I am not sure how Sigma is keeping the Sony APS-C alive since they only have 12 APS-C e-mount lens, 19 if you count the e-mount full frame. Where Sony has also 19 APS-C e-mount and if you count the full frame e-mount you can double that number. That said, I think I would agree Sony adds a lot of little features most will not use that jack the price up. Sigma is for sure a good alternative to Sony. Tamron has a APS-C 17-28mm F/2.8 for $879, that gives you an extra $520 for a good prime. ;-) But it is nice that the Sony has such a wide focal range with the constant F/2.8 for a pretty good all purpose travel lens. That seems like a fair value.

The tariffs effectively make it more expensive for US companies to import certain goods (in this case, electronics) from China. That increased cost is eventually passed down to the US consumer since companies will not let their baselines / profits be impacted.

I guess what brings the value is the wider range at a constant F2.8. I think this would make a great all purpose travel lens. For a travel camera and the person who is just an avid photographer I think ASP-C is great. Packing small is always better over lugging bags of equipment.

Hi Jason. Love your videos. I wasn't that in love with my Zeiss F4 and didn't use it at all. I found myself using my 35mm 1.8 lens because of the aperture. Literally couldn't sleep because of it. So I went back to the store today and luckily was able to exchange my Zeiss for this G lens (with additional money spent of course). It is a big canon, but I'm in love with it already!! You guys are missing the point. Small size and weight - APSC plus G quality optics & weathersealed. If you dont' care about portability/compactness then go FF. But for kids, family, & travel this is the price you have to pay for compactness AND quality!. Look at fujifilm's 16-55 / 2.8. After three years, it's still $1200 - and NOT stabilized! Sony is merely matching the market. If fuji can sell expensive APSC lenses...why not Sony? I think many of your expectations are out of whack with reality.

Ultimate Luck Again, the point is Sony’s lens is NEW. After 2-3 years it may be discounted as well. You can’t compare a new lens to one that’s been in the market for years. You guys need to have some sense of perspective. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. The price will come down, but if you want it now, that’s the list price now. It’s basic product management. And Sony is masterful at that.

For me since i primarily am a musik producer, the production of a making of and possible the video of the first single is kind of expected of most indie labels. And then i have to film a whole band i like to get some different flavors, that goes for Cameras and kenses too, thats why i have the Sony A 6600, the A 7 C, the Lumix S 5 and yes the Canon R 5 bc the natural colors you get with this camera are just mindblowing and sets it apart from the more steril A 7 S III. Of course you could argue while blending the fottage with the recorded video i could color grade the A 7 S III to look like the Canon, but i honestly don’t have the time for unnecessary color grading then i am pushing already nost days a 16 hour work day, and thats why i try to cut as much as unnecessary work from my daily schedule. And yes the A 6600 paired with the 16/55 G master lens is simply killer, i truly love the combo of both of them

Nice video dude. This lens would have been perfect, but no OSS and a price tag over £1000, might as well save for full frame. I don't think Sony was thinking about its core audience. As a crop sensor camera user, lenses over £500 are a no no. Don't get me wrong, so cool to see this, hope it works well for video. But this will be a hit in 5 years time probably, for now, its a wasted opportunity.

The main reason I went with Sony in the first place was to get the lightest package a "DSLR-quality" camera could achieve. Now with my obsolete α5100 and my 18-105mm f4, I'm super happy. But seeing the α6600 and the 16-55mm being announced made me go back to my first love: low-light versatility. Since I went to search in-depth for Sony's camera system, I've heard the praises for the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, so I wanted that lens at first. But knowing that it cannot cover the wide end on APS-C (which is the only system I could afford as a broke college student), I hesitated on it and went instead with the Sony 18-105mm f4 (thanks to my Dad). But now that I'm earning on photography, I'm absolutely getting the 16-55mm f2.8 and the α5100, and no one may stop me.

Thanks for sharing your story! 18-105mm is still a heavy hitter! You can still consider it and maybe throw in a few primes instead of going for the 16-55 G Lens unless you just a one and done lens.

@@JasonVong I like being a one and done guy lol. Yes, I like having a prime or two in my bag for that super clean and super sharp low-light output, but I like versatility more than anything. So after having the 16-55mm f2.8 in the future, I want to buy the Sigma 30mm f1.4. That's next in line. Btw, people always tell me to go for primes after my 18-105mm. But hey, this was a second option to the then-fabled 24-70mm equiv lens. Oh, and the 18-105mm is a perfect lens for events work. Boi, I could talk all day about this lens. Of course I started in the business when I had film in my camera. So no ibis no auto focus. I have the a6400 and if I am doing a video I use a tripod or monopod. With all the equipment we have at our disposal these days I love it. Would have loved to have had this kind of equipment back when I started. We live in exciting times and so much equipment we can choose from. So while everyone is debating over this I am out taking pictures. I agree price is a factor. Even while running my business I didn’t buy a ton of lenses or cameras. I used Nikon D200 and D300. Comparing this combo with a 24-70GM or tamron 28-74 is nice, but I hear fullframe users saying all the time that the Zeiss 24-70 f/4 would be the right comparison to the 16-55G f/2.8 because it's comparable in terms of DOF AND fastness (due to the better ISO performance of FF) and then there is no real weight and price advantage of the APS-C solution anymore. Although I doubt that it's on the same image quality level as the excellent 16-55G.

I am quite happy with my 28-75mm Tamron on my A6600. Since I shoot mostly people - the 42mm equivalent short side is wide enough while the 112.5mm long end is absolutely great! Since I can also use the Tamron on my A7iii body, I get an extra bang for my buck...

I'd totally pick up this lens if it had image stabilization, but since I'm still shooting with an a6000, I need the OSS from the 16-70 f/4. But! I might pick this up along with the a7iii or a6600 for my girlfriend. Haven't decided yet.

If it makes the lens heavier, then I'm ok they left OSS out. IBIS has been doing a good job replacing the need to get OSS lenses but IBIS has to become a default thing imo. Hopefully in the near future that feature doesn't have a $500 mark up

@@JasonVong I agree that IBIS should be standard, like it is on Olympus cameras. I don't, however, understand SONY's reasoning in not including OSS on the 16-55 when 2 of the last 3 APS-C cameras they released don't include IBIS !! It really limits the usefulness of the lens for the bulk of existing A6xxxx owners (those not owning an a6500). Sends mixed messages. Would have been more consistent to release all the new cameras with IBIS or to have released both of the new lenses with OSS.

i'll go to full frame lens whenever i can. I do this since I was still using Nikon APSC. The glass quality don't lie, and it's a good investment if you ever think to move up to FF camera body. and now being FF user, there's a point that you can't look back. especially in sharpness and low ISO performance.

I just got one for use on my a6500 and promptly returned it. The vignette at 16mm is huge - complete with black corners in RAW. The jpegs have black corners too. Also, there is no Lightroom lens profile yet. So to correct for it you have to crop. I am very disappointed.

I opted for the A7iii and Tamron 28-75mm lens instead of the A6600 and 16-55mm OSS lens. However, the 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 lens is tweaking my interest, I think it would be a nice combination with my A6400 to shoot in tandem with the A7iii and Tamron lens... I wish it had an f/5.6 at least aperture at the longest focal length but, I can live with f/6.3 at that weight and reach. A thousand bucks isn't too bad if the lens is as good as Sony is touting...

I'll probably bite the bullet and get the a6600 and the 16-35 2.8. Definitely expensive, but this combo will be all I need for quite a while. I love the light weight of APS-C, and the image quality is great. I need to upgrade my a6000 and Sony Zeiss 16-70 4.0, so this is pretty easy for me. I can stop carrying my 35mm 1.8 for indoor work, since the new zoom will be fast enough. For making panoramas, I will continue using my 55mm 1.8, and I can get by with just two lenses for landscape work. I don't know if I will ever go full frame.

Their competitor fuji has the excellent 16-55 2.8 selling for alot less and even their 18-55 2.8-4 is amazing for the price of 200 when buying the bundle. I have not been waiting for any lens that costs $1400. If it had OSS, a bit longer zoom range like 16-70, and were less gigantic, then it might be worth considering, because then it means that maybe you don't have to buy a set of primes or something. Think I would rather have a nice compact OSS zoom for a fraction of this, a longer zoom at f4, and a prime all for the same $1400 or less. The whole lens situation with Sony a6 cameras (holes in the lineup, outrageous prices on the better glass) makes me want to switch to Fuji.
