Tony beat "Muscles Marinara" because he fainted at the wedding and needed help, and everyone was staring at him. He felt helpless and weak, and as a boss, he cannot be perceived that way. Then when Johnny Sac cried, he saw how everyone was questioning John's manhood, including Christopher, who agreed with Phil, They don't like people showing weakness by crying like a woman. So Tony felt that he had to assert dominance as the alpha dog by beating up the strongest looking guy there. It's pretty basic!

I always found it interesting how Meadow's attitude changes toward the mob, her and AJ's likability flip over the show. It's one of those aspects of the show that makes you feel slimy because you don't want Meadow to be corrupted, but you appreciate her holding it down for her family.

Johnny Sac probably the coldest heart on the entire series. Ordered a hit on Ralph Ciffaretto over a joke, ordered a hit on Carmine, threatened Tony Soprano with a war between the families, and here he orders a hit on Rustie even though he's in jail. Tony, not being quite as cold as John, was done with that part of the business after he got shot, had a near death experience while in coma and changed his perspective on life. That's why he doesn't want to whack Vito either. Normally you'd have to advise Tony to change his line of work 😂

Quick fact: a real life mob boss, from NJ, ended up being killed when his girlfriend snitched him out to his crew for being bisexual. That’s what this storyline is loosely based upon. And it happened in New Jersey. The Calvacante crew. Tony : “ We both know he’s not the first”.

Tony picked on the biggest, strongest youngest guy to show that he still has the physical strength. It’s just exactly what he talked about with Dr. Melfi and if you remember a few episodes back Feech Lamanna come out of prison and told the story about how he picked the first biggest meanest guy and beat him up when he first got in there so people would leave him alone. It would show that he was crazy and respected.

Tony doesnt want VITO gone because 1` he works hard and 2 he really doesnt care. He's sort of the new generation. But the older guys like Phil, Johnny, Carlo, Pauli they can't deal with it. One thing thats interesting in interviews with former mobsters. they all say that in their family, theres only a handful of guys who really earn and another handful of guys who are killers and enforcers. The rest of the guys are kind of just there.
