i always feel like i relate to different characters depending on what stage i am in my life and the dynamics at the time. with my peers i feel more like tony as im older and calling the shots in a lowkey way, with my family i feel closer to AJ as i have all these emotions but theres a bottom line that they feel i should meet, with the world i feel like Chris because of all the different goals and distractions that lead him away from this .

I thought D-Girl was a fantastic episode. But I don't know how Pussy breaking down in the bathroom is funny, to me it's so sad that his life has come to this and he realizes the horror of what he's doing to someone who has been a lifelong friend. Alicia Witt is simply gorgeous.

Its not funny at all. It brings me to tears myself..his story and his betrayal of his best friend is tragic in every sense of that word. That paired with Chris’ decision is not good or great. It’s masterful. The score, the acting, the writing, it’s all brilliance. As a writer this show pushes me to my limits in writing. The mind of David Chase is leaps and bounds ahead of my own. I’m jealous of this scene, I wish I had written it. Being Italian and being born into a family like this, I can understand the loyalty these men have for one another. It’s unlike anything platonic or romantic..it’s loyalty woven through the brittle fragments of love for ones self. The end scene is PURE GENIUS.

What is hilarious though is how goddamned butthurt every self-righteous mobster gets when some other mobster gets busted and then turns states witness so as not to go to jail. Yet those same butthurt mobsters are the FIRST to flip and turn rat as soon as their ass and freedom are on the line.

Brother, you just kinda glossed over Livia's quote, which is so good. It deserved to be quoted in full. “Why does everything have to have a purpose? The world is a jungle, and if you want my advice, Anthony, don’t expect happiness. You won’t get it. People let you down, and I’m not naming any names, but in the end, you die in your own arms. … It’s all a big nothing. What makes you think you’re so special?”

The actort who plays AJ did a phenomenal job. The fact his name brings passionate vitriol is testament to how well he portrayed the growing pains of an entitled young man... We were all pricks in our youth at times, it's a right of passage. Some grow out of it, others end up like Jackie Jr.

Aint that the truth. The fact is a lot of the time people hate characters for exhibiting behavior that they own share - either consciously or not, and I think its in part because they are experienced enough to know better, and partly because they are hypocrites by calling the kettle black. Ive been in both shoes, and AJ is definitely someone I can relate to, for better or for worse. His ignorant naivety coupled with the self-aggrandizing ego-centrism is something Ive always found annoying to say the least, but once I started actually seeing parallels between him and myself did that annoyance became something closer to hatred towards the characteristics of a typical teenagerm because I recognized how I have acted similarly and long before realizing how at fault I have actually been.

This show first aired when I was finishing high school. 20 years later, I see a lot of Jackie jr in my younger self. Like, almost to a tee. Despite the head start I was given in life I was always gravitating toward dangerous and self destructive activities. Funny things is, in a way, me and my older brother had a very similar relationship to Chris and Tony (minus the mafia stuff). But ya, he had his shit together and I wanted to be like him but I also did a bunch of stupid shit that he would never do and I wanted to take shortcuts to achieve the success that he did. Luckily, he chose not to murder me over my appetite for narcotics and reckless behavior. Instead he juggled his own life and managed to steer me away from the dangerous road I was headed down. I did all the same dumb things as Jackie jr tho. Selling x on a small scale but having no real concept of what the consequences would be if I got caught. And further to that point, involving myself in that world when I didn't need the money and had nothing to gain from it. So fuckin stupid. Pushing away great girls and blowing up those relationships for no reason. Amazing how certain aspects of the show can really hit home...
@noone.3532

He was an amazing actor to be sure. His character kind of challenges Tony's toxic masculinity towards Christopher, Brendan, uncle junior etc. while he's sort of faced with his own son having panic attacks, trying to reconcile his own issues with that line between the values they hold, the world around them and the entire plot of spranos really. AJ is the best character because he's a mini Tony, if these guys weren't in the mob they're going to become AJ. . . That's a challenge to fans too. meanwhile AJ was one of my favourite characters for that reason. good art disturbs the comfortable and comforts the disturbed.

Fun fact not sure if you knew this. Tony Sirico the actor who plays Paulie was actually a Colombo family associate in real life. He had 28 arrests, and served 20 months in Sing Sing prison, thats where he took up acting. So in that episode where he said "I lived through the '70s by the skin of my nuts when the Colombos were goin' at it." That was actually a fun little Easter egg shedding light into his past life.

If she was ever found out she would be killed. Also Christopher constantly beats her, and once beat her for not being able to have kids. He also believed that she blew Tony just because his friends said so. When he found out the truth, not only did he not apologize to her, he put the fake story into his movie after her death. Christopher is a fucking scumbag who ruined this woman’s life by making her a manager at a mafia club. He cheats on her, and when he rats her out to tony, all he says is “I thought she loved me.” Never once did he think about what she was going through, how scared she was that in either situation her and the love of her life would be ruined. I actually found that scene at the end with Pussy crying far more heartbreaking than funny with Skip listening in on that. It’s easy to just rail against Sal for being a rat, etc but there’s actually a deleted scene that def should have been added in at some point of the FBI Director Cubitosi and Harris when they first bust Puss for dealing H. It shows how they put the screws to him and leverage his family against him and having to flip. Really gives you at least some sympathy for Puss and the circumstances he’s in. He made his choices as to why he’s in that predicament and of course you reap what you sew I get it but that deleted scene at least shows how it’s not as cut and dry when it comes to how they flip someone and again why that scene was never added to S2 I’ll never know.

First of all, thank you for doing these. I'm watching the Sopranos for the first time this summer, and I am loving it. Have started onto the third season. There's one detail in this episode that I love, every time Christopher meets with Jon, he slates Swingers, "Another problem with Swingers..." It was so funny when one of the problems was that Swingers was not Saving Private Ryan. Just shows how oblivious the guy is. Great series. I have no idea why I avoided it for so long. I think I was worried it would not live up to the hype. But, it has more than lived up to the hype.

Honestly, as stupid as Anthony Jr could get sometimes, i totally agree with your sentiment, i found his character and certain things he goes through to be very relatable to stuff i went through growing up, especially him trying to find his place in the world, being emotionally dependent over a person he’s in love with, etc.

I have always had this theory that: A) AJ is all of the cringy things people tend to do as teenagers concentrated in one person, people see way too much of themselves in him and thus hate him. B) David Chase lowkey hates millennials lol.

@@thelastjerkbender2505 lots of writers don’t know how to write kids and teenagers. John Hughes at least tried with teenagers. I don’t care for his teen movies, but they resonated with a lot of people. A lot of posters (present company included) are a lot more like AJ than they want to admit. It’s easier to criticize others (or a fictional portrayal) for faults we’re not willing to see in ourselves.

Hey once again I love what you are doing. It's like watching the sopranos all over again by giving a concise quick explanation of the eps which you do so well. Though with all due respect and correct me if I'm wrong, but when it is said that AJ goes to his grandma for advise, that isn't really what happens. He only gets that gloomy advise because as a punishment he is forced to visit his grandma and in the end it turns out to having Tony's therapy secret out of the bag.

When these gangsters DON'T rat, and they take the years in prison like a good soldier, they get treated like shit once they come out -Feech, Phil Leotardo, Richie Aprile all had to scramble just to earn a living again, begging guys who when they went away were just lower rank guys but who now outrank them, and they've gotta beg these guys to be able to earn again, etc. So fuck it, they should all rat once they're caught, rather than sacrifice themselves and their family for a Cosa Nostra that's not gonna take care of them for their efforts.

Personally, I felt like the story about the trans woman was up there with the most disturbing moments of the show, and it's so understated. Part of it for me is how Christopher refers to this person who's had her life ruined in an encounter of horrific violence in the same way that you would talk about an eccentric neighborhood dog. Dunno if this is intentional or just a coincidence, but the script Chris reads is titled Crazy Joe, the same name as the 1974 film that is Tony Sirico's earliest confirmed acting role. He was an extra in the film. EDIT: Been a while since I saw the ep so maybe this was mentioned, but there was also a Crazy Joe who was a member of the Colombo Family, who Sirico was involved with before acting.

One of the things that has always stuck with me about this episode is the hand rails on the banister of the stairs she walks down while Chris is waiting for her. I remember the very first time I saw this episode, way back when the DVD sets had come out for this season. That banister has just always stuck with me, I think it was the general unease of the entire situation and feeling as if I'm stuck in some weird purgatory every time I watch this scene. Wasn't until years later that I learned of "liminal spaces" and I finally figured out why this scene always made me feel the way it did.

I dont think there is a SINGLE thing funny about the scene with Sal in the bathroom. Not even the FBI finds it funny. The agent actually looks like he can understand the difficulty Sal has..its a sad scene. Powerful..in no way is this scene funny AT ALL. I think you missed the point of the entire episode. Livia and her conversation with Anthony for instance. Listen to her words. Then pair it with what Melfi tells Tony. Melfi says Anthony feels life is pointless and that the only sure thing is death and Tony agrees with “maybe the kid’s got a point”. Melfi asks about Tonys relationship with his mother. Livia then gives Anthony HORRIBLE advice. She confirms that life is pointless and that he isnt special. Where do you think Tony got his mindset from? Tony is the way he is because of his mother. Anthony is the way he is because of his father. Livia and Tony are both parental let downs. This whole episode is tragic. Its very sad. D girl is my favorite episode in the series. I feel strangely insulted by your sense of humor throughout thr video even though I didn’t write it. Watch it again and remake the video. Not for me, but for you. UNDERSTAND THE BRILLIANCE David Chase has in writing this episode.
