This triggered a memory. I asked my father (who earned a masters in sociology and wrote a thesis on crim/organized crime) about why people commit crimes and what is the difference between sociology and psychology when it comes to thinking about crime. He gave me a lot of explanations I didn't understand (at about age 11) and then said something like- "When it comes right down to it, sociologists care about the external influences on the individual and how we might change those to prevent future crime and psychologists don't care nearly as much about the benefits social change might bring, but are more interested in these internal processes." It also brought back memories of my first (community) college class (sociology) from Dr. Nnamdi Anosike, who encouraged me to persist in college.Thank you for the triggers!

I go to school because I don't want to feel out with my friends. But my mom told me to find a job to support us. Because of financial problem.

@melaninkwaks thanks for sharing this. This is a common concern I hear from students and a great example of the sociological imagination. This is also where Mills would ask some questions of you: what do you want out of this situation? What outcome best benefits your long term goals? You are experiencing two strong forms of social pressure here, so before you decide to follow either, think about what you want out of this situation first regardless of those social pressures. There may be other paths to consider, ones that support your choices rather than others. Thanks for supporting the channel and always happy to answer questions. And let me know what you decide to do!

@@dr.maples Great response, I agree wholeheartedly. I am a mature-aged student who has decided through once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Uni and major in sociology. I am doing the degree because I always wanted to do it and now that I have the time and again the opportunity, a bit late in my life one would say but I always say never too late to realise a goal. Many thanks for your video it was very interesting. From Perth WA.

@@dr.maples@ dr.maples Hello Dr Maples, thank you for your reply, I have given the subject much thought and I would like to know if you could do a video on religious secularisation. There is a lot of information on the internet but I would really appreciate your thoughts on the topic, especially religion versus the state. All the best from Perth WA.
