It's the 25th anniversary of The Sopranos, and in today's video I wanted to discuss the Sopranos solider Walden, a minor character who might actually be more important than we first realized.
Walden is the man who whacked Phil Leotardo, and from what we've seen he could be a competent underling for Tony Soprano.

I'm appalled you blame Chris for Cosette's death, when it was clearly suicide by asphyxiation. Reliable witnesses attest hearing her declare "[she didn't] want to live no more" before crawling under him for a warm place to die. That's some sad ****, not murder.

Walden is someone that most audience members can really admire. He's good looking, well-spoken, tough, and we don't see him harass civilians or treat women badly. The actor must have had the day of his life when he finds out his character gets to take out the Shah.

And sadly, we don't see him anymore in films and tv-shows, probably it's gonna stay that way because he was already 41 in 2008, when the last season aired, meaning he's now close to 60 years. Almost an old man, crazy when you think that Max Casella(Benny) is the same age as him and he looked like a kid, what is understandable considering that he didn't reach puberty until 27 years old, there is some rare syndrome for that condition@@griz312

Walden’s name is a callback to Thoreaus reflective work Walden, emphasizing transcendentalisms hallmark values of self reliance and individuality. Remember he’s physically fit, doesn’t do drugs, is mentally collected, and succeeds when entrusted with enormous individual responsibility at the end completing the hit on Phil. He’s the philosophical anti Chris.

I like how every time someone dies, their spot gets immediately filled. Showing that this is a business that needs to keep running. Also have y'all noticed how Tony's reign must have been the worst 7 years the organization had? All of the upper management from season 1 got taken out during that short amount of time. And most of their replacements did as well. That's why people kept rising trough the ranks so fast. And to your point about how the new generations dont care about the old timers... Let's not forget that in season 1 the actual boss of the family is in jail and only gets mentioned once, then he probably died soon after and no one mentions him ever again. Most likely they didnt care about him at that point. He was probably just an expense in their books. They probably threw some money at his family and his commissary and that's it

It’s probably why I was never surprised or confused by his sudden appearance as a character and significant feature towards the end of the show. In fact, id say he'd be a new Sil with the way the camera is aimed upward showing his fsce as hes finishing off Phil mirrors the scene of Sil doing Ade. Walden whacking Phil would have been a huge step in the direction of being made, if he was not already. but Chris was only given the trajectory cause of Tony's relationship with Dickie, and how Dickie schooled Tony he would do the same for Chris. Chris never had a hit of that caliber. so in most ways, he was already above anything Chris could do or handle.
@BiggityBoggity8095
@BiggityBoggity8095 6 ай бұрын
You underestimate Chris as a soldier. Chris was either pulling the trigger himself, orchestrating, or at the very least present for every DiMeo hit throughout the series. He’s got more bodies on him than a Chinese cemetery. It was drug addiction and strained relations with his supervisors that caused his performances to falter. It’s also notable that he spent his prime years as an all-star hitter applying for management positions. This was his weak point, he was a bad manager due to entitlement and lack of accountability. But to judge his abilities as a house painter based on his time as a manager is bogus. Considering his tribulations, and the time he spent in politics, he performed adequately in his time. Chris absolutely would’ve been capable of hitting Phil. His experience as a tailor was vast, he knew how to gather information and create a comfortable environment for his victim. Walden was spoon fed the intel. Butch, Patsy, and Paulie handed him Phil on a platter, because Tony had a connect in the FBI. Chris would’ve been able to find him on his own. Saying that Walden is better at painting houses than Chris simply because he did Phil is… overzealous. Chris was the second best soldier Tony ever had, first place goes to Furio. But that’s not even fair because they were used in different positions. It’s like saying a great back fielder is better at soccer (football for non-Americans) than a great offensive lineman is at football. Furio being the back fielder and Chris being the offensive lineman. They were both muscle, but their specialties within that field were different. TLDR, give Chris a fair shake damnit.

@@Dead_Again1313 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Tony should’ve sided with his cousin and went to war with the Lupertazzis. They were trying to take control of the DiMeo family since at least season 3. There’s a reason why John was making turncoats out of Tony’s most senior (Paulie) and most talented (Ralph) employees. A coup was probably in the making since Carmine’s era. There’s also a reason why the Lupertazzis would’ve preferred a carefully constructed coup to an all out war, they respected the DiMeo family’s ability to hit back just as hard. Why did Carmine capitulate to Tony on the esplanade? He knew Tony could set things in motion, and he wasn’t wrong, because it almost happened. Tony could’ve won an all out war with NY if he struck first. John and Phil were comfortable in their sense of superiority. Hit them first, Butchie will catch some hot ones later from Carmine Jr’s crew. It could’ve been done
@Dead_Again1313
@Dead_Again1313 6 ай бұрын
@@BiggityBoggity8095 I agree. Anthony B would have done well to have taken Phil out along with his brother and Tony had to choose peace or violence. Both coming with their own risks. It would have been great if the three cousins stuck together but I think Tony saw NY as superior and might have been too intimidated by the idea of a war with them. They were a pain and a threat to Tony's guys from early on, and Anthony B sparked things off but Tony S kind of folded. Chris could have at least gone down fighting in the war to secure power if Tony wanted him gone. I've said the same thing as you. This should have kicked off a real offensive between the two and the DeMeo family should have thrown everything they had at NY instead of screwing around trying to talk their way out of it.

Walden Robert Casotto, a.k.a. Bobby Darrin. The connection with Christopher, is he sang 'If I Were A Carpenter', when he drives up to the Esplanade construction site. Henry David Thoreau is "The Happy Wanderer". He spent 2 years in Walden Pond, Massachusetts, living in isolation. He wrote about spending time in the woods, enjoying his connection with nature.

I agree, I think that this was a way for the show to show the audience that no matter who ends up getting got, they’ll always be young men who rise to replace them and who might end up being smarter and better at it

I’ve stated on other forums over the years that Walden may have taken over as capo when Larry Baresi went away given he makes an appearance shortly after. Baresi did have the biggest crew as they once said but aside from Albert we never seen any of them, they mentioned a few times that Albert wasn’t to sharp either. This would make perfect sense given only the top guys came to visit Tony right after the accident with Chris. Also, if you notice Paulie seemed to show him respect in their ball breaking and kept his mouth shut when Walden mentioned little Paulie. It is never mentioned that he was in Carlo’s crew, I believe he was asking for him since he was the last of the top guys to show.
@cuginoeddie8677
@cuginoeddie8677 6 ай бұрын
I should also note that the actor who played him was 40 years old at the time, but unlike Chris and Benny he didn’t play the part in his nature or by his dress as a younger guy like those 2 did. He carried himself differently like an older man unlike the likes of Chris, Benny, Matt, Sean and Brendan who who all had the characteristics of growing up in hip hop culture.

@@alexmuenster2102 it didn’t look like Walden was standing up for Carlo at all, it’s was more of a suspicion or concerned type. Aside from that, he came out of nowhere and to Tony’s house which nobody outside his inter circle did throughout the series. Once Tony became boss the only members of his family that did show up that weren’t high up were his drivers, Furio, Benny and Perry. No other soldiers were ever at his house aside from Chris for the obvious reason and Ralph because he was dating Roe

After the final season, I definitely think Walden would have quickly risen in the ranks. The DiMeo family still had plenty of members and could have continued doing business. I think Patsy would have become boss, yet arguments can be made for Paulie or Albert Barese who were I believe the only remaining captains. You would expect a current captain or underboss to become the boss in a vacancy. Remaining crews would have been: 1- Anthony Maffei presumably became capo of Junior's old crew after Bobby was killed (probably a smaller operation by this point). 2- Paulie Gualtieri was capo of Tony's old crew, which was merged with the Aprile/Gervasi crew. Carlo had become capo of the Aprile crew after Vito's death, in addition apparently to his own crew (former Altieri crew) and Paulie agreed to take over the old Aprile crew after Carlo's death. Chris Moltisanti's crew was also merged under Paulie after his death. 3- Albert Barese was capo over Larry Berese's crew while being arrested for violating his house arrest You'd have to imagine that Paulie's crew would have been broken up into at least two crews at some point in the near future once the "chinese dumpster fire" was gotten under control. It was literally the remains of the old Soprano crew, the remains of the Aprile crew, and the remains of the Altieri crew all put together. Plus Christophers crew. Too big and would probably be split up once capable leadership was identified. I think Patsy would skipper one and maybe eventually Benny or Walden the other. Made men and associates remaining (that we know of, including little known characters with minor roles) would include Patsy Parisi, Paulie Gualtieri, Larry and Albert Barese and their entire crews most of whom we were never introduced too, Benny Fazio, Walden Belfiore, "Murmur" Zancone, Little Paulie Germani, Anthony Maffei, Peter "Bissell" LaRosa, Terry Doria, Dante Greco, Perry Annunziata, Jason Molinaro, Cary DiBartolo, Bobby Zanone, Donny K, Kevin "Dogs" Interdonato, Vincent Pisaturo, Frankie Cortese, Corky DiGoia, Alfie Goduti, Joe DaRuffa, Big Frank Cippolina, Joey Sammarco, Max Pellegrino, Dave Salerno, Nicholas Spagnelli, Corky Caporale, Hesh Rabkin, John Stefano, the three unnamed associates of Benny at the card game when Little Paulie got thrown out the window, the unnamed Aprile crew guys hanging out at their social club with Ritchie, and numerous characters who hadn't been mentioned since season 1, like the three soldiers that helped Mikey break up Sammy Grigio's card game and the soldier who helped him throw Rusty Irish off the bridge. Also, the unnamed mobsters hanging out with Junior at the Sit Tite luncheonette, and the bodyguard who accompanied Junior when leaving Vesuvio's crossing the street. These guys wouldn't have just vaporized. There was still a vast criminal enterprise in operation. It was just that the leading characters who we were most exposed to were largely gone. Other people would have stepped up to fill the ranks, as always happens. The question remains, who would have been boss? Paulie would have returned to being underboss and controlled the largest dollar rackets in the family, and so he could become boss and make Patsy his underboss and take over as skipper of those combined crews. That is what I think would probably happen. I don't think Paulie would be successful. I think Patsy would eventually end up as boss. But I think the show was made to reflect the downfall of the real NJ DiMeo family, the DeCav's, who used to be a freestanding family but now fly under the Gambino's. And so it could be that the DiMeo's have no boss, and instead answer to NY. It's been said that in real life, the NY families consider the DeCav's their "farm team." They would often outsource hits to them, just like in Sopranos, the NY family (Lupertazzi's) would often try to do the same to the DiMeo's. There's also the scenes where NY denigrates NJ as "farmers" (which I believe comes from actual FBI recordings of real NY mobsters discussing NJ), and when Carmine characterizes the DiMeo's as a "glorified crew" since the NJ family is smaller and less powerful. In real life, the DeCav's throughout this period and up until today had about 30-60 made members and an estimated 50-100 associates. Each of the five NY families have about 150-250 made members and up to 500 associates. One difference between the show and reality is that in real life, several of the NY families have crews operating in NJ, where in the show it was insinuated that any involvement NY (treated as a block) had in NJ was through their dealings with the DiMeo's. What I don't understand is the seeming contradiction in different lines of the show. In early seasons, Sil refers to NY opening the books to new made guys but laying down the probationary period stipulation. This would seem to infer that NY had control over the DiMeos from the beginning, since they controlled who got made in the DiMeo family. If the DiMeo's were independent, they would control who they make themselves. Yet, later in the show the opposite was implied. Phil (NY) complained that the DiMeo's make anyone and everyone, which infers that the DiMeo's control who they make (not NY). Was this just a mistake in the show's writing? Sometimes at the beginning things are introduced that contradict later themes and premises, which is typical for any show. But I never understood it if it was deliberate.

Good post. I don’t think the NJ guys had freedom to give out buttons - candidates still had to be screened by the other families (check for debts, beefs etc) There was probably a perception in NY that the quality of the candidates were not as good as NY (earnings, association and size of criminal enterprises etc)

6:05 Christopher was successful in the family for a while though, no matter how much the boss back him up, if he wasn't useful and if he wasn't a good earner he wouldn't join the family that young age. Remember Junior asks Tony in the 1st season, if Chris is a good earner or not, Tony says he is then Junior wants him to work in his crew as punishment but Tony refuses that, at that point Chris didn't join the family but he was still important for Tony so he couldn't give him to Junior.
