This scene is the truest depiction of complicated marriages and family.
@janosmarothy54096 жыл бұрын
The scene plays off an (actual) generalization we see every day, namely a double standard about sleeping around: women are judged a lot more stringently than men. There's obviously sexual tension between Carmela and the priest but nothing ever actually happens. As a matter of fact, Carmela wouldn't even have the priest over in the first place if she didn't feel conflicted about Tony's serial adultery and criminal life, and of course, his inadequacies as a father and partner. Of course, she's too much of a moral coward herself to do anything about it and would rather be an unhappy but wealthy mob wife than to be independent but have a clean conscience. Otoh... Tony has a new mistress like every other episode and thinks nothing of it. The fact that Carmela's motivations are so knotted, but Tony just does what he wants and everybody else has to deal with the consequences (his underlings, his family, even many of mistresses...) says a lot not just about the characters but about a range of social relations in our society.
@SuperCosty20106 жыл бұрын
Well, she was at some risk revealing the info about priest, as long as Tony is not some ordinary nice guy husband. And given that it has really nothing happened, she was believable. If the priest really'd fucked her, she'd covered and denied everything, that were the best way. Otherwise both she and the priest were in danger. P.S. it was btw never revealed what she had with A.J.'s teacher till the series' end. Interesting how Tony would react to that.
@chrispap49576 жыл бұрын

he lied, about something that ultimately didnt matter. but he still lied. carmella told the truth, but was deceitful. the guy stayed the night, he was a priest and therefore bound to celibacy, but the lack of physical contact is doing so much work for them. the sexual tension, the emotional intimacy, it counts for something.

Incredible how absolutely different Tony and Carmella are here from the fatigued, resigned couple they ended up being in the last season. Tony's paranoia is just an small germ during these situations, and he even shows a bit of respect and fear of his wife when the psychiatrist's gender comes out. If this were a season 6 argument, Carmella would have thrown at least two "fucking this-fucking that" and Tony would have grabbed Carmella by her arms, and with a wicked smile on his face, he would have told her how she manipulates people like the priest in order to feel better about herself, because she knows she's a gold-digging wife with nothing to talk about, who stole the money from the bird-feeder.
