You can also make the inference that Tony returned it by the way he looks and glosses at the painting. Coming to the realization that Paulie is right
@sleepy_jeanАй бұрын
@@georgeyacoub2075 What? The look was unrelated to the painting, it was related to his current situation. This is immediately before he personally kills his cousin. His eyes locking on the sword is the most significant part. Another big thing is the situation in which Paulie rescued the painting. You see Paulie sitting there looking afraid of the painting of Tony before getting it touched up. That's because this was immediately after Tony killed Ralphie, a captain, over nothing. I think the painting was a symbol of how other captains started to fear Tony after realizing no one was safe.

There is meaning behind this. Tony was angry when he first saw it because he though he was being mocked. When he threw it in the garbage it was outside and he saw the true colors of the painting showing that it was painted out of honor and respect. yeah it was kind of a poignant moment for Tony because he realizes his men see him as a general of sorts and that he was letting them down by putting his own feelings for his cousin above the safety of his men. The very next scene he kills Tony B.

Paullie says to Tony that the painting "captures more of what you really are about". That's exactly why Tony doesn't like the painting.

The lack of a weather strip at the bottom of the exterior entrance door to Paulie's place tips us off that this is a movie set.

This whole lit story thread is just so creative and atypical of most other television shows and films. We see the painting before and what should be some quick throwaway thing ends up playing out a little more slowly because Paulie decides to keep it. Not only that, he has Tony painted onto it and then it all comes to this weirdly sincere scene where Tony sees the painting and it gets him thinking about himself and everything. It also adds dimension to both Tony and Paulie as they see the painting in their own ways and react to it in their own ways. Although, that's nothing new, The Sopranos is a show with fully dimensional characters.

When Paulie says... "It's not a real general from history.. it's you" it makes this whole series feel like one of those bizarre dream sequences Chase is so epic at creating ....It reminded me of when Junior thought he saw himself on the Curb Your Enthusiasm TV Show

If you read the research papers Dr. Melfi reads, after Elliot outs her treating Tony to their friends, it says that violent sociopaths tend to care about little children and animals as a means of proving to themselves that they're a good person. Killing Ralphie to revenge Pie-o-my is Tony's fucked up brain convincing himself that he is a moral and empathic person, thus allowing him to compartmentalise his criminality. It's why he wants the best for AJ and Jackie Jr and goes apeshit when they fuck up. It's why he's so sentimental about Italy and his ancestors the stonemasons. If i had to guess i'd say he didn't love Pie, he just loved the status of owning a racehorse and conflated that in his head with love.
@farmalmta3 жыл бұрын
@@johndcoffee632 Tony explains to Hesh why horses have it made, because they have a life opposite of what Tony has. Owning Pie-O-My was a way of trying to own the freedom and happiness that horses represent to Tony. When Ralph had Pie-O-My torched, he symbolically killed Tony's dream of being free of all his misery. Thus Tony's desperate murderous rage.
