. Do your job and figure out what's better. That's part of being someone who produces videos for a living. And that's how a job, any job, works. Everyone in every job has to take responsibility for doing their job and figuring out how to do it well.

Do these people not realize we don't need them. I can't think of the last real celebrity who complained about being famous. Most understand there is an expiration date on their career and to enjoy it while it lasts. These people aren't even famous! "fill in the social platform" famous does not count. I don't know any of the people you featured but I know who Beyonce is. I hope they save their money.

I think hard work will always be relative. For me, it's the audacity to complain about it online to the followers who support them, when the reward for their hard work is way greater than the hard work of their followers, and is dependant on the relationship with said followers. In the real world when you don't produce quality work, you don't get a raise, so being an influencer complaining no one's watching is hilarious. I also think it's fair for anyone thinking a 10 dollar coffee is extortionate, it is, even when you can afford it. But maybe Hawaii isn't the place to do it.

24:17 this! I believe that the divide/tone deaf comments come from the fact that there are people going through a lot in the world and even those fortunate enough to have a good job (myself included) feel it’s ridiculous to say being an influencer is hard but to them it may be true?? since they haven’t had to work in the traditional sense. Love that there are influencers that are honest and can appreciate they may not have it as hard as some. Compassion goes both ways!

On the Sarah coffee thing, I totally agree. For me it comes to food. I will spend any amount on a fantastic meal. We love trying Michelin star restaurants for instance. But I hate spending $15 on a disappointing gross meal. It frustrates me. And I super hate spending $100 on a bad meal. I agree it’s the principal and how much something is theoretically worth. And I hate the “certain income to date” conversation. I argue it doesn’t matter what they make if they have good financial mindset and good money habits. No matter how much you make you can be in debt and living beyond your means.

Feels like maybe I'm just old but imo the person who sees a 'glamorous' vacation/work trip and comments like 'UMM but I'm poor soOoOoO...' is the one being tone deaf. Like dang, fam, not everything is for 'the audience' sometimes people just want to post an experience they are excited about.

Another great vid Caitlin, from my perspective it just feels like models complaining about a job that they are PRIVILEGED to do. These women are the beauty standard, they are given more than enough opportunities and they come and complain to us PEASANTS 😭 booooooooooo 🍅 If you want to complain get a therapist, talk to your influencer friends but the audacity to come complain to the people who put you in this very privileged position is not the vibe.

I feel like TikTok is def worse than YT right now with all this, but I also have a theory it depends on how young you blow up. If you blow up even late 20s-30s vs late teens-early 20s when you haven’t rly worked several regular jobs & known what that’s like, you’re just soooo far removed from reality!!

14:27 this was the only creator that I think doesn’t belong on this list. Not for this. Most creative people (writers, alleged artists, illustrators, photographers, etc.) want people to care about their product. I get her frustration. Yes, it’s whiny, but I get her frustration. That doesn’t make her tone deaf. I see both sides here. I get the privilege of complaining about lack of views for a job most people can’t do, but I also get why she’s upset. Her issues are valid. Now the woman at 19:40 is tone deaf.

Every time I hear someone talk about tone deaf influencers I immediately think of Molly Mae, she once said that she's self made. But upon investigating she comes from an upper middle class family in the UK where BOTH parents are successful business owner. Those two girls on the podcast sound like two 5 year old girls talking about how much their dads make, and they are the reason why I want my children to work in retail or in hospitality as soon as they receive their NI numbers.

First thing...I'm not sure why they are referred to as " influencers"....I have never been "influenced" by anyone I have watched. What I have found with most KZbinrs (not all) is that they are so fake. The non stop shopping halls, the endless vacation posts, the new house tours. Now, I don't watch those types of videos, because frankly, I find most of them annoying. The fake nails that they feel the need to tap on everything they show. I generally only watch a video, if I'm looking up how to do something or if one shows up in my feed I might find interesting like this one. I don't think any of these people you've shown could handle a real job! Like actually getting their a$$ out of bed at 5am, driving to work, working 8 hours and driving home at 6pm...5 days a week.

When Mikayla had her famous meltdown...it was the beginning of the end for influencers. That was the moment that 'the norms' saw how spoiled and entitled these people are...and that their luxurious lifestyles are built on the backs of people who have to actually WORK for a living. 🤔

I think it’s OK to complain about the price of coffee even if you’re wealthy however, the reason I think this woman was doing it and it’s annoying to me is that she’s trying to be “relatable” when the price of those airline tickets is just unrelatable for 99.9% of humans. Even wealthy people do not choose to fly private or choose first class all the time because they want do something else with their money. So if she wanted to do something else with her $10, she did not need to buy that coffee! I think it’s just the hypocrisy of complaining about the coffee and not complaining about their airline tickets.
