This is a solid Western film that offers a classic tale of family, revenge, and redemption. Good review.

Much to my embarrassment, I remember precious little of this film, having seen it with my father as a young boy. I saw an interview with John Wayne on TV, years later, when he explained he had just survived a bout of cancer prior to the filming of the movie. He shot it after having a lung removed, which tends to make one much more susceptible to colds, flues, and pneumonia. I doubt insurance would allow an actor to do so today. But things were a lot more loose and injuries were much more common on the older films. Similarly, I don't think a movie like Fitzcarraldo could be filmed today, not only because of the insanity of the shoot, but also because of the insanity of Klaus Kinski, who would likely find himself locked away for his near continuous string of assaults on just about anyone who happened to be in swinging distance. Also, if memory serves, this movie was actually based on a true story, from a book about a family living in the West plagued by violence. I can't say how close one was to the other, as I haven't read it. I don't know if you've heard the song of the same name, by Johnny Cash. It's a little different from many of his songs, as it was written for him by Bernstein, who also scored the film. For some reason it didn't make the cut of the movie, even though the lyrics, more or less, recount the film. Great review as always, Orlando! This is another one I need to go back and revisit.
