Showing us very little of Jackie, in the context of dying of cancer and memories like Christmas, is WHY his character works the way he does in the show. He's idealized in the same way a guy like Chrissy can idolize a dad that died when he was young. He's shown through a lens of nostalgia to contrast Tony, in Tony's own mind, an ideal he can't measure up to.
@patrickflanagan3762 Жыл бұрын
Extremely insightful comment. In fact had Jackie lived one wonders if Tony would have remained his friend, or if the greed and powerlust we saw in later seasons would have come out and pushed the two of them to go to war with one another.

@@patrickflanagan3762 I think a lot of the greed, powerlust and paranoia came out when Tony ascended to boss. Would’ve never happened with Jackie.
@osman732 Жыл бұрын
@@patrickflanagan3762an alternative timeline with Jackie Sr as long-reigning boss would definitely get ugly. A few years of kicking up envelopes, maybe a couple of sitdown rulings going against him, would be rich food for Tony's resentment and dissatisfaction machine. Imagine Tony as an ordinary capo, on the outside watching Richie, Ralph, Vito and Johnny Sack all getting rich off the Esplanade. With Junior and Tony B grumbling in his ear about how the Apriles eat everything and leave scraps for the Sopranos. He'd definitely be a happy camper 😂
@colorcombinations7387 Жыл бұрын
At the same time, the legendary status of the previous generation, with their supposedly lost ideals, gave a boss like Tony a cop out for all his leadership failings. Blaming any organizational shortcomings on the fact that they "don't make soldiers like they use to" - even though the challenges of yesterday are essentially the same as those of today. I'm sure Jackie's generation had the exact same dynamic. Mobsters are intensely self-interested that will always avoid taking true accountability for anything.

People keep wishing that Jackie stayed around longer in the first few seasons but his death was extremely important to the rest of the story of the show, without Jackie gone most of the decisions Tony made as boss wouldn’t have happened since Jackie wasn’t ruled by his emotions. Now, I'm not implying Tony was all that obvious; nonetheless, Tony and other bosses had a certain aura, if you will, an attitude that this guy just didn't have. I thought that was very effective. By all appearances, and by the way he talked, he came across as a fine, respectable, articulate businessman. Meeting this guy I would never think he was connected to the mob, let a alone a boss.

Also he wasn't Greedy or unreasonable like we would see Tony or junior or Jonny Sac act like. Junior trying to do a hit on Tony would NOT AT ALL HAPPENED with Jackie Sr still alive. Jackie Jr Wouldn't have pulled the dumb shit he did with that card game if his dad was still alive. It’s crazy to think how bad ass Tony was, so Jack must’ve been even better if he was made acting boss over him. And seeing him take orders from Jack is so crazy lol. Really need to rewatch this.

I'm confused, Tony used Gigi to whack Philly Parisi, who was a loyal soldier of Juniors that was spreading rumors about Tony during their power struggle, seeing here that Gigi was under Junior's crew contradicts that no?
@borko1990 Жыл бұрын
Gigi was in Junior's crew until 2000, he drove Philly Parisi from the airport because they were pals from the same crew, then he betrayed Junior and got rewarded by being named as capo of Aprile crew

This scene kinda breaks my heart for 30 reasons. Personal. Nostalgic. Serialized drama-wise(lol) and for some reason i feel like Tony was the happiest he ever was here with Jackie, puss, syl, Pauy a young innocent chrissy and the crew in a positive direction overall . And it was tainted knowing sal big pussy was working w the feds
