Just to summarize the main issue, the overheating started happening when I connected a phone/iPad to the camera with the Creator app and used that as a monitor while shooting. I LOVE this feature but at this rate feels unusable. If you have the ZV-E1 have you tried it with the app and/or 4k60 running? I'd love to know if it quickly overheats for you too.

I have had the ZV-E1 overheat just using Ecamm Live Pro without recording internally and when it wasn't in use. The secret to logevity for the cameras are two things, 1)The Air has to be moving to remove the heat from the camera, Ceiling Fan, Basic fan blowing on the camera, Ulanzi fan works. 2)Dummy Batteries for the camera. This way the charging and discharging of the Z100 battery in the long run doesn't disipate battery life when you go on a shoot. Another secret is do not get rid of the battery that doesn't charge any more. Put a tape to mark the battery as BAD but still keep it in the camera. If it isn't completely discharged you can plug in the USB-C plug to keep the camera going while in the studio. I sometimes use my Sony 4K camcorder that has a bad battery that will not keep a charge but you plug in the power to it and works perfectly. Cheers!

Thanks for the tips. I think the Sony Creator app is a real guilty culprit here when it comes to the heat also. I'll have to run more tests. Hopefully moving air will really help.@@randallbrander8157

Here's the thing, I've been researching the ZV-E1, A7S III AND FX3 for days now, days. And I keep getting somewhat swayed towards each camera but here at the end of the research I feel like if you can afford it, and you want to take your filming a bit more serious, you just gotta bite the bullet and get the FX3. The reasons why: 1. The A7S III though a great camera is going on 4 years old now; there's to many rumours about the A7S IV coming out soon. That's gonna drop the price down on the A7S III big time and so buying it now at it's current price you might get a bit ripped off. Also, software updates, they are just not there for filmmaking like in the FX3 or the ZV-E1. 2. The ZV-E1 overheating, as one other camera guy put it, I forget his name, they put a Ferrari engine in a civic body. Maybe it doesn't matter for some until you realise you wanna shoot longer stuff at 4k 60 and don't forget, as it heats up, it affects the sensor and low light footage gets more noise and the memory card gets scary hot, like "is it gonna damage it" hot. 3. Yes the FX3 is expensive but, it doesn't seem to be loosing it's value, you can probably resell it a few years from now for close to the same price if you decide that you're not as serious about making videos. And you get that MIC handle, which is expensive on it's own. But now you got a proper camera, with the ability to attach quality mics, that is dependable (will never overheat) and is getting upgrades from Sony on the regular and does the job, every time. 4. I think basically, you get what you pay for and quality costs more so the real question is what can you afford for now, and how serious do you want to take your filmmaking 🤷‍♂

Yeah I'm kind of there with you man. I'd love to play around with the FX3. I found a decent deal on the A7siii but like you said, it's a few years old. And when you spend that kind of money you want to be really happy with your purchase! What camera do you have/plan on getting?
@PocketAmbience
@PocketAmbience 11 ай бұрын
"when you spend that kind of money you want to be really happy with your purchase!" Exactly, and you have to ask yourself, yeah I can save maybe 30% off from the more expansive camera (at least for the A7S III vs the FX3) but then your also only 30% away from getting what you know you really want; well, at least for me that was my thinking. So I'm gonna get the FX3 man, it's the final point of escalation for everything I want; the ZV-E1 and the A7S III are close, but both require compromises in one way or another. It's gonna be a huge upgrade for me, I've mostly only filmed cycling videos on a GoPro (they're up here on my channel if you wanna see cycling in Australia lol) and some stuff on the ZV-E10 (which is a great APS-C CAMERA by the way). But I'm excited to get it and to really start creating some great content with it, especially low-light stuff. Moreover, another aspect of the more expensive choice - by spending that much on the camera, I am now obligated to use it ;)@@thesahdstudio

@PocketAmbience 11 ай бұрын
Honestly, no I'm not. Yes I made the argument that a downside of the A7S III is it's 4 years old, so the FX3 being 3 years old you could perhaps make the same association. However, the FX3 just got a bunch of updates, it's been getting updates regularly and Sony keeps pushing it and the Cinema line of cameras it's a member of and it was used to film a Hollywood movie (The Creator) and that movie looked great, visually. It's a proven camera, it's gonna be relevant for years, and Sony is supporting it. Plus, no real rumour of an FX3 II coming out anytime soon. Where as the A7S III has been forgotten software wise until recently where it will get a few basic updates in March 2024, likely because everyone complained about it. And as mentioned, loads of Rumours abound about the A7S IV. I think at the end of the day, all 3 (ZV-E1, A7S III and FX3) are great cameras visually but ironically, it isn't just about the sensor, the bodies really do matter in real world situations, so I guess where do you want to compromise, you know. Or do you not want to compromise at all and get the best (FX3) lol. Anyhow, all food for thought; I literally just ordered my FX3, I'm so psyched man, got a nice Sony 20mm f 1.8 G prime to go with it, I can't wait to get some low light footage :)@@thesahdstudio

I love my ZVE1 apart from I’m having hot pixels appearing on it all the time. This only shows in dark environments on high ISOs. The pixel mapping which runs all the time (Sony knows it does this) gets rid of it, but it can appear mid shoot. I have sent it back for evaluation. I would suggest you all check yours, let it warm up a bit then take it into really low light. Then watch the film on a monitor, hot white pixels may appear ruining the footage. I’ve had no issues with focus, I don’t shoot on 60 though it’s either 30 or 120 but I don’t have it overheat as I don’t do really long shots. Get the Ulanzi fan I think mine was like £20 but I’ve never actually used it. Try changing the focus point to centre, the wide focusing can get confused when there’s no person, animal etc in the frame.

I do love it too. And to be fair, I've only really had issues since I started using the Creator app during shooting... I'd be curious if that happens to others. I think that's the real problem so I just need to not have that running. I think the camera just has TOO much horsepower for it's own good, like a Ferrari engine in a Honda Civic body... as long as I go back to using it where it shines without going over, it's fine. I just got excited using the new features.

So, just a quick correction: ZVE1 is *not* made to shoot long-form 4k @60p. You really should reconsider using a fan. Tilta make a cage to which you can attach a fan they made specifically for the ZVE1; it requires an external power source (USB-c), but it works really well, per multiple videos on the subject. It's really elegant-looking as well. Yeah, it's more money, but it's either another 100-200 CND or you poney up the cash for an FX3 (a camera that is now 3 years old, btw --don't drop 6k on that).
@thesahdstudio

I'm skeptical a fan would keep it cool while using the Creator app. I haven't had a chance yet but I'm going to do some more testing (right now actually!) and see. I just, I don't want to have a camera where I have to open the doors on it to shoot. I don't want to have to buy a fan and HOPE that it works. But like you said, the alternative costs an arm and a leg for something that is a little long in the tooth. I think for now I will just adjust my workflow within what the zv-e1 is capable of. It's a great camera still, I do love it... but am just starting to see its limits. Not a huge deal. And like you said, a fan would probably be sufficient. But my old workflow was fine so... I'm still comfortable with that. Do you think they'll upgrade the FX3? I know the a7siv is rumoured but I have ZERO use for a view finder... so what is that camera even for. Video MOSTLY with some photo? I guess that's why I'd lean towards the FX series...

Sadly, I gave up on the ZV-E1 back in December... sold it.. At the end, I realized I just wanted another A7S3. The price hasn't come down since launch but the ZV-E1's short comings are the exact result of the A7S3's image quality and video spec at a lower price point. The reliability on the A7S3 is what your paying for. That said, the A7S3 is getting an update soon and theres a bunch of used ones in great condition for around 2400-2800$ USD. If you're not opposed to buying used, Id recommend going that route. Back to the ZV-E1, it just stinks - spending all of that money on a camera, 2200$ (which is still ALOT of $$$) and only being able to use it "specific ways" to have it work reliably (most of the time).

For B-Roll I'd probably keep the lens in manual. This way you get not breathing, back of front focusing, miss focusing, etc. When you shoot in manual you just focus once (if you want) and move the camera and nail focus all the time. Or you can set your shot with a tripod and then be out of focus and then stop at your focus point. This is one reason so many film makers use vintage lenses. Not focus by wire, set focus distances, etc..

To be honest I haven't tried them all. I think it's pretty safe shooting at 24fps generally in any of them. Part of why I bought this camera is that I don't shoot long sessions... so my only real tests were me doing it for this video. I think the answer is the codec in which is has to compress the least amount of information... so it might be safe to say XAVC-HS is the worst, XAVC-S is not so bad then SI is the easiest (but will be HUGE files).

This is indoors with no airflow. Even if not recording the A6700 hates using its HDMI port. Anyway today a fan arrived that clips into the back of it. Its not the ulanzi fan that sticks on, it is one that has to be powered by usb c and clips into a little frame that then clips in using the little clip that holds the screen shut on the camera. It is excellent and only cost me £30. It will solve your problem and as you do talking head stuff you, like me, wont need to worry about it needing to be powered with a usb c cable. The problem with the focus *in the shot you showed us* (if you had it somewhere else too I'd like to know since I'm about to buy a zv-e1!) seems due to the highlights in the background. I don't think I ever heard any KZbinr talking about this, but Sony's cameras (I had an a7iii and now an a7Rv) seem to have A LOT of problems focusing on subjects slightly darker than the background even if the subject is in the center of the frame

I can’t help you with cameras, and videos in the tech space all seem to be higher resolution and frame rate than the stuff creators do in my niche. But I will say that I probably watch the majority of videos on my phone as probably most people do. Mine is a iPhone 12 Pro Max. The KZbin app is on auto for quality. The footage looked stellar so I paused it to look at the settings. It was showing me your video in 720p 60. I switched it to the highest setting available 2160p 60 and the difference on a small screen is negligible. That probably doesn’t help you but I think the scene with the lighting you have dialed in and sound quality and especially the information and how it’s presented make a much more impactful difference then if it’s 60 or 30 fps or even 4K over 1080p for the majority of viewers.

I actually bought the ZVE1 because of your videos and the 60fps test you did on this channel! I personally love the artistic look of 60fps as well but if it doesn't work and messes up your work flow too much then using 30fps I think it's just a fine standard. For some reason 24fps when it's not a movie bothers me, I like the more personal 30fps+ for YT. At the end of the day I watch your channels over others because of your personality and that gets across to the viewers in both 30 and 60fps. As for downgrading tech but upgrading in price while keeping your workflow, I feel like it would just make sense to shoot at 30fps while sony releases their new cameras with this current tech. At least that's what I would do in your shoes. Im purely vlogging short burst clips so I haven't had any overheating issues yet, but I've recorded 15-20 min clips at H265 60fps without a monitor and without any problems. It tends to be pretty hot here in Phoenix AZ so I'm waiting for summer when im sure I'll have to start using 30fps. As for b-roll I haven't had any focus hunting issues that I can't pin on the minimum focus distance of the kit lens. Also, im not great with it and I don't shoot a lot of it so it's hard to tell but it doesn't hunt back and forth for me ever, it just stays slightly out of focus. Hope that helps man! Appreciate your content. Edit: I edit with an M2 apple chip so I havent had any issues using H265, and I heard that using a lower bitrate helps with overheating. H265 has the best quality for bitrate imo and youtube seems to compress h265 less after upload

That's great man, thanks for the comment. It does help. I'm always looking for excuses to buy and sell gear haha, so I'm not sure yet what I will do... but I appreciate the reminder that the personality and the story is what connects people over the quality. I'm sure you agree as a creator that we want the quality to reflect our ability and to inspire confidence in others who might want to work with us in the future... but the message trumps all. I took at look at your channel and the quality looks great man! If I can offer some advice (I'm sorry, I know you didn't ask... I'm more like my mom than I care to admit lol)... I like what you are doing but I think if you slightly focus your headlines/thumbs and your message to make your audience the hero of the story (instead of you) it might help you get more clicks, at least in the beginning. For example... You'll say 'I turned a terrible day around'. That's great for you, but maybe slightly shifting it for those watching might make it a little more clickable, e.g. 'How to turn a terrible day into a memorable one' or something that make people want to know what the answer is, you know? I think what you are doing is fine for when you have an audience it's just tough to build one that way. Like you said 'I made my mom cry' and again that's cute, but if no one knows who you or your mom is, no one will care. If it's 'how to make your mom cry happy tears' or something, maybe someone deep down wants to make their parents proud too and will want to see what the answer is. Just trying to think tank with you a bit... hopefully this doesn't come across the wrong way 👊 Keep it up brotha!

Buy the fx3. Those are studio cameras. The zve1 is a vlogging camera meant for 5-10 min clips at 4k 30p at most. 60p is good for mid slow motion which in the sense of vlogging would only be burst shots on a sequence.

Yeah good call. Feels like it's been out for a couple years now but I guess there isn't really many improvements you could make over it for what I would use it for anyway. I am very tired of the overheating at 4K 60. I'll keep my eyes peeled on some deals!

@@I_like_science Nice! Slick little setup. I'm always in "studio" mode so my 24mm f1.4 is quite the chonker. I never want to take it out of the house but then even time I see pictures with a good camera I think maybe I should. Maybe one of those lenses would get me out a bit more because I DO love photography.

I think Sony has done too good a job compensating for bad to design, more than enough for creators to change their process and buy cameras with inherent flaws that need work-arounds. And then the plethora of channels getting free cameras selling it as "no big deal" to the masses instead of just promoting the better options for not too much more cash in the grand scheme of things. All these latest overheating cameras...just Sony clearing out in stock and on hand components that were never really designed to work correctly together, but maximizes profits. Sure, that is a minority opinion and we could say you've maximized your use growing a channel with that camera. And plenty of folks still say they never had an issue, so that is excellent for them. Touche and all that. I just personally would save a little longer or buy a good stock used better camera that I wanted over something I have to schedule down time around.

I love this take! Yeah I thought I stumbled across the ultimate value camera which allowed me to cheat the highest quality possible at a price that was too good to be true. But like you said... there is a cost there. And now I finally realized that for myself. Sure I saved a few bucks but now I've lost time. And like you, I'd rather spend a few more bucks instead. Really appreciate the comment. I agree.

Oh I don't slow it down! That's a 60 fps timeline baby hehe. And honestly I didn't know the limitations before I bought it. My workflow has evolved and I have been learning as I go which is why I try and buy and sell used gear so I don't lose money along the way while upgrading while I need it. On my other channel I do a lot of b-roll and shooting in different locations. So it's not JUST for talking head shots... but yeah, I don't NEED to shoot in 60 fps. I just like it.

Dude 4k 60 is for action not talking head. It's not the camera... it's you. 4k 24 ideal. people accept720p. but after 4k 24 viewers arnt getting decisive differences to change perception of content much. Sound is way more important.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 7 ай бұрын
Hehe. For me, it's about the style... each frame rate (and even resolution) offers a different style that helps tell a different story. Sometimes I think 4k60 helps paint the best picture, other times, 24 is the way to go. I don't think there's right or wrong, it just depends on the look you want and what you're trying to do. That's cool you don't like 4k60 in all situations though, I get it. I generally don't like 24 myself but sometimes it's great.

@@thesahdstudio I get that. for me I realised: The law of diminishing returns... KZbin video is compressed. Is yr KZbin content art or information communication? 4k 60 processing will age your workstation quickly. The camera is optimised at content creation, but isn't 4k 60 really about Film-making? I suspect that's why it's overheating my friend. please consider that.
