Exactly. The whole game is like Sonic going on holiday, encountering the natives (Knuckles), and then finding out that Dr Robotnick has also decided to go on holiday there at the same time and is creating a death star there that just needs the master emerald to power it, so Sonic has to interrupt his holiday and deal with that bellend to make sure his death star never properly launches and uses its power against a continent of people or whatever it is he wants to do, it's kinda unclear why he wants the death star.

the entire sonic 3 soundtrack absolutely slaps, it's been a goddamn masterpiece for like 30 years and it was ignored because video game music wasn't thought of as 'real' music until all the kids who played video games in the 90s grew up and were like '...wait a minute, we were living in a golden land of music and all the adults were WRONG!'

This is the exact opposite for me. I didn't have a Megadrive back then, but I heard this song once or thrice at a friend's house when he was playing Sonic 3 in the 90s, and it got stuck in my head ever since. It is the same thing with the Mario 64 file select screen. Those songs are so unassuming they would make the perfect elevator music.
