UPDATE: I didn't know about picture profiles when making this video, setting it to "portrait" with all the values to the minimum offers much more room to color grade and pushes a little more dynamic range out of the camera. But the bitrate (idk if that's the right term) recorded is fairly low, so a basic contrast adjustment with a fairly conservative grade is pretty much as far as you can push it. I'd keep the saturation untouched and lower the contrast as far as possible. A lot of the problems can be solved for ~$50 USD, a cage for the shoe mount, capture card and a phone mount for a larger/more articulate-able monitor and audio recorder. There are tutorials online on using a capture card with a phone. I also have the NEX 6, the autofocus is a lot better but I still use a manual lens on it most of the time. I didn't expect to use Playmemories as little as I did, the only upgrade I'd really consider would be going to the NEX 7 for the higher resolution. The B roll at the beginning is awesome, the only thing I'd do differently (if possible ofc) is bump the framerate a bit so when you slow your footage down, it's smoother. Other than that though, great video! I love the videography!

I just bought one for 120usd with the kit lens, 55-200 mm lens, 4 batteries, a charger, a Lowepro bag, manuals, thick guide book, Sony flash, led lamp, hot shoe mount, clamp, and official remote. Pretty solid little camera. I couldn't say no at the price. The only bummer is the touch screen doesn't work on mine. Replacements are cheap and the instructions on Ifixit don't seem too tough

I bought this camera new in 2012 and have taken many thousands of images with it. But, the vid footage is just OK for 1080p, and only if on a tripod. The thing is, though, stills are surprisingly excellent with the 18-55 OSS kit lens - it really is one of the best kit lenses of that era like the Fujifilm 18-55. Pairing it with E-mount adaptor/charity shop Pentax lenses (Fotodiox - PK-NEX), the images are brilliantly sharp over 250th. Downsides are the poor screen, the horrible menu and the awful jog dial and buttons - easy to press but easy to set to a different function/value unwittingly. Having looked better at the comments now, many seem to have the same experience, but still love it!

Get the 5R or 5T. The hybrid phase/contrast detect autofocus holds up much better than the contrast detect only on the older nex 5 models. The additional control wheel is also a massive plus.

I bought my NEX 5N in 2012. I have the mic, flash mount, several lenses, and the camera is still amazing. My cons are the menus. they are too convoluted and take time to set up. If you need to adjust for a quick photo opportunity forget. What pisses me off is the limit of 30 minutes for recording. I read somewhere that this was implemented to differentiate a camera of a camcorder that for some reason is taxed in Europe in different ways. I don't know if this is true. To summarize, even with the cons, the pros even after 10 years still make this camera a good deal. The only thing I miss because back in the day when I bought the camera the money was getting short is to not have a macro lens. Thanks for the video making a new review on the camera.

I've also heard that the 30min record limit is an artificial limit for tax reasons, and if you have a wifi-enabled NEX model (so not the 5n), you can disable the record limit with a sideloaded app. If you have controls and the custom menu setup right in your camera, you don't really need to spend too much time in the menus.

I might, but here's the rundown: quality settings to the max, and as for picture profiles, decrease sharpness all the way, -2 contrast, -2 saturation. Also shoot on all manual controls to squeeze every last drop out

For just a little more money go for the nex 6. Hotshoe. No overheating (or clicking) in video. Built in flash. Viewfinder (better than the one in the a6000). More dials so less menu diving.

I have the NEX-6, wouldn't say it's a worthy upgrade in terms of image quality but for the whole user experience, it's much better.

My phone takes 4k video, but I will use the camera 99.9% of the time as resolution doesn't really matter (to an extent)

It should record 60p/50p depending on the region. There should be one option in the middle of the video quality selection menu that is named "60p 28M (PS)" that records 1080 60p. Hopefully this helps!

Unfortunately not. The 5n doesn't have app support, so the record time hack will not work. The 5r/t have wifi and app support, so they will allow the hack.

I actually snag a nex 5n for a 120 canadian in my area with a few accessories. I was originally spending my money on a canon m50 mk II or a used a6000 but i thought to myself, if i dont get in to a hobby id be wasting money on expensive camera and 120 dollars isnt a big deal. Been enjoying the camera though. Ive only been mostly using it for photography. Im saving up for a dedicated video camera but it ill probably take quite a while hahhaha

That's a pretty good deal! I wouldn't recommend a dedicated video camera unless you're going for something towards the cinema camera end of the spectrum.

@@easun got a friend that has 5n and 5t he said that the 5n produced the best image out of the two 5t just has faster auto focus as well as wifi capabilities. Ive been using the 5n quite alot lately and you can force focus at a thing really fast when you lightly hold the shutter button. Probably faster on the 5t but the 5n is fast enought for me. Anyways ill probably upgrade to one of the a6000 series if i get one pretty cheap. Dont know about the 5r though

Need some help with my nex 5n. Havent used it in a while. WHen i did, somehow it got stuck to focus mode. The screen displays whatever scene the lens is aimed at, nothing else. Buttons no longer work, no words or numbers displayed on screen, even the off switch doesnt work. Only way to shut it down is removing the battery. Once you put battery back, and switch it on, same problem. Ive tried putting a new battery, didnt help. Thanks to anyone who can help me resolve the issue.

I have this camera with 18-55 sel kit lens... u will be amazed if u put a sigma 30mm or35mm 1.4 lens on it.. they cost more than the camera body but they do all the work

for me Nex series or A5xxx or the A6000 are easily the best/budget wise you can get with videos WITH interchangeable lens system(if you dont mind the colour tinge)... any of the old DSLR just dont look rite to me... even the Canon EOS M which many people claims to be great is not really, people are overhyping the MagicLantern mod for it and unlimited recording...while it may "enable" ultra high bitrate but theres no much data captured into those "high bitrate" videos... you can see it when people post their EOS M video there are artifacting anyways... a Sony A5100 is way better imo in real life.... with the old m43 system camera and fuji mirrorless they look bad too as well with stuff like demoire effects...

I think the eos m's ML raw does provide a leg up from the normal video quality but I haven't tried it personally so I don't have much more to say on that; my issue with the eos m is the lens mount, as there are next to no good native lenses for it. I've been considering old Fuji mirrorless cameras (xt-1 era) for their color science and stills quality, but I don't think I'll ever use them for video as morie happens too much unless in extremely controlled conditions.

I don´t think so. You can get an M100 for 180usd with kit lens, then buy an EF adapter for 25usd and you have the largest collection of good cheap lenses with good dual pixel autofocus, better photography than Sony at same price, better colors, better video autofocus, etc. If you want something similar with Sony is pricier. I have Canon and two Sony Nex and the autofocus in the Sony is not good. The a6000 is the first Sony with good AF but is pricier than M100, near the M50 and the M100 and M50 are far better for photography
