Comic Drake Actually, the comics are a separate continuity, and yes that was confirmed by IDW and the team before the first issue released. The events of Sonic Forces did happen in this continuity, however.

I'm a fan of both the main and Archie continuities. Archie had its ups and downs like all series, but I was genuinely interested, and I'm still kinda sad we aren't getting the rest of Lost Hedgehog Tales for the time being (though I'm so happy Ian is continuing to write for Sonic). Are there any good communities out there that still discuss the old book? I was always kinda alone in my love for them, but it still runs through my head sometimes.

Fun fact Whisper was designed by Evan Stanley. A long time sonic fan who runs her own fan comic on DA. Team Sonic Comic (which is the unoffical collective name of the people behind the sonic comics) really enjoy her work even back in the archie days. To the point where they let her pen one of the Sonic Universe side comics. Now that they are at IDW she is being brought in more and more often and most likely she will be getting a job with the team after she graduates college.

Because it has the same creative team under Ian Flynn without the years and years of baggage that came from the original comic run. Given the miracles Flynn worked disentangling the Gordian Knot that Penders left behind (before the whole universe had to reset) it's great to see him being able to just write stories without having to fix somebody else's mess.

They could use them but only if they extra, they didnt want to, so they had the remaining writers do a crisis do over and wiped out all of Ken Penders sonic characters. I'm still sad about the archie situation. So many aborted story arcs thanks to Penders/Sega, so many characters I really, really liked being thrown away, so much continuity tossed away...it's pretty depressing as a huge fan of the archie sonic universe and cast :( While I am interested in this new series,it just isn't the same, and that will always make me feel pretty sad. I at least hope they do what archie did: make eggman both funny AND legitimately threatening.

@@indigorose6527 Ken Penders is an infamous artist who worked on the Archie Sonic series for a long time. He's a terrible writer as well pretty much responsible for that series' OC problem. Archie lost his contract and that allowed him to trademark a number of "characters", which lead to a big legal dispute and the eventual reboot. His "characters" are now in his own book (with examples of its horrible artwork being present in the video). He also tried to sue Sega and EA over Sonic the Dark Brotherhood (a game developed by Bioware before EA bought them) and failed. Twice.

Ice Climber ooh yeaah. One of the reasons I couldn't get into the Archie comics was some of the art i found unappealing. It may seem silly but I have an artistic eye, so i prefer to read something that appeals to it. This also applies when reading the story as well. I was just so overwhelmed with all of the characters in Archie comics that i could no longer keep up. I actually somewhat enjoy most of the newer art and story in the IDW comics. It actually allowed me to grow on the wisp more and appreciate what tried (and unfortunately failed somewhat) in sonic forces.

The great think about the IDW comics is that they are basically the last years of Archie Sonic, even with the same main writer, but without having the weight of an extremely long story with a really complicated and bizarre world and the mistakes of...some people...during the earlier years that inevitably affected the comic. This is a completly fresh start where all the events before Sonic Forces happen, making it easier to follow than a completly different world with character you've never seen before.

Yeah, the IDW series has been really good so far. I'm still upset that the Archie series and a lot of the lore and the characters connected to it are gone now, but the new series does help a bit. If only they(IDW) could somehow get the rights to the Archie characters like Sally, Rotor, Bunny, Nicole and the others and bring them over, but I know that'll never happen.

The freedom fights were created for a cartoon and appeared in the comics, but other than that have not appeared in ANY official sega games or otherwise and I'm pretty sure technically SEGA doesn't own them. @@TGHunter The rights for the Archie Freedom Fighters probably have a ton of legal issues to go through to get, considering the were originally made for a cartoon and then used by the Archie comic for 20+ years. And that's ignoring the fact that Sega didn't like the Archie comic, and probably it's characters with it, a lot because of how much it diverged from the games. I think they wanted the comic to solely advertise whatever game was new at the time, not even caring that a good comic that can stand on it's own right promotes the series far better than a glorified ad for an individual game at a time. Fortunately the IDW comic has been pretty good so far, but if it goes that way I can see it dragging the series down.

As a longtime fan of the Archie Sonic comics, I find IDW's Sonic to be really good in exactly the ways I expected it to be when I learned it has the same creative team. One part of that is how they handle references to the source material. As a treat to fans, they'll often use a snippet of dialogue taken directly from one of the games (or another previous adaptation). It would be easy for that sort of thing to feel jarring, but I think they do a very good job of only using lines that still work just as well in their new context, too. I never get the feeling that someone unfamiliar with a quote's origin would still recognize it AS a quote. When a reference is done poorly, you can tell it must be a reference even if you're unfamiliar with the source, because it sticks out from its new context. You think to yourself, "that phrasing felt awkward. Must be a reference to something." IDW Sonic does references very well--for example, as Drake says, the story of the comics is still just as good if you assume the war was never shown, or know it refers to Sonic Forces but haven't played that game. (Yes, I read the pinned comment, I know it's already been pointed out that Drake was mistaken about this. What's important for my point is that making that mistake in no way harmed his enjoyment of the comics, which I think reflects very well on said comic series. It stands alone perfectly well, and if you do get the references, that's a bonus, not a requirement for entry.)

I was a pretty avid reader of Archie Sonic and Mega Man, and it was pretty obvious that Capcom wasn't too particular about Mega Man's portrayal, letting him have much more nuanced character development and having more relatable insecurities. I personally love this comic. It has all the orginal game charchters in it, new charchters that are not showing up every 2 seconds and I love the designs for them. I have seen some people moan about the artsyles of the comic, the fact that the freedom fighters are not in it and Ian flynn being on the team and I have actually seen someone wanting Ken Penders to work on it instead. Wut lol. Finally, I know I am going to get a lot of hate for this but I don't want the freedom fighters to apper in the new comic. Let them remain at peace please.

I loved Archie Sonic the Hedgehog series, both before and after the soft reboot; though they'd be better as separate continuities. I have heard the UK Fleetway Sonic the Comic series is quite good as well. Archie's series is by FAR my favorite, though it doesn't get good until around comic 50; my opinion of course. IDW Sonic the Hedgehog is also really good, strong start. Not what I wanted, but it is still good. With Sonic being "older" now, it isn't as easy to do your own backstory and characters to build your own world of Sonic. I love having lots of characters, with deep story. Starting from a recent video game creates some limits for their world building, but it is also more appealing to the majority. I suggest reading Archie's Sonic, but trudge through the first 20 for the first few. Same with Fleetway's, but I am still working on the that one. You know, it really is interesting to see how Sonic is one of the few videogame characters that it's succesfully adapted into media outside games, sure there are major miss-steps but there are some mayor gems, like the comics. And IDW continues that, I just hope to see the Freedom Fighters sooner rather than later PS: Come on Scourge was a good character!

It's great to hear from people like you that haven't really read the Archie book that much (R.I.P it shall be forever missed) and are really digging the new IDW book. The IDW book far really does feel like an expanded universe companion book to the games. I can't wait what awaits us next year with this book. . . . Also do check out Sonic Boom. It's a really good show, especially season 2.

I would say these comics are pretty great in terms of art and character design. The story is admittedly odd, but IDW is world building right now like they do with their other comics so I’m waiting to see what happens. I also know IDW is not conservative with the use of old characters so who knows what villains or heroes will appear again?

I love the new series already and it doesn't surprise me that's it's good. Ian Flynn was given a continuaty that was a real shitshow after Penders. He gave the world focus and scope. His writing was so good that an entire series that had very little Sonic in it was a good series Sonic Universe. He wrote Sonic as a true hero someone who could inspire. Now he has a chance to create something from the ground up without the limitations placed on him by the previous lore or lawsuit. He is truly free to be as creative as he wants and it shows the very first few issues.

The reason why most original fans are not big fans of the IDW comic don't like it because it seems to miss why they liked it. the original series had a sense of grit, plot twists that you would NEVER see coming and original characters who while not super in depth had enough depth for you to like or even relate to them. The new comics feel like they are supposed to be super bouncy, cartoony fights. I don't feel like they are in any danger when fighting eggman's bots. Yes they could deal with SWAT-butts (callback) fairly easily but characters were often caught or hurt by these bots and it surprised everyone. My favorite Arc in the Archie comics was when Princess Sally was "killed" (not really, spoilers) and you had to watch as all of sonic's friends felt truly betrayed by him and watch Sonic be genuinely scared and terrified at the sight of his oldest friend and often love interest "dead" and at his hands! With no explanation why Sonic would do this and Sonic himself having a memory lapse of the events during Sally's death day he is captured and passed judgement on by the knothole court. Sonic escapes and is on the run from Geoffrey St. John (my personal favorite character) who is feverishly chasing him and closing in. Also It was known in the comics that sonic was the main character yes, but all the other characters had healthy developing personalities and did things on their own (i.e. Tails leaving knothole to tough it out on an island and meeting Fiona, future love interest [kind of, you'll see] and characters finding out on their own that sonic did not kill sally in the previously mentioned arc, creating a whole other mystery for you to find out). The reason why I can't really get into the new series is because its missing those features. not to mention a lot of people liked how it felt like an actual jungle/ other fantasy land and not a clear "this could only be in a video game" landscape. there were no loop de loop hills, or weird out of place palm trees. There was a swamp, a massive MASSIVE forest, an australian type Desert, A jungle, the floating island was actually a really really cool locale that had an amazing history that Ken penders (idiot of the century award) straight up destroyed because he got greedy and lazy. The original comics felt like an actual adventure novel with real consequences and actual villains. It will forever be underappreciated but i think that is okay because that just means people who do find it amazing will enjoy it even more :)

The classic Archie comics are still around, but a few modernizations were really needed seeing how the Sonic and Mega Man comics were the only things keeping the publisher alive and now they lost the licenses for obvious reasons. The Cosmo reboot is pretty underrated if you ask me, not a lot of people ever talk about the fact that Archie brought back a rather obscure character.
