While it's clear the first movie wasn't written with a lot of knowledge on the games (the screenwriters directly said they were more focused on the capturing the feeling of that first Genesis game), they did a great job taking so much of the game lore and making it fit into this little world they created. For instance, I like how GUN's existence is linked directly to the events of the first movie, rather than them just being an entity that was always around. Clever way to introduce something from the games and making it work with what was already established.

The fact that Jeff Fowler originally worked on the Shad05 cutscenes, only to direct a trilogy of Sonic movies in the future, one of which has Shadow himself. It's like it was always made to be. The first movie did what it needed to do: make other people get into Sonic. Naturally, Sonic fans would watch and have their own opinions. Getting others into is another deal and for the most part it worked and definitely gave a wave of confidence for the franchise going forth. I do get how people don't like the movies for its deviations, but I like the movies cause its different yet familiar. It needed to be interesting for most people before adding more elements from the franchise, then they new audience will see stuff new to them while the old and current audiences see the familiar material in new lights and perspectives (like with Knuckles...in both ways, haha). Now Shadow will have the same for him. All of them will start out a bit different but grow into the characters we know and cherish In terms of his powers - both can work. You can use wind from his running speed and the electricity being a physical manifestation his power or chaos energy. You could even make a case that his electrical energy partially fuels his speed which can go into wind. Semi-related, but I really do like Tom and Maddie cause they show a genuine couple that care for each other

What I find interesting about this movie is how one of my friends described it. They basically said it's exactly like the first Sonic game, and the more I think about it the more it makes sense: It's the first entry, it has it's handful of flaws, and it's *really* barebones at times, but it also is a big player of nostalgia, as well as it paving the way for future entries that improve on what the first did. I wholeheartedly think she had one of the best ways to describe this movie, and I don't think she was trying to say Sonic 1 (both the movie and game) was bad, just that despite the flaws of both, people still like them and that what they gave us would be given the chance to build to become something even better.

I nagged my dad to watch the first two Sonic movies while visiting family this season, so that we could watch movie 3 together when it comes out with enough context for the main characters. He was initially REALLY averse to it, but I think Jim Carrey saved the movies for him LOL (on top of the action scenes and the rest of the humor, he was also not put off by the Sonic characters surprisingly). Both of us are pretty excited to watch movie 3 now :D

I watched sonic movie 1 a couple days ago and you're so right it is a great movie actually, and it did change everything. I remember at the time of the release of the trailers, Sonic really was in a dump -- Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania had been the last games to be successful, Sonic Forces in 2017 had been really bad, and in 2019 there was Sonic Team Racing which was kinda bad too -- and from 2017 to 2022, there was no major game. And there was the general belief that the last game that worked had been a 2D sonic game, so that implied Sonic could only be successful in 2D and would always be just a nostalgic thing. But then the movie got fixed, and it was great and it was successful and -- suddenly SEGA saw that people cared. And since then we've had two literal massive years with incredible stuff coming out! 2022 was amazing: I remember when they released footage of Sonic Prime, Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Movie 2 in a night, to say "well here's everything we have coming up" - and same with 2024 they had these massive projects again all at once. And really to me it's because of the sonic movie, showing that people cared and that Sonic could be taken seriously - that people wanted the franchise to be treated seriously. Looking at how far we've come, I just really appreciate that it's finally cool to be a Sonic fan again

Agree with your analysis and the comments here! This movie is special for its impact, it's a well-made story for general audiences that loves and respects the source material. Here's a personal thing it stands out for me: This universe, in my opinion, has the best origin story for Sonic so far! Satam/Archie had a great starting plot but the movie's origin feels more at home with how the franchise feels nowadays. Plus, Longclaw, Tom and Maddie are the top tier parents Sonic's ever had across the franchise's history, bar none! (I genuinely believe Sonic Team could canonize Longclaw as Sonic's mom in the games, like they did with Sticks, with relative ease. It's not necessary, and Sonic's dad would be a mystery besides being a Hedgehog, but i think it would be cute and a nice piece of worldbuilding like the Echidna Clan and the Robotnik family tree)

The hype for Sonic Movie 1 is, in my opinion, the most hype I’ve been for any of these movies. The Sonic franchise was in a DEAD state at this point, so it all depended on this. I remember my school allowed us to stay off on February 14, Friday, if we wanted to. So me and my friend (who I also saw Sonic 2 with and gonna go see Sonic 3 with) went to go see the movie at 10 AM that morning. I spent the rest of the day REELING from the Tails post-credits scene. Something about early 2020 before COVID was so peak I don’t know what it eas though.

I always thought Sonic Movie 1 wasn't all that Sonic-ey for lack of a better term with it's plot but it got Sonic and Eggman's characterization right which is all it needed to do to create a foundation for Movies 2 and 3 to build opon and by extension save the games as well as the success of Movie 1 and 2, honestly crazy looking back that this film which not that long ago was the laughing stock of the internet would go on to not only create a successful movie series but also kind of save the Sonic games as well

I went to watch this movie back in 2020 with my best friend, and neither of us were fans of the series then nor after watching the film (I only got into the franchise as a whole this year), but the excitement was *huge* , because as videogame or even pop culture fans, we and lots of people felt this sort of *justice* being made when Sonic's redesign gave us the lovable model we have today. I remember when the definitive trailer came out and the Internet went nuts once more but in a totally different way, me posting about it on stories and people I knew (not Sonic fans, either) reaching out to gush about how cute he looked now and how happy they were for this classic videogame character, an icon on his own right, getting to properly take a shot with a movie adaptation. I am certain that many people, like me and friends back then, went to see this film in theaters out of genuine love for what Sonic represents, even when most of us weren't as familiar with him outside of the memes and his conflicting reputation. We WANTED this movie to success. That being said, I adore this little critter 💙 Looking at this film through the lens of a Sonic fan now really puts into perspective how different his character is, and how the storytelling is handled in comparison to the games/shows/comics. I feel like the writers have, somehow, a higher level of freedom with their approach out of virtue of having to create a family film for everyone first and hardcore fans second, resulting in a quite endearing and *earnest* characterization of Sonic that we would likely never get now in other official media. For me, the best aspect of this franchise is its *heart* , something you could see present in most games and projects from the 90s and 2000s and being proudly incorporated by Sonic Team into their stories, earnest to the core no matter how outlandish or crazy things were in concept. I think the movies have that in spades; they don't shy away from anything. Sonic getting to be a highly expressive and emotional kid with a tragic and lonely origin story? go ahead. The movie near explicitly telling the audience that Sonic is finding a new family with Tom and Maddie? why sure, awesome! it's all so compelling and I can't help but be delighted by it. And it gets even better with the sequel, but I guess the time to talk about it will come later.

I say it a few times but I repeat it only because I mean it: I personally love how restrained the SCU has been, mainly because of the MCU; as much as I'd love a Full Dive Sonic Movie I think dumping a bunch of characters from the games without any setup or time to breath would feel way too forced, I think building the world from movie to movie is better. Actually, the sonic movie was in development hell for the longest time. Back when SatAM was still RELEVANT and they wanted to do a time travel story called Sonic Epoch. Few years have passed and there's more material to work with and people actually gave a shit enough to let legendary stars such as Jim Carrey, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves go full ham on these characters, bringing them to life.

More and more I've come around to the idea of not having all of these game elements in the movies, particularly the music. Especially after watching the Mario movie. The surprise of "Oh, that's the Bowser's Fury/Mario Kart 8/Whatever" theme got old after a while. To skip ahead to the second movie, the music that plays when Super Sonic shows up really sells the moment as this grandiose thing, like a GOD is being born. I feel like it would have undercut the moment if we just started hearing an orchestral remix of the Sonic 2 super theme.

At first thought it was enjoyable enough but over time generally really liked watching this film. I do dig the whole he runs so fast he builds up kinetic energy and gets electric zapping out. Both Sonic and Eggman were great and the human characters are actually enjoyable. I think the first movie really suffers from the same symptom that a lot of video game movies in their first iteration have to deal with, having to introduce such a rich and decades long universe of characters and landscapes that it just doesn't have much time for anything else. Same thing that happened with the Mario movie, because we spend so much time on learning about just Sonic's personality and worldview that fans of the franchise already know of. Due to this all we can get out of true "Sonic-esque" moments mostly come from either Eggman cutaways or the short action sequence that happens literally at the end of the movie. Actual interactions and events between these beloved characters are too far between, which in of itself is why the sequel receives much more praise for doing the exact opposite of this. It's a good movie that thankfully, as you said, shows a turning point for the franchise as a whole, but with how much more Sonic stuff we keep seeming to get in Sonic 3, it's easy to look back on this first movie as a rocky and safe start to a very successful turnaround.

Call me crazy, but I actually like this film more than Movie 2. Sure, it feels less like a Sonic Movie and the sequel is a better SONIC Movie, but in terms of an actual film, this one is better in terms of pacing and arguably characters. Movie 1 is definitely a by the number film of a buddy cop road trip film, something we have seen for years, but it does have some thing that even future vide game adaptation doesn't have despite follow more of the source material.

The first movie is a 6.5 out of 10 score for me, it's just ok. Meanwhile the 2nd movie is definitely an 8 out of 10

Like the review, I never watched it personally, never cared too. I just saw both movies through reactors and I agree, the movies saved Sonic so much. I never hated a try at "Sonic grows up INTO his game personality only a bit more family focused" its a new angle that no one really did. But Fadel...Gamescage...my Sonictuber from another mother... I need that reaction to the Wrath of Nazo anitmatic part 2 O_O

Wait I don't understand, I respect your opinion but how was sonic 2 bad for you, it may be a bit rushed storywise and the wedding scene but everything else was great, it was a step up and upgrade generally, we even got Super Sonic in the movie alongside with Knuckles & Tails, imo it was amazing!
