I always thought Barb used her husband as an excuse in that scene because she doesnt want her mother living with them either. Just the way she pauses before saying "Tom wont allow it" and the way she looks at Tony when she delivers that line. Also she doesnt seem to mind her husbands position at all, so they probably both dont want Lidia staying with them. After all Barbara knows far better than her husband what kind of a person her mother is.

I could feel Janice's thirst for money the moment she arrived and her beef with Tony wasn't about him selling Livia's house but because Janice wanted the whole pie not just 'her cut' as Barbara put it. Janice see its as Tony and Barbara have money and are financially secure and she's not so she wants all proceeds from the house. Greed and money are Janice's weaknesses

@LoyaltyOverEveryting I don't think livia did any of that stuff though. Young livia was super mean but old livia most of the time the characters were being mean to her or using her. Of course she released the psychologist and also the capo meeting secrets but she definitely wasn't manipulating anyone or playing the victim afterwards she was just speaking her mind about how she felt about things and people took it out of proportion. I feel this is a criminally misunderstood character by the audience and other characters in the story.

@LoyaltyOverEveryting It's pretty stupid to assume what kind of parents I've had. Just because she once said tony should get shoes like Larry boys doesnt mean tony should be depressed and burn all his shoes that's the type of logic you're using. Carmela and Tony where insanely mean to her in fact she told Junion she didnt like "that talk" when junior used the word "stupid" and Tony half the time is yelling and cursing her after he put her in a nursing home. Who does that to their mother and tries to say their mother is the one that's heartless it's just hypocrisy. and Junior only used her to hear what he wanted to and get her into more trouble which ended in Tony losing all love for her and it wasnt her fault at all which is heartbreaking.

@@Argos-xb8ek You also gotta figure that she didn't have any real sibling rivalry to deal with. Janice was already a monster as young girl... just ask Junior. He left the house one night and his wallet was light. 10 years old, that girl. Janice and Tony seemed to have grown up during the most chaotic part of Livia and Johnny's marriage, as well as the height of Johnny's rise to power. I think by the time Barbara was a kid, Janice and Tony were basically grown ups and Johnny Soprano died when she was pretty young too. Gotta figure Livia was already kind of a nutter... add in Johnny's cheating, legal problems and the open violence that existed in those days and Livia is a full blown lunatic with some very bizarre parenting techniques. As far as we know, she was pretty mean and also played the kids off each other. Not to mention that Tony and Janice were nightmare kids anyway. I think by the time Barbara was growing up, she was the only young kid around and Livia wasn't quite as aggressive as she was in her prime. Barbara may have just been a less hostile child who learned to avoid Livia's wrath and just quietly go about being a good kid. She witnessed the tornado that was the Soprano family when she was young and had no admiration for the mob lifestyle and no ambition to compete for approval from a psychotic mother.

Nah, they moved far away from her; like in the godfather, casino, goodfellas, and every other piece of mob cinema; the irony of the mob family dream, which they all chased, Barbara had her eye on the actual show, The Sopranos was a show about a family, not a show about the mob, like most mob cinema; you’ll notice her eyes are often looking away or down; the only time she seems intrigued is when’s she’s looking at a family member, but their distracted with the fake mob cinema that they think is real, but is a facade to hide their actual pain.

That was the whole point of the Barbra character-she was born into New Jersey mafia royalty and made the conscious decision to not have any part in it except for the occasional family gatherings. She was so outside of the Family Business that even the FBI didn't bother to follow her or her husband. Had she been in the series more often, it would've defeated her character's purpose.

I believe that the older siblings somewhat served as shields from that Ma of theirs. When she was about to give in and let her come to her house despite what Tom said, Tony doesn't jump on the occasion to get rid of Livia, instead tell Barbara to not fall in the trap; even Janice who left at 18 probably took a lot more shit and broken glass in her water than Barbara did, but that doesn't diminish her merit of not becoming like other Soprano's.

Ugh. I love every aspect of the godfather except the dialogue. Gangsters speaking to each other in such affected, flowery sentences was so cringe worthy. Sonny and Fredo were the only ones that sounded like the characters they were presenting through the story. The sopranos had amazing dialogue by contrast, and this hamfisted homage shoe horned in so clumsily made me groan at the time, and even now. I thought the writers were better than that.
