Smart move from Tony to turn down Vito’s offer to torch one of Carmine’s trucks. Now if Paulie was boss? He’d have ok’d it knowing his Clint Eastwood perspective on the matter. Jersey street thugs fall-back to the familiar with Vito offering to counter the shut-down of millions in construction contracts by 'torching a truck'. Tony, still not far from the street, is seen contemplating Vito's ridiculous idea for a few seconds before realizing that the boss has to take the 30,000 ft approach instead.

Because it wasnt about the other families or all of that, it was about Tony, mostly.
@AguyR14013 жыл бұрын
They are amidst an epic. Making reference to feuds or business with other families, while not seeing them on-screen, gives the show a sense of scope. What made the show unique was how it delved into just one facet of a larger game of crime, namely: the personal relationships of Tony Soprano. To have cast a broader net by including the other crime families, aside from the usual NY faces, would be to add redundancy to the plot. Spanning over too many characters, generally, would be to bloat an otherwise clear storyline, and one which has compelled you with the dramas of a singular mob boss. The best literary comparison that I can give is the LotR, where Sauron, the antagonist whose desire for dominion gives reason for Frodo's quest, is never actually seen, nor does he ever meet with any of the protagonists. The mystery of him lends to a sense of urgency and scale amongst the relevant heroes, as well as the reader!

There is much truth in your observation. The show's writers forgot the primary job of the consigliere was to be the main adviser to the Don. To keep the pulse on things, the angles, the goings ons with other families. It got to the point in the second to the very last episode when Sil took 'measures' against Burt that he seemed unconvincing even at a moment when he was trying to show his loyalty.

I watched this scene numerous times but when Tony says “it’s going to cost him too” it finally dawned on me he may have been referring to the loyalty of “Johnny sack”. Later in a somewhat unrelated conversation when discussing why Johnny wants carmine hit he says “carmine has other major sources of income, Johnny don’t”. Tony would have known this when making this earlier statement and a relatively minor hit to carmines income wouldn’t effect him directly.
