They hailed from the Canterbury scene in the mid 60s, The bands name is from the Williams Burroughs book "The Soft Machine" which is an pretty interesting read.

Great stuff. Not their easiest song to approach for a first listen. I'd recommend the fist 2 albums for something more rock/psychedelic, or albums for 3 to 6 for a jazzier/fusion sound.

Wow! You all listen to the best music. I grew up listing to my moms record albums from the sixties (one of the reasons I got into Frank Zappa and then also why I found your channel. And she had a bunch of soft machine albums. The one you’re looking at which actually moved in the album cover like it was gears in the machine.

The drummer is the vocalist. He was eventually forced out by the non-vocalist jazzers. Hendrix was both a fan and friends with them and so he invited them to tour the States with him on his first headlining tour in 1968. Pink Floyd used to support Soft Machine on the small psychedelic rock scene in 1967 until they had a breakout hit single (See Emily Play). When Syd has his breakdown Soft Machine got into the studio with him to help get his first solo recordings together. At the same time as this video (1970) Soft Machine were also invited to be the first rock band to play at the annual classical music festival Promenade Concerts at The Royal Albert Hall. They basically played their THIRD album (4x20 minute tracks) there with drummer Robert Wyatt singing on Moon In June. I saw them just after that, after having also seen them in 1969. They were awesomely good both times. A key band in the psychedelic scene in London and despite both Floyd and Hendrix loving them, they are always overlooked. Incidentally the super-cool Mike Routledge (keys) also married singer Marsha Hunt (Walk on Gilded Splinters) when Mick Jagger got her pregnant and then disappeared, so that she wouldn't be deported from the U.K.

Loved the disciplined chaos, anarchic musicality. Cool, trippy AF. The classic rock band I joined, initially as soundman, in '05, played with through to '07 was a substitute for the bassist's Rush jones and tribute. They'd followed my canceled acoustic open-stage into the 2nd floor of the Black Swan, a blues and rock bar in Toronto where I served as soundman. Pete, the bassist, used charts for every song. Also programmed Midi parts for any songs requiring them... horns, keys, misc. percussion, etc.😊❤

The Soft Machine are just different. A kind of Jazz-Rock from Canterbury. The main themes are composed and they improvise in between. Elton Dean had several bands in 1970 (his own jazz band and also playing with Keith Tippet quintet or Ian Carr's Nucleus). He could not memorize everything that's why he had sheets of Music... Nothing to do with Acid Jazz (they play much too fast for Acid)... One of my favourite bands with John Coltrane's Quartet and Cecil Taylor's...

My favorite UK drummer, Robert Wyatt. He has the punch of John Bohnam with the wild chops of a Ginger Baker, with the tidy-ness of Buddy Rich. These have always been my thoughts on him anyway.

Good pick Chuck!! I have never seen this particular version. I guess the sax replaces Wyatts vocals. There is a rehearsal video of Wyatt, Ratledge and Hopper as a trio killing it out there I recommend and the studio version slays as well. The trio I mentioned above can also be heard as Syd Barrett's backing band on several of his solo tracks on his two solo albums. Once Wyatt left, they pretty much turned into a full on jazz band and later added Allan Holdsworth. How can you go wrong with Holdsworth? And to answer and agree with Dan, this is big time tripping music. Next time you want to gobble a couple hits, Soft Machine debut thru Forth can't be beat. You can add Soft Machine founder Daevid Allen's band Gong to the tripping music Playlist. The debut thru You is just beyond psychedelic. I've been waiting for this one all week! Love Soft Machine!! Chuck knocked it out of the park with this one!!

Yo Chaz! Thanks for the tip on the rehearsal video. Gotta check that out. I saw these guys open for Hendrix (true!) at Merriweather Post Pavilion, a venue I'm sure is familiar to you. I was but a wee lad of 16 at the time and very impressionable. Needless to say I was blown away by Soft Machine. Then Hendrix came on. I ain't been right ever since! 🤣

The first album I ever bought was Fourth. An odd choice for a 15 yr old maybe. I was listening to Third today which has their last track with lyrics on it Wyatts Moon in June. They were the first “rock” band to play st the Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. They had a rapidly changing lineup. Wyatt fell out of a window and broke his back leaving him paraplegic. He continued to write and perform and be politically active. You should check out some of his solo stuff. I think Mike Routledge played a Lowry organ but I’m sure somebody will Corine if I’m wrong

Haven't seen this before and find it much better than the album version. Not my favourite prog band from this period but better than lots of ordinary bands around this time. As good as they are, my biggest critisism of this band is for the type of music they play they desperately lack having a good guitarist. It would have given them a better sound. A bit like building a new car, having all the top notch fittings etc but forgetting to put any wheels on it. Still, I liked this and was a nice change up after yesterdays tedium. Good choice Chuck and liked the reaction too.

Cheers Paul! Agree about SM missing a guitarist. Later versions of the band had guitarists (Holdsworth being one of them, as Chaz mentioned). A ripping guitar solo in this performance would've been awesome. I still like what they did with what they had. But one thing that they had in their early days that I didn't like was their vocals. Not a fan. Almost painful to listen to sometimes. I think they eventually dispensed with the vocals and stuck to instrumentals. Thankfully! Just my take, of course.

@@shoutinchuck3363 Agree Chuck. Imagine, Holdsworth letting rip once or twice on this..drool, lol. Believe Andy Summers of Police fame was with them in the early days but never featured on an album and was quickly fired. Agree about doing instruments too, lol Good choice anyway.

@@paulfenwick8767 A Holdsworth solo in this performance? They would have to rename it "Esther's Melted Brain Cells"! 😂 That would make it REAL "acid jazz".

they can play no doubt but the particular song had no sweetness in it at all...i will look at more of their music because they were headlining concerts in britain and europe in the late 60's early 70's..

I like but this album still feels like SM are still seraching for themselves. The album SOFT MACHINE "SOFTS" is GORGEOUS and their best, "more Progressive than Jazz", and a far more refined & defined rhythmic album. The songs are either melodic & linear that transition seamlessly into gorgeous smooth guitar & sax solos at their calmest while sweeping in high velocity & intense virtuosity at the most dynamic! Features new guitarist John Etheridge. Serious recommendation!

Soft machine = human. Their Third (double) album and Fourth album are probably best. Elton Dean's soaring sax, Robert Wyatt's intricate drumming.
