This movie taught me that even intelligence cannot cover ones weaknesses, because that opening scene reveals how much of a genius Mark is, but also reveals his greatest flaw, which is his inability to connect, which results in him losing that argument with Erica.

Sorkin’s script and Eisenberg’s acting are great combo for the appropriate subject matter or character study, it’s uncommon to find that sweet spot.

Love that you spoke so much about the score, absolutely classic. Serves the story and enhances the the emotional context continually, not just dropped in clumsily. Brilliant!

I absolutely adore this film and I went to see it twice at the cinema. It’s so meticulous in its production that it’s amazing they pulled it off the way they did.

Still waiting for a review of any tarkovsky film
@AdamFishkin6 жыл бұрын
Made the mistake of starting with Solaris ... even after multiple viewings I'm not sure the experience of viewing it was real and forming an opinion is still tough. Maybe a better choice would've been Ivan's Childhood.
@Danny-ql2it6 жыл бұрын
Maybe, ivan's childhood is his most accessible film but you won't get a lot from it once you understand it (it's still a great film though and a technical masterpiece), it's a good start for tarkovsky but when you watch his other films you'll feel the difference they're way more complex and interesting, and he also made films like mirror, it is nothing but memories and dreams there's no philosophical questions or deeper meanings, it's just about a dying man remembering his childhood and moments and events that impacted his life. watch this amazing video on tarkovsky's style of filmmaking kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5yZo3xjn5Vqh7c

Great movie. I remember Roger Ebert was giving "The Social Network" a lot of praise. Much like he gave a rave review for "Crash"
@deepfocuslens6 жыл бұрын
I should review that one. haha

Wait, which "Crash" are we talking about here? I haven't seen the Cronenberg one and the other one just sucks ass.

Your reviews are so helpful in clarifying my own thinking. Really great stuff. Feel the same way as you about Social Network vs Sorkins other stuff. “Pretentious as fck” is such a great summary of Jobs and esp Newsroom, and yet Social Network was brilliant. One that I think would be interesting (unless you already hate it lol) is the Fugitive. I can’t put a finger on why I like the movie and yet I do. I think others feel the same way, it’s almost annoyingly simple yet don’t want to turn it off when I’m flipping channels and it shows up

Excellent review as usual. You distilled the movie into the key elements yet again. I agree about Eisenberg. I really can't imagine anyone else in that role.
@captainhowlerwilson5083 жыл бұрын
I would say that Andrew Garfield steals the show without a doubt. Eisenberg is great, but he went on playing the same type of character over and over again.

Sums it up pretty well. I consider Fincher this era's current top master of cinematic craft. Fight Club, The Social Network and Gone Girl are his triad of opuses and the latter two seem to inform the mainstream 2010s aesthetic: sharp, very digitized images with gloomy contexts.

Have you seen Molly's Game? Usually Aaron Sorkin is hit or miss for me, but it was probably my favorite movie from last year. His directorial style sort of apes the Scorcese style of direction from Goodfellas or Casino, but it has the sort of dialogue you'd expect from Sorkin. Shame it wasn't really nominated for anything at the Oscars.
@captainhowlerwilson5083 жыл бұрын
I am sorry, but I was finding it difficult to feel sorry for Mark in this film. He does all these really questionable things that are deplorable and his arrogance just gets progressively worse and worse. Not degrading the writing or anything, but he was just someone I just loved to hate.

I gotta disagree with you about Sorkin. I've always admired the way that he uses language in dialogue to convey a point, and how he uses words in such a unique way. It's really hard to explain it.
@Damezumari16 жыл бұрын
Dear Deep: I write this only to advise you that you made one word choice in your review which is, by now, a mistake so common for the general public that I do not bother to correct anyone, ever, about such a microscopic error in diction. But you are different; words, in some sense, are your stock-in-trade. And so I hate to see you, the most articulate movie reviewer on the internet(in my opinion), do something so thoughtless. I offer not a criticism, but a correction. You characterized Zuckerberg as "antisocial." That is wholly incorrect. An antisocial person is really a criminal personality. I think you meant to call him an introvert or a neurotic. Perhaps even "asocial" or just isolated emotionally. That would be much more accurate. But my esteem for you and your work continues to increase. I always benefit from your insights. Kindest regards, D

I liked it, but I’d sort of agree that ‘Seven’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Gone Girl’ are better films out of Fincher’s films. It is well made though.

You only just got rnd to reviewing this movie!? Well thats way better than me, ive still never seen it and got put off more when i saw that kid from Amazing Spiderman got cast in that role just because of his role in this movie. I was wondering if you could one day watch a film called the Remains of the Day, it stars Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, its a great film about unrequitted love, and i keep trying to work out if Hopkin's character in the movie actually has schizoid disorder. If you could do a video essay or review on that film id really appreciate your thoughts on it.
