The solar-powered Scania truck

Scania’s intensive development of tomorrow’s electrified transport solutions is inspiring many new technological ideas. One of those is a project to develop a solar-powered truck, whose electrical propulsion is generated by the vehicle’s own solar cells, sited in a trailer that’s attached to a hybrid-electric vehicle.

This is a great idea given the large flat surfaces truck-trailers have and the hours they operate... Would probably work well for cargo trains too!

What solar cell technology are you using? From what little I could see, I'm guessing it's CIGS. And if so I'm glad to see someone finally using the best available solar cell technology that I'm aware of for something like this. Also, one of the people said this wasn't possible twenty years ago. That's incorrect, I've been trying to save up to do something similar with my shelter on wheels for longer than twenty years.

There's nothing to do with the trucks. It is a Scania PHEV truck, and it is already on the market. The point is the trailer, equipped with solar-panels on its roof, wired to the battery pack of the PHEV truck.

Please, cut the marketing bulls**t!! This is NOT a solar-powered Scania truck!! It is a diesel-hybrid vehicle, 90%+ of driving range comes from the Internal Combustion Engine and diesel fuel. APTERA, Sono Motors, Lightyear: these are the REAL solar powered vehicles!! "According FCH Europa, long-haul trucks travel 140,000 km a year" - and Scania stated: "panels equip the new truck with a prolonged driving range of up to 3100 miles (5.000 kilometers) per year in Sweden and more than double that in sunny countries like Spain"... so by best case scenario: those solar-panels generates electricity to drive up to 12,000-13,000 kms a year (or from 14 to 32 kms per day!!) - but only on the sunny, South European roads. IT IS LESS THAN 10%. So this truck IS NOT solar-powered, it is DIESEL-powered!

You missed the word: **prolonged** driving range, this is in addition to the power that is stored in the battery, so a 10% improvement on a hybrid engine sounds like a good deal to me. This also helps when they do go to full EV trucks as they'll get extra distance for free essentially

@@ikt123 I do not care about the battery size, because Scania said: “SOLAR-POWERED”. This truck doesn’t powered by solar, it is powered by an internal combustion engine, burns diesel. And you can hook up this type of trailer to any truck, full electric trucks included. You just need to do some extra work to charge the battery pack during driving.

To my thinking Aptera is the one worthy of the title solar car. Sono is done, and Lightyear is beautifully done but at the price point only the 1% can afford. Aptera is going for the regular guy, who sees the innovation, understands it is much less impactful to Mother Earth, safe and a blast to drive, any gearhead would love. Aptera, I believe will be a true game-changer in the world of personal transportation. Getting closer to production, hopefully within a year from now they will be producing the Launch Edition. Once seen on the roads, man it will turn heads, and attract lots of eyeballs and curious folks. Next few months, delta will be being validated, for crash safety, and EPA fuel economy. My Prius that I currently drive, will get around 55 MPG. But the Aptera will most likely get around 330 MPGe. So, my cost to roam will be very small, and because it is carbon fiber it will not rust, and I have already picked out a 9-year-old boy to inherit it. These will be made to last and be upgradeable, when better batteries or solar, or in-wheel-motors come along. Innovation is at Aptera, and smart use of what is out there.

those from Scania are as smart as if they had fucked a fox. 22 kw of energy per day is enough to light the trailer and radio in the cabin. and the glass panels will crack in the first 1000 km of driving.
