I think it was a fantastic ending. Because all these years later, people are STILL talking about it and debating what the ending means. Many people believe that everything suddenly going black represents Tony being shot in the head and killed. But, either way, the fact that people still debate it's ending is way better than any definitive ending

The camera switches to Tony’s POV when he looks over at the bells - Gene kills Teddy Spirodakis (TS) at gun point in his Members Only Jacket.. Tony gets shot by members only jacket 2.0 at gunpoint - Tony is awake in bed in the Sopranos pilot.. Tony is sleeping to funeral music in the finale - Silvio didnt even HEAR it until “it happened” when he was eating in the restaurant with that NY guy that got shot up. Guy gets shot, blood splattered.. THEN gun shots. It makes sense that Meadow is the last thing/person that Tony sees before he dies. In many ways, she was his guardian angel. The one person who never feared him. The black screen is Tony’s POV. He’s dead. Tony was set up by NY and Paulie/Patsy. You can see the look on their faces (Paulie guilt, Patsy’s hatred for Tony that dates back to Season 2). Tony had Phil killed in front of Phil’s family, so they did the same thing back to Tony - shot in front of his family

i think the ending is great but disagree that it's clear what happens. the point of view theory ultimately doesn't work: the camera shots are not exact from tony's point of view, they are too close to the door to be. therefore, a pattern that would lead to blackness being tony's exact point of view is not established. i think the point is more that it doesn't matter what happens, the ending is more abstract - life will go on for whomever is left, as the series stops with tony's face and the words "don't stop"

Most brilliant ending ever. The whole show is basically from Tony's perspective more or less, and when he's dead, boom, the show goes black. Lots of clues throughout this season as to what the ending means, as you have researched in the outro. The deepest clue (that may be over-reading things) is "3 o'clock", the message Christopher gave to Tony when Christopher was shot in the 2nd season and went to "limbo". "3 o'clock" from a direction standpoint would be directly to Tony's right, which is where the guy with the members-only jacket would have emerged from the bathroom to shoot him.

Great reaction! Loved following the show with you guys. Some observations about the ending: The guy in the jacket goes into the bathroom, just like the murder scene in The Godfather. He's wearing a Members Only jacket, the title of the first episode of the season, the jacket Eugene wore before he killed himself. It was also worn by the hitmen who shot up Silvio in the parking lot. Meadow can be regarded as Tony's guardian angel - her presence by his side helped save him when he nearly died after Junior shot him. In the montage at the beginning of the season, the voiceover describes the "Guardian Angel" while focusing on her. She's the only one absent from the final dinner scene, which means she can't be there to save Tony. Her absence leaves an open spot to Tony's right - meaning he would be shot from a 3-o-clock position. Remember how "3-o-clock" was a message Christopher delivered to Tony after his near death experience? Bobby's words from the boat trip are repeated in a flashback at the end of episode 20 to drive home their signifance. "You probably don't even hear it when it happens". The episode ends in an abrupt cut to black, total silence. David Chase has refused to confirm the ending, but he has remarked that it's all there if you look at the clues. I think it's clear, Tony dies the moment the show ends.

What I love about the final Tony/Junior scene is that out of everything Tony mentions, Junior only remembers the fact that they played catch together. None of the power, crime, money, or glory, the only thing that mattered in the end were the few fleeting moments of actual loving familial connection. Perfectly reflecting the speech Tony gives over dinner in the finale of the first season and then is reminded of by AJ in this episode.

Tony’s Dead! No Question -Every time the bell rings on the restaurant door; it’s the same, exact pattern. -Tony pops his head up quickly to see who it is. Then we see through Tony’s eyes who is who coming through the door. That is the (POV) point of view camera shot. -This pattern happens every time. -But when Meadow walks through the door, we only see black through Tony’s eyes. That is because Tony was shot and was dead before he could lay eyes on his daughter. -Remember the flashback with Bobby at the lake talking about death with Tony: “You probably don’t even hear it when it happens” (This was taken from Goodfellas) -Black screen and no music during the credits to mourn Tony. “ don’t stop believing” when this episode came out the majority of people had the same reaction as you all did including me. For years the writer David Chase refused to discuss the meaning of the ending and why it is the way it is. But finally not to long ago after being asked about in an interview for the millionth time he relented and spilled the beans. He basically said yeah Tony got his head blown off at the end. Presumably by the guy wearing the members only jacket, which was the same jacket that the guy who hung himself because he couldn’t get out of the life and move to Florida wore. There is some for shadowing like when Sil didn’t hear the shots at the restaurant when a the guy next to him got whacked. And when tony and Bobby were out on the boat and they say I bet you don’t even hear the shot when you get it. Hence it cuts to black and Tony didn’t hear the shots. Also at the beginning of this episode Tony is laying on his back asleep kind of like he would look in an open coffin. But yeah Tony got whacked in front of his whole family. The end. It’s the best show. I still watch it all the way through a couple of times a year or so. You all are the best loved your reactions on these.

If you go back to the scene with Bobby and Tony in the boat from the episode this season at the lake, Bobby makes a comment about "I bet you don't even hear it when it happens" or something close to that, it's been theorized this is sort of a representation of Tony's death at the end.

Speaking to what you mentioned about the storylines not wrapping up; to me, that's the whole point. The show constantly takes storylines that would be overly dramatized in other media and drags it down to the mundane, human level. Stories don't neatly wrap up in real life. They continue indefinitely. If you die young, all the stories around you will be unfinished. Hell, even if you die old. The Sopranos is about the most down-to-earth, human crime drama that you'll find. Loved these reactions!

All the people focused on in the restaurant were allusions to people present in past "hits" or attempted hits: The boy scouts at Bobby's death scene, the guy wearing the Member's Only Jacket like Eugene, the two black dudes looking like the two guys that shot at Tony in season 1. This explains the tension throughout that scene.

"Bye-bye, wave bye-bye, Grandpa. Bye-bye, Pop-Pop." Have enjoyed your reaction to one of my all time favourite shows thanks. If interested my theory on the ending- Tony Soprano was shot in the head just as Meadow was entering the diner. In the end scene you are seeing things through Tony's perspective (also switching between Third Person Point Of View) and the reason for the long black ending before credits is symbolising Tony being shot and dying as we are no longer able to see things from his perspective anymore. Just as Bobby Bacala predicts (S6EP13) "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?". I believe it was the guy in the members only jacket looking suspicious at the counter (just like Eugene Pontecorvo is wearing when he kills Teddy eating dinner at a fast-food restaurant S6E1) the guy goes to the toilet, like Michael was told to in the "Godfather" (also Tony's favourite scene from the movie mentioned by AJ S6E8) but he does come out firing and kills Tony from the 3 o'clock angle like Chrissy predicted from a dream after being shot. I believe it was Butch DeConcini ("can you see anyone?") behind the hit after Tony stomps his friend Coco Cogliano and threatened Butch. He was never gonna forgive Tony for that. Also he told Phil to whack Tony before the war even started and never liked the Jersey crew "was happy to do business with whoever is left". I think Butch wanted Phil out after Phil not so subtly threatened Butch and wouldn't let him know his whereabouts. He had Tony kill Phil which he knew would not fly a Jersey guy taking out a New York BOSS. I think he let Paulie know (he had history with NY and said he got through the last war) because he wasn't one of the 3 to be wacked. Paulie even though not the smartest gangster knew on the boat with Tony if he had of answered differently about the Ginny Sack joke "it was an off colour remark" he would of ended up with Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero in the ocean. Also Paulie and Patsy discussion at the Bada Bing in toilet has me thinking did Paulie know something was happening and let Patsy in on it. We know Patsy tried to kill Tony for revenge of his twin brother, something he would of never forgotten so would have no problem with Tony being replaced. Also the final time Paulie see's Tony the cat walks up and sits next to him(maybe a symbol). My best guess is Butch had a meeting with Paulie at his hair dressing salon where he had previous meetings with his captains. He told Paulie what's going to happen(they had already asked Silvo and got a no by Sil killing Burt Gervasi) and he'll be taking over. Because next you see Paulie come into Satriale's store office dressed up like a boss handing out scissors(maybe gift from Butch's salon) to everyone and we all know how easily he can flip just like earlier in the show when Johnny Sack had his ear. Also I believe AJ's girlfriend Rhiannon Flammer gave up where they were going for dinner. She appears to make a note of it when Carmela tells Anthony jr. where they are going. The reason I think she is involved is one she has her photo on Butch's wall at the hair salon (told AJ she modelled) and two what she says earlier in the series when she was hooking up with AJ's friend while clubbing in New York and her friend asking about the "family business" with his Uncle. She seems to get a lot of air time as a minor character in the last episode as well. I have plenty more to my theory but would be here all day typing. But hopefully you can understand how I think it ended and got to my conclusion. OR Am I thinking too much about the ending and it was as simple as us the audience getting wacked and like the song says "It goes on and on and on and on".

We'll obviously never know for sure if Tony died or not - although David Chase, the show creator, once referred to it as Tony's "death scene" in an interview. That said, I think the arrangement of shots in the final scene shows pretty definitively that he did. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter if he died or not - the remainder of his life will be spent just like that final scene. Constant tension. Always looking over his shoulder. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop. The entire audience was endlessly tensed up during this scene and that's how Tony would spend the rest of his life. The hustle never ends.

When i watched this show, i knew without spoiling, that ppl didn't like the ending. So when i saw the credits after 10 secs of nothing, i chuckled and understood. But i like stories that are ambiguous. So it took some time for me to appreciate and like this ending. It's as you said: Its a type of decision you expect from the sopranos. And its not the first time your left to interpret stuff. Like what happened to the russian guy in szn 3, Tony's "I GET IT" line to the countless Dream sequences. That close up of Tony when he looks in the restaurant, and then cuts abruptly to him already sitting down. I like this idea where he's looking at himself get killed over and over again. It's the same thing Christopher told Paulie when in the hospital after getting shot in szn 2. How Chris crossed over to hell and saw his father, and the ppl or person kills his father the same way over and over again and its painful. I love you two. It has been such a thrill watching you experience this show. I had a similar reaction to the ending, but 16 years later I still think about it all the time!

After watching this amazing series I just forget that James Gandolfini is no longer with us what a great talent that left us far to soon ❤❤ but yeah that ending WTF 😂

Omg that’s so perfect that you said it felt like a cheesy ending to a sitcom. I love how this show bended the traditional format of TV/soap operas, choose the most basic song ever and a simple cut to black. Beautiful

Also there are some amazing videos out there that break down the whole scene and how the bell and the looks up play into what's happening. But you weren't alone, when this aired everyone was calling their cable provider thinking they missed the last minute of the show lol

Ironically, Meadow's bad driving kept her from being on time and sitting between Tony and Member's only and getting her head blown off.

I'm genuinely sad that we've finished watching this together. Although I've watched it countless times without you guys previously, seeing you both experience it has been an absolute joy and pretty much the regular highlight of my week. Thank you

Very first shot of the episode, Tony looking like he's laying in a casket with organ music playing. Very funeral-esque lol

I have been waiting for your reaction to this finale. Series creator David Chase has said that, so far as he is concerned, Tony got popped here but he wanted to leave the ending open-ended. You can imagine the audience reaction when the series was originally shown! It was off the Richtrer Scale! I had a flashback to the scene in The Godfather with Michael going to the rest room in the restaurant.

Your comparison of not ending a video game was really on point. The sopranos ending is very much the same as not finishing a game because you know the character you’ve been playing as will die or at least have no more progression to make. And it’s the first time I’ve heard someone make that observation and it really rings true. It’s amazing that this many years removed from the finale and after all the analysis there’s still new insights on the show to be made. That is the sign of true art. Kudos for coming up with that!

The most famous fade to black in TV history! Great series reaction! Completely open to interpretation. Imagine spending six years watching to get to this point…

There's actually a lot of breakdowns onto why it's not really open to interpretation. There's a lot of foreshadowing and a lot of signs pointing to that this is just the story of his life all the way up to the moment he is killed.

If you do The Wire and I hope you will, just be aware that the lingo the characters use is very hard to pick up initially and that’s intentional, the first episode or two will have you learning the vocab as you go. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but it’s done really well. It’s a bit like the slang in the book A Clockwork Orange where you learn the language as you go. Can’t wait! Wishing you well with your new arrival!
