I studied Criminology and Tony hits the nail right on the head at 0:45, and destroys Meadow's theory of economic determinism and Tony actually speaks from experience as he's in the mafia. The cause is more cultural & environmental and social than anything else, African American being indoctrinated into gang/delinquent subculture due to the influences of the gangs and environments around them, but that is together with their marginalisation which can also make it a preferable choice. There are many marginalised African Americans though, in lower income brackets, who are hardworking and law abiding, in fact they are the majority. Meadow's theory predicts too much crime and ironically i think makes her racist as she thinks any African American in poverty turns to crime.
