Ronnie James Dio is just simply the greatest heavy metal singer ever. That voice is effortless and he sounded like that til he was in his sixties. Endless power... Total legend. Also, my Dad who's no longer here, was fortunate enough to meet him twice and yes I do have the photo saved with me, Dio was basically one of the nicest and kindest people you would ever meet. He would always remember all the fans name and even the names of the persons family. Shows you how he cared for his fans deeply. May his legacy live on for eternity.

Rainbow was the solo band formed in 1975 by Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) after he quit his iconic band Deep Purple... The brilliant guitarist was eccentric and unpredictable, so he went through quite a few members from 1975 to 1984. In 1975, Blackmore decided to start a new band from scratch and hired the band Elf (who had opened for Deep Purple on tour) to record Rainbow's debut album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow"... However, Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the only member retained for the 2nd album 'Rising' in 1976 as Rainbow began touring... It was followed by a 3rd studio album "Long live rock n roll" in 1978 and live album 'On Stage'. In 1979, Ritchie Blackmore wanted Rainbow to pursue a pop rock-oriented direction but singer Ronnie James Dio refused and was subsequently fired... Graham Bonnet (vocals) did the 4th album 'Down to Earth'... but did not last as a member of Rainbow. In 1981, vocalist Joe Lynn Turner joined Rainbow and their pop direction yielded their biggest albums - 'Difficult to cure' (1981)... 'Straight between the eyes' (1982) and 'Bent out of shape' (1983) w/ the hit singles - 'Street of dreams'... "Can't let you go" ... "Stone cold'... 'I surrender'... In 1984, Ritchie Blackmore disbanded Rainbow to reform the classic Deep Purple line-up. But in 1993, a frustrated Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple for the last time... he resurrected Rainbow w/ new vocalist Doogie White and released Rainbow's last album 'Stranger in us all'...in 1995, before disbanding Rainbow. Blackmore had since spent years recording and promoting the semi-acoustic duo Blackmore's Night since 1997... w/ his wife, singer Candace Night.

You need to hear the track that follows this on the album, Rainbow Rising, a song called A Light In The Black. Its flubbing brilliant. Richie Blackmore and Tony Kaye are the only ones still left alive, Jimmy Bain, Ronnie Dio and Cozy Powell are all long gone from this world. This, in my mind was Rainbows best iteration and was Blackmore's creative high point. This solo in particular is just legendary and for good reason too.

Guitarist is a founding member of Deep Purple. When he left the band in 1975, he took Dio out of the shadow and put him out there. Dio, 3 years later went on to replace Ozzy to front Black Sabbath. 2 of the 3 bands that are cited as part of the unholy trinity bands what would eventually become Metal. Dio is also the guy that is the origin of the devil hand sign that is so popular today. Knowing you like Pink Floyd, another Rainbow song you will LOVE is Catch the Rainbow. Someone mentionned Uriah Heep. It's a band that wont generate much click but I feel it's right up your alley with song like Tales, The Wizard and Salisbury.

You have just experienced the master Ronnie James Dio on vocals, he was a fantastic live artist as well, so you really should experience him that way as well since it really was his element. There is a great live video from Munich in 1977 with Rainbow if you want to start there and then you can watch him in Black Sabbath from 1980 with the classic song "Heaven and hell" and of course with his own band Dio and especially the live videos from the 80´s. Dio never had any vocal training which is mindblowing since he is by many and certainly me considered the greatest metal singer of all time, i guess he was a natural. What is also mindblowing is that he apparently only reluctantly took the position as singer in the band when they had no one else back in the early days in the 1950´s, he also played bass for many years in the band he was in but stopped doing that in the early 70´s, so this was before Rainbow.

So happy you found Rainbow, another band descended directly from the Gods of Rock. Ritchie Blackmore (Guitar) and Ronnie James Dio (Vocals) are unparalleled at their respective crafts. And this iteration had the masterful Cozy Powell on drums as well. Tony Carey (Keys) and Jimmy Bain (Bass) were also outstanding. As you already noticed 2 minutes into the song: Dio has one of the best rock voices ever. Ritchie Blackmore and David Gilmour are my two favorite guitar players, with obviously different styles. Next Rainbow, I strongly recommend doing the live version of "Catch the Rainbow" from Rainbow on Stage - it is a mind-blowing live performance by Dio and a wonderful dynamic guitar performance by Blackmore. Please try it!

Stacy, the bassist is a guy by the name of Jimmy Bain and may possibly be the most underestimated bassist in the U.S. After leaving Rainbow Ronnie James Dio (the lead vocalist) joined Black Sabbath replacing Ozzy Osbourne and a few years later went solo bringing Jimmy with him. They were an amazing songwriting team. Ronnie eventually rejoined Sabbath and then rejoined the former Sabbath members to form a new band called Heaven and Hell named after their first Black Sabbath album together back in the day. As for Rainbow, it's an ever-evolving band involving the former members of Deep Purple along with other legendary and up and coming musicians. Ronnie James Dio was the first then came Graham Bonnett (lead vocalist of Alcatrazz), Joe Lynn Turner (the most recognized lead vocalist Rainbow has had next to Dio) and a few others. They were still active and touring up until the pandemic began but haven't been heard from since. Hopefully we hear about a new album sometime in the near future but no one knows.

Next time you hear it I would suggest you follow it immediately with "Light In The Black", which finalises this awesome little rock-opera! I'd like to suggest you be the first to properly do "Catch The Rainbow" from their live Album "On Stage" next which, to me, is live music at it's absolute finest and will certainly keep your experiences going at such a high level! Good Luck!

Stacey Ronnie James Dio aka RJD used to play the trumpet when he was very young. Breathing Techniques of playing the trumpet helps his singing of breath control. RJD started out singing in the late 1950's during the early days of Rock N Roll in local singing teen groups with some of their music are posted on here, KZbin. Then mid to late 1960's, RJD delved into more rock according to the times. RJD join Rainbow, band here in this video created by Deep Purple's founder, Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist. Ritchie disbanded Deep Purple. Then he created Rainbow. Few years later, Black Sabbath fired Ozzy. Tony Iommi offered singing gig to RJD. Then Black Sabbath named was changed to Heaven & Hell (name of Black Sabbath's song). RJD left Black Sabbath to go on his solo career until his death in 2010.

Dio was a vocal god pure and simple. I think, just my opinion, that because he was originally a horn player that gave him an edge singing. The breath control and being able to pull from deep in the body to attain and maintain vocal tones. He is also quite possibly the originator of the "Horns" hand signal for metal and rock even though Gene Simmons tries to say it was him. One of the greatest front men ever no matter if it was Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath or Dio. Blackmore can definitely shred a guitar but he was a jerk to the fans. I really can't speak to the other band members except for this crew was a pure power house. Again, my dad introduced me to Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, the first album. And the second, Rising. After that, I was buying my own music as I was no longer in my early teens. Dad was in the Navy and always brought home excellent stereo equipment from West Pac so he would bring the vinyl home and we would sit in the living room and play them all the way through. Great times with Dad!
